He is an author of several books including mushrooms for health and longevity, and seafood sense the truth about Seafood Nutrition and Safety. And I welcome you to the mother's market radio show.
Thank you.
How are you?
I'm good.
We welcome you to the show and we wanna know a little bit about you, and for those who be ones that may not be familiar with your mission and your work, why don't you fill our audience a little bit before we get to the show's topic.
Sure.
Well, as you say, I'm a clinical nutritionist of about 30 years now, basically what I do is I help my clients personalize a program with diet and supplements based on their present condition, their health goals, their metabolism or body type, their blood type, all kinds of things like that those are clues about how we should be eating, it's just something near and dear to my heart because it's something we have control over in our daily lives and influences our long-term health prospects.
So it's one of the most important things we can do in terms of energy and wellness and avoiding the common diseases are epidemic proportions these days... Absolutely, and things change as we know, so, well today, we're gonna discuss eating mushrooms for health and longevity. So let's begin by asking, what makes mushroom special and why do we need them?
Well, mushrooms are unique and mushrooms, such as RAI and Mike take shit, they've been revered throughout history in Ancient China and Japan, at times, they were so valuable that only the emperors were allowed to have access to them, and now we've got about 20-30 years of modern research, demonstrating their health benefits and validating their traditional use, which is to protect health and increase longevity. The other thing that makes them unique is, you think about it, they're not an herb, they're not a vitamin, they're in the fungal family, and they might turn some people off and you think of moldy bread or something like that, but because of that, they have special properties they're in this, what we would call the third kingdom, so they're very unique, and now in natural food stores are carving out their own niche, you have whole sections of nothing but mushroom supplements... No, that's interesting that you call that the third kingdom, so let's talk a little bit about the nutritional benefits, as you say, we're carving out this whole area in the nutritional stores here right now, I think mushrooms are often overlooked for their nutritional value, they're high in protein as a matter of fact, there's a product you can find in the natural food stores and the frozen section, it's sort of a meat analog and a soy alternative, it's actually a fungal protein, but besides that, you can find B-vitamins and mushrooms are the only vegan source of vitamin D, other than sunlight and vitamin D, Sarah's been in the news a lot. We sometimes think of it for being important for the bones, batters out Vitamin D is one of the most exciting anti-cancer nutrients, so mushrooms, very nutritious and high and fiber, and they also have a polysaccharide, which is a type of carbohydrate that is involved in cellular immunity, really, can you expand on that a little bit?
Yeah, cellular immunity, that's the most important aspect of our immunity, we're talking about the white blood cells, the travel of the blood stream and the tissues, and you could actually find receptors on these cells for the... They're called beta-glycan is a kind of poly-poly sarit in the mushroom, you could actually find receptors on these cells for the beta glue and sort of activates them, so it turns out mushrooms are one of the best things drug or a natural product for activating cellular immunity, and you think about it, there really is no drug that strengthens community that can only come from food, and especially something like mushrooms.
I'm intrigued because mushrooms, how many kind of mush we talking about... You mentioned a couple right off the top of the show here, we're talking about several kind of... Me, sure, there's thousands. And the ones with the most medicinal value would be the ones I mentioned earlier, like rahi and she take and my take, they've been revered for thousands of years, but now we've got all this good solid scientific research. People may not realize that the all time best selling anti cancer drug is a mushroom extract, it's called PS comes from the carolus room, but you actually have at your disposal, as I mentioned, in your local natural food store, for example, my take mushroom, and specifically an extract called de-fraction, which has actually been compared to PSG from which the cancer drug is derived, turns out in my talk he has even more potent anti-tumor properties then the drug does, and it can be taken orally.
I was just gonna ask you how you take that, so the extract, you take it in the form of a pill or something, it's actually available as a liquid extract or in a dry form in a capsule.
And so is this sort of just coming out onto the scene, people don't realize that the importance or... Mushrooms, right? I think they are very much overlooked, consumers are just beginning to learn about them, but mushrooms are being used in clinics now, like Cancer Treatment Centers of America, what kind of health conditions might mushrooms be useful for?
Many of what the scientific studies show that mushrooms have antibacterial properties, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergenic, they are what we would call adaptions, they help us to adapt to various stressors and return altered body conditions back to normal. But the one thing they all have in common is this immune-enhancing property and anti-tumor property, and as it turns out, the research is showing benefits breast cancer, prostate cancer, and activating certain genes in the body that are responsible for what is called apoptosis, and that is the natural cell death, cancer cells, unlike healthy cells that keep growing and growing, but the mushroom extracts like the mito de-fraction actually stimulate genes, the trigger apoptosis and natural cell suicide.
So the cancer area is very exciting, at what point... How young can somebody start taking this because it is a fungal... It's a mushroom that young children, or for instance, anybody can take a mushroom supplement, including children, and you don't have to have a serious condition like cancer to benefit any example of low immunity, whether it's calls are flu. They would be good to use. I encourage people to eat and have mushrooms in their diet, but if they want more of a more powerful and consistent effect, then they should consider a mushroom supplement as a daily supplement, in my opinion. Yeah, this would be a benefit to always have this at some... Absolutely, what you're saying, the us a little bit about the research behind the matale mushroom.
Well, as I say, Mike, talk specifically de-fraction, most anti-cancer research involves using that type of a fraction where they actually concentrated the beta glycan, the immune-enhancing portion of the mushroom, so that would be the product of choice, but my take itself is good for what I would call conditions of excess, whether it's excess blood pressure, Excess blood sugar, excess body weight, it tends to have a normalizing effect, as a matter of fact, I mentioned the blood sugar, researchers have also identified another fraction of the mito that's responsible for modulating the blood sugar level and helping to keep the blood sugar level in a normal level, and this particular fraction, it's different from De-fraction, this one is called X fraction, and that's proving to be beneficial for diabetics.
So a lot of potential for that. As you know, I'm sure you're aware. We're in the midst of a diabetes epidemic.
Absolutely, this is... Again, I feel like we're really on this cutting edge, I could ask you, I wanna have you right here and to just really corner you with all of this, this is amazing information that we're really listening to right now, here on the mother's market radio show. Interesting, right now, we need to take a break. But we will be right back. Thank you so much and stay with us when we're back.

And now, back to our interview with nutritional consultant, Ken Babel, we're talking about eating mushrooms for health and longevity, can... What about blood sugar control can Italy be helpful?
Yes, particularly if you're using an extract that concentrates the portion of the mushroom responsible for that effect is what is called a glycoprotein in SX fraction, and basically what it does is it enhances insulin sensitivity, and just like the term implies, the cells... Muscle cells become resistant to the effects of insulin from this constant bombardment of high sugar in our diets, and eventually the cells become resistant, and as a result, blood sugar levels and insulin levels remain high, so the SX fraction is able to enhance the insulin sensitivity ourselves as it turns out that my toes extraction is a very beneficial for folks with diabetes, again, if they're looking for a natural product to complement good eating habits, and it's something I would suggest they look into that again, this is something that really just... We don't hear a lot about is the addition of the mushrooms into our diets on the natural way.
What can you tell us about Mayans main masses?
Lions domain. Boy, that's another fascinating one, the Lion's Mane would be the mushroom for cognitive function, and it turns out Lion's Mane has a constituent that is able to stimulate nerve growth factor, and in the 1980s, there was actually a Nobel Prize awarded for the discovery and isolation of nerve growth factor, nerve growth factor is something that is responsible for the maintenance, survival and regeneration of brain cells in adult life, the problem, however, with nerve growth factor, it's not something that can be administered as a drug, I think I would actually have to be injected or something, so the research turned to looking for sources of dietary things that can stimulate our own production of nerve growth factor, and to my knowledge, lines Maine is one of the few, if only food substances that can stimulate nerve growth factor.
Now, this is really something fascinating because I think the older we get, we all... Is this something that... Somebody with Alzheimer's, are you talking about somebody that's losing or is this something as we all get older or... So that's where the research is headed and talking about getting older, half of us that make it into our 80s will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, it's kind of scary, and the lions main extract... Now, this particular extract, it's called a mellow band, that kind of sounds like amyloid, which is the kind of plaque that forms in Alzheimer's patients, a Miliband as actually been compared with an Alzheimer's drug in rat studies and found to be equal or better to the Alzheimer's Drug. called Arise, by the way.
But in addition to that, when they sacrificed and the rats, they found that their brains had higher levels of nerve growth factor, again, and this is a kind of a cutting edge thing because I don't know that this has really made this into mainstream media with the onset of the mushrooms. addition into our diets.
Right, and if the drug companies had come up with something like this, they'd be shouting it from the rooftops, but the natural products just don't seem to get the coverage, is the drugs to... Well, if this is something that you and I were to just put into our diets, the Lion's Mane mushrooms, if I were to add this on to my plate every night for dinner perhaps, or is this a lion's mane mushroom? I might be asking a very stupid question right now, but I don't know, that is a lion's mane mushroom, something that I could just pick up at a mother's market at the store is where do I... It might be hard to find. Okay, but I know in Japan, there was a study done in a nursing home with aged individuals, many of whom had dementia, and they put five grams of Lion's Mane mushroom in their soup every day, and what they found was after several months, the patients that are able they were more independent, they were able to dress themselves and feed themselves and go to the bathroom by themselves, so yes, the mushroom itself can be eaten if you can find it, but on the other hand, if you want sort of a more consistent powerful effect, you'd probably wanna use the Miliband, which is the line's main extract that would have the most therapeutic value, if you will.
Okay, tell me a little bit more, what about Camilla mushrooms?
Again, we talked about how the wide range of the mushrooms that you've researched... What about drama-
Treme?
Another one of my favorites, this one is also edible Tremulis, wonderful. As sort of on a beauty food, because what it does, it as what we call a in time, it can help the body assimilate liquids and moisture helps the body retain moisture, as a matter of fact, it's actually been compared to hyaluronic acid, which I'm sure a lot of listeners are familiar with is a cosmetic ingredient, Trammell mushroom has actually better water holding properties than hyaluronic acid, so as a result, that's actually being used in topically now.
And if you like legend, turmel was said to be the beauty secret of the most beautiful woman in Chinese history, concubine Yang. He was a cortisone 8th century emperor.
Wow. And as the story goes, when she would walk through the garden, the flowers would bow to her out of respect for her beauty, Mella was supposedly her beauty secret... Oh my goodness.
So you can look for it in skin care products and have you got some recipes in my mushroom book?
Wow. So again, we're talking about the types of mushrooms, Do You Know What would readily be available at mother's... Well, yes, I mentioned de-fraction sex fraction, Tamil is available as a face cream, I believe it's called Aqua-
Mela, from what I recall, and there's a rather large mushroom section in the store, when you begin to hear about all these wonderful benefits of mushrooms and mushroom supplements, it might be hard to choose one 'cause they all sound so good, in which case, you might wanna consider maybe a mushroom combination that includes several mushrooms and even some of those extract forms that I mentioned.
So why should people consider a mushroom supplement?
Well, I think if they're really a health enthusiast and mushrooms are really suited to the health challenges that we experience now in the 21st century, whether it's diabetes or cancer or whatnot, they are such a good choice to strengthen our immune system and help prevent glucose levels from rising and have them in the diet, but I think it would be very wise to have a mushroom supplement as well, it's good insurance, health insurance.
What made you interested in mushrooms?
Because they're so unique. And if you look at traditional Chinese formulas, herbal formulas, for example, the mushrooms in the formula are often called the emperor of the formula, in other words, they're the most important ingredient in the formula, and many of which are still being used today.
I think it's so fascinating, again is, and you've done your research, you have found everything about this, and I think it's so untapped, but you've written your books... Tell me a little bit about the books that you've written. mushroom was for... What is it? mucosal health and long geyser health and longevity.
So yeah, I handed you to talk a little bit because they're available at mothers... Yes, the book is available at mothers and we've got some beautiful photographs in the book, I've got recipes, I talk about the traditional use of mushrooms as well as the scientific research, well, you've done an amazing job and opening up the world of mushrooms and really... That's both are fascinating.
Thank you.
