Thanks for being here.
Why don't you fill our audience in a little bit on your mission and your work before we get to today's show topic... My mission in my work. Okay, well, first off, I am a doctor Oral Medicine, and I do get to practice one day a week, so I work at a free clinic called men, and I'm able to practice my acupuncture and distribute herbs to under-privileged people, so that's very cool. For me, mission, David and I always felt that we needed to develop very results-driven products that were affordable for people, when we entered the natural foods industry, back when dinosaurs run the earth, natural skin care was very expensive and very ineffective, it was basically just people claiming natural ingredients, so we really did want to create products that actually delivered on the promise of whatever it was, we were promising... I love it.
Thank you.
Today, we are talking about antioxidants and anti-aging for the skin, and so you have my complete attention.
So Dr. miles. Why are natural ingredients so important for our skin... Well, natural ingredients are super, super important for both our skin and our bodies because they're very complex, and our bodies are complex, so we react better to that complexity than to what would be synthetic or basically one level type of ingredient, so your body responds to those better also, they're better for you. Again, they don't have chemicals and other synthetics that are harmful to you, but let's back up one step. And let's talk a little bit about why skin care is important, period.
So we often forget that the skin is the largest organ system in the entire body, and that it actually has real functions, so it's responsible for thermo regulation, it's responsible for toxin, waste removal, and also to prevent pathogens from entering the body, it can only do those functions when it truly is healthy, and of course, we have the added benefits of wanting to look younger, healthier and more beautiful... Right, or as healthy and young-looking as possible, so by maintaining your skin health, you're able to accomplish all that.
Now, dermis cribs majorly to the free radical theory of aging. And so we're getting into the antioxidant things through the back door, but... So free radicals are responsible for the aging process, whether that be on the skin or internally in our body, so on the skin, of course, it looks like brown spots, wrinkles, that kind of thing, but in our bodies, it's a breakdown in organ systems, etcetera.
So the solution to free radicals is anti-oxidants, and let's back up one more step, you do your... Real quick that I kinda jump around.
So where do Paradis come from? Well, on the skin, the major source of free radical damage is the sun, and that's why everybody says, Oh, make sure you were hot and SPSS and stuff like that, but what people don't realize is we actually create free radicals in our body, and stress is the number one way we create free radicals because the stress hormones, catecholamines, and I can't remember the other one at the moment, break down into free radicals, so all of us that are type A personalities are actually killing ourselves with free radicals via stress. So you really wanna control the stress... Another way we create free radicals is through exercise.
Now again, being a holistic practitioner, I don't want you to stop exercising because in this country, we need to exercise more or not less, but we should be cognizant of the fact that we're actually creating fracas when we exercise.
So free radicals, and of course, you've got the pollution aspects of where free decals come from, and again, going back to the Sunshine element, again, being a holistic practitioner, I want you to have at least one hour of sunshine a day because it's extremely important for releasing different brain chemicals and for your body in general, but then again, I want you to do it smartly and do it like between eight and 10 or something like that, where you're not getting the very strong raise... Right.
Yeah, that direct sunshine. I'm gonna back up now too, and go back to what you were saying about stress, and I feel like... Gosh, we're raising... I have two kids that are now on their later teams, but in today's society, it feels like we're equipping our kids with a brief case, you're wanting them have the top grades, we want them to be... We want them to be the top of their question... Yeah, right.
So she said type 8 personalities, but these type IAA personalities, we want them to be, I think, a... Well, just to our busy western life is stressful, just that. And so, again, being in the natural food industry, products industry, we are aware of yoga and meditation and all the good things that we can do to actually help prevent the effects of the stress. So again, it's a balance, it's all about... Life's about balance, and so it's really important that in addition to encouraging our kids to be top of their class and all of that, then we also need to encourage them to enjoy life and to sit back and maybe do sports that they enjoy, but that maybe they're not totally the best at... Or something like that.
So it's all about balance. Yeah, that's a good point. And maybe that's the other side, that they don't hear enough what ingredients are particularly potent for anti-aging benefits.
Okay, so again, backing up into the antioxidants, you have a group that are called super anti-oxidants, and within that group, you'll find things like Pinon, which is a pine bark extract from the south of France. It is 50 times more powerful than vitamin E and has huge anti-inflammatory benefits in that it stabilizes the capillary system in the skin to prevent it from leaking fluid and also encourages it to pick up fluid. This is huge for people who suffer with Rosacea or that have under hypothesis due to water retention.
Can you say what that is again?
With none, it's P-Y-C-O-G-E-N-O-L, very funny. ingredient with great benefits, another one that again is a tongue-twister, is asked to Santa, which is an anti-oxidant that's derived from the marine plant algae, we farm it from off the Coast of Hawaii, but it's actually the antioxidant that gives salmon their orange flamingos, their orange color, because they actually eat it and as Anton is very orange, if you've ever looked at a mage defying product, it looks like pumpkin, because it's got a good percentage of us as antonius coil... No, this is good. And so this is a part of the superintendent that you've created... Okay, So coin and then I didn't create them. So they are patented ingredient that I do purchase from the supplier who is harvesting them, and dermis like to use patented ingredients, we like our Stacy 50, which is in our new Vitamin C line is a patented form of vitamin C. The reason I like patent and ingredients 'cause I have been the for this line for longer than I wanna say, but I like them because I already know what the percentage needs to be in the products to get the results that I wanna see. And that's really the reason that Dorman has been around since 1984, is because David and I have never been the best marketers, but we've made really good products, and so they've always been formulated for results.
That's great.
Can you talk a little bit about... You said for rosacea, for the under eye puffins, going back to the anti-aging piece now.
Okay, so for anti-aging, really what you wanna focus on is your college in health... Oh yeah, because college in elastin is the foundation to the skin, and we live here in Southern California, so this is a pretty good analogy. But if you have a house that the foundation is really good, when you have an earthquake, it may rock and roll, but after the earthquake, the house is still standing, well, it's the same thing with our skin, if our college and a last... And health is good when we smile or grammars or do all those weird facial contortions than when we get done, we don't end up with the wrinkles, a lot of people have those, we call them in Chinese medicine, liver lines, but those lines between your eyebrows... Again, a stress-related lines, again, you could keep those at a minimum if your college in Latin health is good.
So what are the ingredients that are good for college and last... Now, you have peptides, like The Trixie truce is a peptide that... And should I explain peptide?
Sure, okay, so peptides are chains of amino acids and they're absorbed into the skin, but they actually act as messengers for different enzymatic pathways in the skin, so metrical specifically enhances collagen Health and helps regrow collagen. It totally supports collagen in the skin, vitamin C is another really good ingredient for college in health, in fact, if you sprain your ankle or break a bone or anything like that, your doctor should be telling you to up your intake of vitamin C anyway, because Vitamin C is absolutely essential for any sort of connective tissue regrowth repair, and that includes bones includes tendons in the skin, it includes the Atlassian collagen fibers, so Vitamin C is an excellent vitamin for college in health.
Right, that's great. And this is an excellent advice, Dr, what trends do you see in the anti-aging products category right now, what are those trends?
Really, as far as a trend goes, I see that people really do want products, they have results and that have clinicals behind them, or have some sort of substantiation, so whether it be focus groups or whether there be some sort of research to show that the product really does what it says, we're past the days of, Oh, ant, Hello told me this was a great product. Give it a try.
People wanna know that it's true now, social media, and that community is still pretty active on, Hey, so and so said this was a great product, try... The trends I see are that people wanna see more substantiation to the claims that are being made. A good point. This is great, interesting information, and right now we need to take a quick break more in just a moment with Dr. Linda Miles, don't go away, we'll be right back.

And now, back to our interview with Vice President of Germany, Dr. Linda miles and we're talking about anti-oxidants and anti-aging for the skin, and this is so interesting. Dr. Miles talked a little bit about, who uses these products? Are they men, are they women? Of course, women that are younger individuals becoming more interested in them... Absolutely, although younger individuals are not so keen, like with a firming product or something like that, men also are becoming more cognizant of the fact that they need to protect their skin and help repair what damage they've done, but they also like to use non-fragrance products, so that's probably the trend with men, is that they prefer non-fragrance products as opposed to something that would be fragrance, but pretty much all age groups, the Millennials are still more concerned with the experience of skin care, so they may like something fun and something that has a lot of natural fragrance to it, but truly from 35 on, you have very serious skin care users, what about speaking of millennials or teenagers, just talking about Anaesthesia in care because of what about breakouts and everything... Do you have anything like that?
Well, for breakouts, you can actually get a... I'll mention... My line is that there's a very clear products and there's a... The most important thing is the cleanser, and then there's a... And then there's a moisturizer that goes with it too, but that contains all kinds of natural ingredients that they've been shown to work on blemish prone skin, such as you've got teater in there, you've got... I can't think of the other two relate, I think there's some lavender in there anyway, there's about seven different ingredients in that range of products that are specific for blemish prose. And it works extremely well, so yes. We actually have products for all age groups, another one that would be good for young skin is we have a charcoal scrub and a charcoal mask, and again, you wanna detox the skin, you wanna take out the debris, the Calen and bentonite clays are wonderful for detoxing skin and then, of course, Carol's been around forever. It is an absorption ingredient, and that's a little different than absorption, so ad or it pulls the toxins into it, abortion is like a magnet, it pulls it to the outside and then holds it. charcoal has been in use for beauty purposes since Cleopatra days, but it is a very effective detox ingredient and was actually what was used in the gas mass in World War II.
We still use it in medicine today, particularly veterinarian medicine, if an animal injustice poison, the first thing you do is you fill in floral, so it's really an amazing ingredient, and the mask is a lot of fun because it looks funny to my daughter used with those and I'm like, Whoa, she always puts yourself on Instagram or a Snapchat or something to like, Wow, that's crazy.
But anyway. Okay, thank you for pointing that out.
Are there any key words or specific attributes that consumers should look for on natural skin care packaging for Vegan... Cruelty-free, gluten-free.
I think the consumer should look for all the things that they would expect a good natural product to be, and that means recyclable, vegan, non-GMO, all of the attributes that you would expect in a natural product, they should look for those, but more importantly, because anybody can do put anything on packaging basically, they need to know the company and they need to know the integrity of the company, when I take supplements, I make sure I take them from companies that I know and respect because it's just... That's the way it works. You wanna make sure that you're using or taking products with a lot of integrity, so I think it's more important that the consumer have some sort of relationship with the company, at least call them and say What percentage of this active ingredient is in there, just as sort of a quiz. That's good, great advice. What other anti-aging products can be used to diminish the signs of anti-aging Logan care strategies can you suggest... For one thing, you can use a hydration strategy, higher LINC acid is a great ingredient to look for, higher LINC acid holds 1000 times its weight in moisture, and so by putting that next to your skin, you're actually pumping the skin... That smooths out fine lines and wrinkles, and then of course, the hydration is a good thing for keeping the skin healthy, so that's one thing you can do if you have firming issues, you can look for an ingredient called D-M-A-E. Now, Dr. Parco made it, wrote a book and did a bunch of infomercials based on DME, Avalon and Esther, he called that combination the wrinkle cure, so you can find that now in several of the natural skin care products. But basically, DME has been proven by Johnson and Johnson to be affirming agent, and that's one thing that you might wanna look for if you're noticing a little bit of sagging jaw line or maybe something on the decal area, etcetera, so firming is certainly an anti-aging strategy, one other thing as we age, our exfoliation Process slows down, and when your exfoliation Process slows down, you have dead and dying skin cells on the surface of the skin that enhances that fine lines and wrinkles look, and Dell skin doesn't look that appealing. Anyway, so as we age, we really should exploit the skin maybe once or twice a week, depending upon the condition of the skin, I was just gonna ask you how often we should be...
I would... Basically, what you can do since you're using a topical scrub, is you can look at your skin, if you're seeing a redness that stays beyond the scrubbing period, you're scrubbing too hard and you can lead to skin burn out because you're actually removing the skin physically, another way that you can exploit the skin, of course, is with appeal, so you could use a Lahiri acid that works differently because what it does is it dissolves the little lipid bonds between the skin cells, and so it pulls the skin off that way, so the grab is a physical means... And then alpha-hydroxy acid is a chemical means basically of exfoliating the... So explaining that and... Should men do that too?
Absolutely. Okay, now men have an advantage over us because they usually... A lot of people of men shave every day, not everybody, I was gonna look at you too quickly, and shaving exploits the skin, so by shaving they're actually doing that function, but yes, they should be doing it on their forehead and other places where they're not shaving.
Okay, let's talk a little bit about protecting our skin from the sun, because we live in southern California, I attend that, I know that we are protecting the Sun... Right, right. And the American dermatology Association, the ADA, has done a remarkably good job of brain-washing everybody to think that they must wear an SP from the moment they walk out of the house... In the morning till night.
Right, right.
So the truth of the matter is that you do wanna have about an hour's worth of Sun everyday exposure for health without it being inhibited, but then you do need to protect your skin, especially as other Coonan, we live outside. Right. And so you wanna use a good Sunscreen... SPF-30 is perfect. And what does SPF 30 mean? It means that you can be in the sun 30 times longer than without it, so when people say, Oh, we need a 50 year, We need more... You really don't... 30s, what you really, really, really need.
Now, let's go one step further. Let's talk about the different types of sunscreens, you can get chemical sunscreens, which again, in our industry, we don't wanna do that, that's what you would find a Manan boat and copper tone and people like that. Then you have the mineral-based sunscreens, which are either titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, those are what you wanna use, but let's talk one step further about the fact that many of these are now nanoparticles and nano particles are something that is less than 100 nanometers long, nanoparticles have now been shown in research to be more toxic than possibly even asbestos, so you don't wanna use nanoparticles and nano particles are not only found in SPS, they're found in sunglasses, and I've seen on air advertise them in a curling iron. So this is the soap box that you vote with your dollars, don't by nano.
So in sun care, it's very important that you look for products that are not nanoparticles, and the way you'll know is it'll say Non-nano, because the people that are using nano aren't gonna make... Aren't gonna say, Gee, we're using nano, but you're gonna look for products that say non-nano. So that's very, very important.
You also wanna make sure that you're not using any of the benzos because those damage the reef, so within our natural community, not a lot of people are gonna be using that type of ingredient, but you still wanna check because if you're going snorkeling or something, you don't wanna be adding to the damage, so I kind of was hearing you say the mineral-based sunscreens were the ones corrected, but then you don't want nano... Not nano.
Okay, exactly.
What about people that have had... My husband's had several instances of skin cancer removed, but... Do you still suggest 30? SPF, yeah, no, 30 is fine, but he needs to make sure he keeps it applied.
I mean, if you're dealing with skin cancer where your body is already triggered to form that, then you wanna be more careful, you should wear sunscreen morning tonight and has a... Exactly, I mean, my preference is for people to wear hats and long sleep clothing because that's the safest thing to do with your skin, but yes, we have all kinds of SPF products out there for people who want to apply something.
Okay, and then the trend now is those mineral-based Brushes, have you see knows where you can actually get your zinc and titanium dioxide in an SPF, 30 in a mineral brush, and then you can just... You can just brush on your SPF over your favorite moisturizer.
Really?
Yeah, so... That's a very cool trend.
Wow, I haven't even seen this. So that's good to know too. Wow, wealth of knowledge. Of course, you're Dr. Linda mile, I listen to you, you can come on anytime. Is there anything I haven't asked you that as another trend that we should know about that we... Insists much trend, I would just, again, encourage consumers to really check out products and make... The other thing that people try to do is they try to do everything, so when you go to your skin care section, figure out what the biggest issue you have, is it firming, is it wrinkles, Is it prevention? Maybe you have got great skin and you wanna prevent any damage, so figure out what it is, and then buy the products that are appropriate for that, and if you are gonna try to deal with two situations at one time, say you wanna use the affirming product and you wanna use a high anti-oxidant product, so then what you would wanna do is not layer it because as soon as you put on a cream, you provide a moisture barrier to the second cream, so you can use a serum and a cream together, you can put the serum on first and the cream over, that does work by two creams do not work, so then you would wanna use the one cream in the morning and the other... Cement night.
Yeah.
Okay, thank you.Interesting information. Well, thank you for your time. We've got some great advice here from Dr. Linda miles, and we really appreciate your knowledge and we look forward to having you on again, but in the meantime, you can get more information with Dr. miles on our website, drama-
