How are you, Tina?
I'm good, thank you. It's really nice to be here.
Well, it's nice having you here, why don't you fill our audience in a little bit on your mission and work before we get to this show's topic. Absolutely happy to.
I think many of us who find our way into the natural products industry have a personal story behind us, and mine has always been a bit of a labor of love, if you will, I've always been really interested in natural healing, plant medicine, herbs and Whole Foods, and that journey really skyrocketed when I became a mom and became even more interested in treating my children holistically and with anything that we have a passion about, sometimes the knowledge just sticks really easily, and I quickly became the go-to person in the community for other people who wanted to treat their children naturally and new chapter, the company I work for now is based just 15 minutes from my home, and when a job in the Education Department opened up, it was a real easy transition into doing this for work, so I feel really blessed. Very fortunate, never a day goes by where I'm not learning new things, and my passion is to really share that knowledge with people in any way possible. Excellent.
Today we are talking about the benefits of taking multi-vitamins and it would be very interesting, so there are some conflicting reports though in the media about whether or not multi-vitamins have any benefit to overall health and what is new chapters take on this? I'm really glad that you brought that up because being a company that has a wide variety of different product lines, multi-vitamins being one of them, it can be unfortunate to see all the conflicting media reports because of course, people are out in the marketplace looking to better their health, and if they're putting their investment in something that mainstream media saying is not going to be helpful to you, Well, that's not helpful for us either, but new chapter is really different. We take a whole food approach to all of our supplementation, and so the media reports that come out have really been looking at certain health factors and how multi-vitamins may or may not benefit certain risk factors, like cardiovascular health, mood, health, different areas where they're saying, Well, I'm not sure people are really living longer from taking a multi-vitamin, so don't bother taking them, and that's not actually the case if you're taking the right multi-vitamin, the majority of multi-vitamins on the marketplace, whether you're in a traditional mass food mass market store or health food store consist of chemical isolates, and humans have never really got nutrition that way over the thousands of years that we've been on this planet, and so new chapter really believes in delivering the wisdom of nature, we deliver our multi in the form of fermented whole food. And what makes New Chapters multi S even more interesting, I feel, is that our company founder, Paul show, like when he started the company back in the 1980s, he was actually using the multi-vitamins as sort of a Trojan horse to get more herbs and more fermented super foods into people's diets. He knew that she really change someone's health or multivitamin has to really work for you, and that you can't just pile on a number of synthetic vitamins and minerals and expect good health to just occur, that real health comes from a complete healthy diet. And if you're looking to really supplement what's missing and most Americans diets, it's fermented food and its herbs and spices, people in the Mediterranean region eat Rosemary and Regina and all these herbs every day. The Japanese have the healthy longest life expectancy on earth because they each injure every day and they eat fermented foods every single day, so new chapter wants to bridge that gap between supplementation of really putting in your body every day, what you're actually not getting through your food and in this case, it's really cultural in a lot of ways, well, that research is really what you're talking about when your chapter adds to it and bridging that gap as you mentioned, what does someone want to look for in a multivitamin that could actually make a difference in their health.
Excellent, so I think the very first thing is someone's going to want to look for a truly Whole Food multivitamin, now even that category has really confusing over the last 10 years or so, as more and more companies have jumped into that, that line.
So honestly, a whole food multivitamin is going to be fermented, it's going to contain the benefits of beta-Lukens from that fermentation, beta-glycans are natural compounds that are found in some grains, certainly medicinal mushrooms, and they really activate your immune response and your detoxification enzymes. You're going to want a multi-vitamin that provides the vitamins and minerals as whole food complexes and has the fermented herbs that you're not going to get anywhere else in your diet. There are other companies, like I mentioned, that that do provide whole food multi, and they may even provide some foods in them, but I really encourage people to become experts at reading the label, is it really going to benefit you to have a little bit of oranges or carrots in your multi-vitamin or do you really want the healing nourishment of things that you won't get anywhere else, like astragalus and Elderberry and Ray, and these really tonic complementary herb.
So those are some of the first things that I would really encourage the other is feel free to ask, if you find a multi that you're interested in, feel free to call the company, ask them, Do you have any proof that this is any different than other things on the market, than taking an islet. Then not taking anything at all. And something that new chapter really prides ourselves on is proving it, so when we bring a product to market, we make sure that we have done pre-clinical research to ensure that not only are the ingredients completely safe and efficacious, but that on a cellular level, they are doing something by the proof behind of what did they stand on... Exactly, that's good. And that's a great question for the consumers to ask, What are some times in one's life when one would definitely want to consider taking a multi-vitamin?
Sure is the first thing that comes to mind is clearly pregnancy, that is a time where every woman is told by her midwife or doctor to make sure that you have a prenatal multivitamin just to ensure that any gaps in your diet are being met, and a lot of women are battle morning sickness, which makes eating very healthy problematic at times, and we hear again and again that the many women can't tolerate their prenatal multivitamin, that it makes them even more nauseous, and a lot of that can be from the added iron that women need during that time, so one of the benefits of looking for a gentle fermented prenatal multivitamin is that you can take it on an empty stomach, and it's not gonna be constituting, it's not going to set your Valley... So that's the first thing that comes to mind. Certainly, the post-natal period as well is starting to gather more and more intention because what a lot of people don't realize is that your nutritional needs do change after you've had the baby, and many women are encouraged to simply keep taking their prenatal, which is a good option, but is it the best option? Well, what we're learning is that during the postnatal time, especially if a woman is breastfeeding, your nutritional needs change dramatically, you need more vitamin D-3, more iodine, more by 6, and there are tonic herbs that can be really supportive during this time as well.
So certainly those are the times that jump out and then... I mean, anyone looking for added energy in their day, and again, if you're getting the right things in your multivitamin, then everyone can use fermented foods every day, and everyone can use herbs, and I drank a lot of coffee, so I like extra B vitamins out the day right, who doesn't... That cloth is just a question, Is this... Are these vitamins timed released or this is this... Will this continue to add these energy... So I'm glad that you asked that and new chapter multi-vitamins are... I mean, yeah, I would say time release because they're a whole food, you digest them as you would eat in a healthy meal, so you have sort of a sustained release of nutrients over a few hours versus taking a synthetic chemical isolate it dissolves instantly in your system, and you know, shoots into your bloodstream and really can overwhelm the cells of your body, so... Yeah, I would say time relies, just like food, which kinda goes back to when you were talking about the pre-natal and all of endowed, get sick of it.
Exactly.
Get that shot of, Oh, there's a multivitamin allot beyond the reproductive years. Are there other times when a multi-vitamin could be helpful?
I would say that on a case-by-case basis, certainly, if someone's going through a period of low health or compromised immunity, I certainly tend to take them more when I'm traveling, and also, I would say as we age... Right, so it's a topic that we're gonna be all experiencing at some point, there's no cure for aging... Right, right.
So the 55-plus crowd, interestingly, there's some really great research going into that crowd of people right now, because the baby boomers are...
I think someone turns 60 every seven seconds right now.
Wow, it's amazing. And around that time period is also where your inflammation starts increasing, your DNA starts becoming more compromised, your immune system starts becoming compromised simply from age, there's no avoiding it, and of course, you want to live a long healthy life, and so exercise and eating right and all that, but again, if you're getting the right multi-vitamin, the added beta-Lukens and ferment New Chapters, 55 plus multi-contained asked of Anthony.
Yeah, so, so amazing. It's good for whatever, Alia, from your heart to your skin, to your energy levels. The reason why Stamen can swim upstream for miles and miles back to their spawning ground is because their pink due to ask as Anton, so imagine what having that in your daily multivitamin is really going to provide for you.
So again, really looking at aging in a healthy way, you know kids are finally out of the house and living their own lives, and you've got some time to really focus on yourself again, then laying a foundation with a good multi that you can take on an empty stomach just becomes a really easy thing to make part of your daily routine, talking about those multi-vitamins, do men and women really need gender-specific vitamins... Good question, yes and no. I would say for the younger female, you're going to want some of the added iron in there and the increased needs for Follett in case pregnancy does occur, men don't need the added iron, so there are some differences to pay attention to and what new chapter really likes to fortify the multi-vitamins with gender specifically, as well as those herbs, so for women, there are some gentle hormone balancing herbs, cruciform sprouted seeds for healthy breast support and hormone metabolism for men, there's a Prostate Support blend in there that include SAP Almada and Natal. So again, really making your multi work for you, what are the health concerns and how can we help you to address them?
Excellent, well, this is very interesting information, and right now you have to take a quick break, but more in just a moment, don't go away, we will be right back with... Shana will stay with us.
And welcome back to the mother's market radio show. And we wanna remind you that if you've missed any portion of today's show, you can find us on iTunes by searching mother's market or download the show from our website, mother's market dot com, click the link for radio and listen to the past shows. Plus download our Healthy Recipes and money savings coupons, all available at mother's market dot com, and now back to our interview with new chapter national educator Shan-a wall, and we're talking about multi-vitamins and it's very interesting information, we're really stretching this out, and it's very interesting and Shana, you mentioned fermented herbs being a useful part of the multi-vitamin complex, and is there anyone you wouldn't want... With the editors.
Well, honestly, everyone's unique yet, and we would encourage everyone to listen to their body, their intuition, and certainly their healthcare provider.
That being said, I do think it's worth mentioning again that when a new chapter formulated the multi-vitamins Paul Shula, again, use them as a Trojan horse to get more fermented herbs into people's diets, herbs even more than the fruits and vegetables that were encouraged to eat a plethora of every single day herbs provides such a ray of diverse phou Trent and antioxidants and nourish and compounds that we really don't get anywhere else. And new chapter formulates in a way where we deliver nutrients as whole food in a food form, but also in a food dose, so we're not megaton people with amounts of foods or herbs that they couldn't easily attain by eating a really healthy diet.
So for the majority of people, they're only going to win by having more added herbs in their diet, especially the specific ones that we've put in for stress and energy and digestive support with aloe and peppermint, and they're very gentle, they're very nourishing, and because they're not in there, and more than what we would consider dietary amounts, the majority of people are going to benefit from them, of course, any chapter always wants people to work with their healthcare provider if they're struggling with a particular health concern or they're on a large amount of medication or anything... We're not aware of any contraindications, but it's always good to have someone on your team... Sure, sure.
Talk a little bit more about beta-Lukens and their role in a daily beaming.
Thank you for asking because beta-Lukens are something that make a fermented Whole Food Malta, very unique.
So Beilein occur naturally in the cell walls of sacra as service, this is beneficial to know the lees that way, say, This is a beneficial probiotic organism that new chapter uses to ferment the vitamins and minerals, and the cell wall of this nutrient dense super food is ripe with beti Lukens, beta-Lukens also occur in medicinal mushrooms, which is why the mushrooms are so great for your immune system, and the way beagles work is they literally activate different areas of your immune system, from your natural killer cells to the T-cells and B cells, and remember, your typical multi is not doing this, right? This is where we're really making a difference on someone's physiological level, so Beilein are one way that... That occurs.
The other thing about the sacraments is that any time you're fermenting a food, whether you're turning milk and yogurt or say an demise or cabbage into kimchi, any time this is happening, you're creating what's called Fermin Tate, it's kind of like the fermented broth. Clearly, yogurt is a different substance than milk, and it contains formate as well, and ferment is so nutrient dense, it's why people who eat a lot of fermented foods have better cell turnover, they're more energized, they live longer, their inflammation is modulated, it's because of this nourishing broth. And that's something that is offered in a new chapter because we ferment... So again, one of the benefits of getting a fermented Whole Food multivitamin that also contains the beta glucose, you see these benefits in the research for the elderly population, can you talk about that as far as these multi-vitamins... The interesting thing about being a dietary supplement company and being very regulated by the FDA is that we actually can't test against disease endpoints.
Right, and so I think that's what makes it tricky with some of the media reports that come out about multi-vitamins not being effective, they are measuring against disease end points, but they're measuring chemical isolated multi-vitamins that people buy for 999 in the mass market and... Yeah, they're lifeless. They're just molecules. They don't do anything, really. And when we talk about as people age on another thing that becomes compromises the digestive system, and so what the media has also found is that people who are taking these chemically isolated multi-vitamins that there are these tablets that are held together with synthetic binders and synthetic glues, and they actually don't break down in someone's system, especially a compromised digestive system, which unfortunately most people have, 'cause again, we don't need for mentor foods and things like that, but one of the interesting reports that I had heard in the media was that the amount of undigested tablets of multi-vitamins in the sewer lines and the septic tanks of people taking them that they literally do or can, depending on the product you're taking, simply pass through undigested, which would skew those reports on the Southeastern that multi-vitamins wouldn't work because they're not digesting they're not being digestive.
Yeah, yeah. So therefore, it's fascinating, once you've left the curtain there products industry and see some of these... Yeah, just see, some of the differences that we have available. Not all multi-vitamins are the same, are really not... Well, that is very interesting. I'm her new chapter mentioned the concept of the multi-herbal before, so what is the relation to a multi-vitamin versus immaterial... I'm glad you brought that up.
Okay, so multivitamin, everybody, pretty clear on one with that, right, new chapter was an herbal company first and foremost, our founder is a master herbalist, he's been doing this for 40 years as a real love for plants, and again, we talked about the multi-vitamin as a way for him to get more herbs into people's diet, and if we really kind of back up a little bit and take a bit of a 360 view, we have a lot of food in America and... Do we have macro-nutrient deficiencies? Probably not, right. There are some micronutrient deficiencies and again, more reason to have your whole food multi, etcetera, but what we're really lacking is herbs and spices, we did not grow up in India eating curry every day that has all those... The rich tumor can... All the carries and the dolls and things like that, we're not from Japan, we don't eat ginger with every meal, and so what's really deficient in our diet is herbs and spices, and I think... We come by it honestly. I didn't learn to cook as a child, my mom was a child of Depression era parents, and meat and potatoes were what... We had a flavor, butter and salt that was like, You're lucky, right? But what we're learning now is the cultures that really have a lot of herbs and spices just as part of their daily diet, live longer, healthier, more vibrant lives than those who don't.
So with that in mind, a new chapter has this idea that, yes, take your multivitamin and then take your multi-herbal, get those herbs and spices into your daily diet, and what that's going to do first and foremost, that I think a lot of people would appreciate is modulate your inflammatory system, some of those aches and pains that we get as we age and our joints, things like that, when you're eating enough of the right spices, your inflammatory system is modulated and not only does that make you more comfortable, but inflammation leads to almost every system in the body, so you could be having a lot of side benefits as well to your heart and your mood, and they're starting to link a lot of things, so new chapter would encourage someone to look for a multi-herbal, that one just actually just to tweak my back... And you don't realize that that inflammation and your back is connected to everything, so... But what does that look like? That multi-ARBA, it also looks like in the form of like a multi-vitamin... Is that what it looks like?
It's a little different. New chapter, our product, the multi-ARBA would be Eileen. We actually, if we had known that the product was gonna be so popular, we probably would have needed something else that...
Eileen is a combination of 10 herbs and spices. We do will extract them using only super critical CO2, water and alcohol, so no chemicals, no high heat, and because the the extracts are liquid in part, they're actually in like a cap or a vegetarian capsule, it's the through... You can see the herbs, but it's the multi would be more tablet-Ed, and this is in a capsule, so really easy to take completely vegetarian and It's so easy, it's so easy to make small changes that are going to improve your health, it... Exactly.
Well, let's break it down one more time for our listeners and just what the attributes are in the multi-vitamin and also what they actually make a difference in our health, and you've done a great job of really opening our eyes, and if there's anything we've missed here good, thank you. I would be remiss if I didn't say to make sure your multi is organic and with all of the information coming in about genetically modified organisms, look for that non-GMO project-verified seal as well, right.
We want the fermented vitamins and minerals, you want to make sure you're getting those beta-Lukens and fermat, you want fermented herbs, right. And we want to make sure that the company is a responsible Trusted Advisor based in tradition, that makes sense and also proven by science.
Excellent, well, thank you so very much for your time and you're a great advice and we really appreciate your knowledge and look forward to having you on again in the meantime, you can get more information on Shana and your website, new chapter dot com, and we look forward to our next visit. Thank you so much.
Thank you.
