Plus later, we'll tell you what's going on around town and tell you what's new at mother's market, but first step were joined by the CEO and founder of Manitoba hemp foods. Mike Satake has a background in diet and nutrition and is the director of the Canadian Organic Trade Association. He has won numerous awards, including the young entrepreneur of the year, 2004 socially responsible business award, 2006 and Company of the Year in 2010. and we welcome him to the mother's market radio show.
Mike, how are you?
I'm doing fine, thanks for having me.
So why don't you fill in our audience a little bit on your mission and your work before we get to the show's topic, mandible harvest is all about educating people on the environmental and the health benefits of hemp, growing him right from the supply... Right up to the market and supporting sustainability is driving for stain ability and everything that we do today, we're talking about how hemp can improve our help.
So let's start by asking you what is him emphasised?
It's grown for the seat is very rich in protein and essential fatty acids, so it's made into a number of different products, but eaten for the essential fat, so megami... Why he... Not only a hemp foods delicious, they taste really good, they have a nice nutty flavor to them, but it's also a very rich source of omega-3 and omega 6, the essential fatty acids, also a very high quality source of vegetable protein.
So how long is Manitoba harvest head food's been around?Mandible harvest, we've been in business since 1998, we love the government in Canada to legalize him, and then we set up a vertical integrated business, which we're working directly with farmers, we own the facility, we make and package all the products and we bring those to market and to mother's market, that's really great for quality control and it's great for Mother's market.
So why did you get started in this? What was your motivation for starting Mannitol? The harvest Hanford, I have an interesting background. I used to wait 300 pounds. When I was young, I wasn't education about health, and the fast food movement took effect on me, and when I turned 18, I decided to change my diet and changed my lifestyle and lost over 100 pounds, but I did that on a no-fat diet, and I learned the hard way that your body needs fats, those essential fatty acids, omega 3 and omega 6, and so when researching all the sources of essential fat ass, I came across him and hemp is one of the richest sources of essential fats, and I thought that there was a good opportunity to change the world and make the world a healthier place.
Well, that's what you're doing. You're making the world a healthier place and you're making strides.
So Mike, what's unique about the Omega is found in hemp and how maybe benefit people, hemp is one of the richest plant sources of omega 3 and omega 6, and not only is it one of the richest sources, it has more essential fats than flags or ghost, but the balance of Omega 3 to Omega 6 and hemp is ideal. It has 4 to one ratio. I make a 62 mega 3. hemp also contains some of the longer chain that other seeds like flax chia don't have, and that's Gambela on the mega 6 side and stardom acid on the omega-3 side, and those longer chain fats are very, very therapeutic, which is why the amp is prized as an oil seed, so how could an average everyday person work hemp into their diet and Mangal harvest, we manufacture several different products, but our flagship product is Hamar, which is the soft kernel or the heart of the hemp seed, and the hearts have a rich source of protein and a rich source of essential fatty acids, they have a really nice Ney flavor, tastes similar to a sunflower seed and you sprinkle on food, most people like it sprinkled on salad, serial and yogurt, but you could use it in baking, you put into a smoothie. It's really a tasty way to get extra nutrition in your diet every day... Well, that's interesting. Well, there seems to be a lot of misconceptions about omega-6s, what do people need to know, or why would people want... The M86 is found in hemp.
There are some misconceptions about Omega-6 where some people think that they get too much omega in their diet, and the too much omega 6 comes from hygiene vegetable oils or trans fats, those bad fats that are out there in the market, from processed foods. But your body needs omega 6 fats, but you need a healthy omega 6 fat that hasn't been heated or hasn't been hydrated, and you get that from healthy seat sources like him.
So let me ask you another question. We've learned a lot about Omega, the 369. how does this differ from fish oil?
Hemp is the richest plant source of essential fatty acids, so you can get a long chain fats from fish oil, but hemp provides the raw mega 3 and omega 6 that converts into longer chain fats, new diet. So instead of getting oil from a fish, you get it from a plant, giving it a much more gourmet to... It has a nice neat flavor where a lot of people maybe don't like the taste of fish or that fish taste... Well, that sounds very interesting to have to give it a try.
Great information, and right now, we'll need to take a quick break, more help information in just a moment. Don't go away, we'll be right back. Or welcome back to the mother's market radio show. And now back to our interview with Manitoba CEO and founder, Mike Fana, and we're talking about how hemp can help us.
So my plant-based diets are gaining in popularity with a lot of celebrities reading about plant-based diets lately, why do you recommend adding more plant-based foods and protein into a diet?
Well, first and foremost, plant-based foods are easy to digest for a number of consumers, not only are they very easy to digest, but they offer a lot of nutrition, hemp and general plant-based protein, very easy to digest. Great tasting protein, omega-3 mega essential fatty acids. Really, the building blocks for proper nutrition. Now, I was reading a little bit about you, and of course, Dr. Oz has been raving about you, and Oprah must be great obviously for your company and for what they're saying about you and... Obviously, great for your company.
Yeah, and more and more are waking up and realizing how healthy and great tasting hemp foods are in their diet and are looking to experiment more with them on our products becoming more and more widely available out in the marketplace and at mother's market, and a lot of consumers are buying them. Very, very, very interesting.
So for somebody that's really never jumped on the hemp train yet yet... Right, when you were explaining that to people, obviously, and when you're selling your product and you're saying how great it is and how healthy it is... How do you explain it?
Yeah, so hampers is our flagship product, which is just the soft inner kernel of the hemp seed or the heart of the hemp seed, and it really tastes good, and it has a nice negi flavor similar to the sunflower seed, that's how we introduce it to a lot of consumers, but not only does it taste good, it's very easy to use, you sprinkle it on food, on salad, serial yogurt, and then it's very rich in protein and very rich in essential fatty acids, so for most mainstream consumers, it fits into their diet, to their lifestyle, they're making, whether they're vegetarian or vegan, or they're just adding to look to add a little extra vegetable protein in their diet, or looking for a great tasting snack. Him foods fit in.
So it tastes good and it's good for you.
Yeah. So what sort of differences have people noticed by incorporating hemp foods into their everyday life?
Well, it's changed my lifestyle, first and foremost, but because I've lost over 100 pounds and then have kept it off for a number of years by feeding myself proper nutrition, but because of the essential fatty acids in hemp food, a lot of people notice differences in their energy level and their skin, hair and nails, 'cause most consumers in the US don't get enough essential fatty acids in their diet, there's not enough omega-3 specifically in a lot of foods, and so when you start eating foods rich in Omega 3 like camp, you start noticing impacts and most of it is external at first, and then you feel it on the insights being proper digestion and which increases your energy.
What has been the most significant stories you've heard from people... We have a tremendous amount of testimonials on our website, Manohar dot com, from seniors that are eating him parts or hemp oil, and it's giving a benefit to their arthritis systems, 'cause hemp is very rich, a Gallic acid, which is a long chain omega 6, which is an anti-inflammatory, it's very therapeutic. Also for people that are suffering from Emporia is also in omega 6 deficiency, and if you're taking in a food rich in Omega 6 with GA like camp, they've noticed impacts as well.
We also have people that have went and got their cholesterol tested and they had high HDL cholesterol and low LDL cholesterol, and they started eating hemp foods and that had a positive impact on their cholesterol, they didn't take any other medications, so we don't make any of those claims, those are consumers coming in and telling us all about their positive experience, and that's been over the last 15 years.
Wow, well, that's incredible.
And I'm sure that makes you feel so good as well with... And it does, and that's where someone like Dr. RAs is really sharing that message, and in the last couple of years has said to consumers that the Americans should be eating ham for breakfast, lunch and dinner, he is and his family isn't the healthier for it, and it's just getting that word out there.
And you mentioned your back story a little bit, your back story, you said you lost over 100 pay when I was young, I wasn't educated about health, and I grew up on fast food, and I found myself being 18 years old, waiting 300 pounds, and I became sick and tired of being sick and tired and decided to do something about it, and it really started with changing my diet, and over the last 15 years, I've been really educating myself about proper nutrition, and that's how I discovered him foods.
I went on a path of a no-fat diet, which I don't suggest anyone tries because you're body needs those essential fatty acids, and it was really starving me of essential fats, but when I started eating hemp and foods, other foods rich in Omega 3, I started feeling really having more energy, which made me wanna exercise more, and it naturally kept off that weight, so from 300 down to 185 pounds, and I've been that way for the last 15 years at 185 pounds. Wow, I was gonna ask you about that, but it is sort of trial and error a little bit, isn't it, with finding out what works best for you and certain people with exercise and with fat possibly, and with the addition of finding what proteins... And it seems like Hemp is really what it has worked, which is nice because you're opening the API allowing us to find out what this is... Yeah, and not only we make him parts, but we have a full range of hemp protein powders, and a lot of people like him protein because again, because it's easy to digest, where if you've had... If you wanna make a smoothie, but you've had issues trying way or soy protein powder, 'cause it has a heavy feeling in your stomach, those are usually caused by allergens and soy and dairy or top allergens in the US, where if you're eating a food like camp, that's very easy to digest, you get the energy from the protein shake, but you don't have that heavy feeling in your stomach, and that's what a lot of people are going and trying all these different proteins because smoothies are becoming... They're easy and becoming a lot more popular to get nutrition, not only into families, but also unto children as well, and healthy protein sources like camp are leading the way now because of that... That taste good, they're easy, and they're good for you, and they do that heavy feeling though their proteins can have... That's what I've heard. That heavy feeling. What would you tell someone who wants to switch to a more plant-based diet and for instance, what is your diet right now?
It's not about restriction, it's really about replacement, taking foods in your diet that maybe are unhealthy and replacing them with healthier-based foods, so for me, I like making a smoothie, you can put in a lot of fruits and great tasting things with super foods like camp or... Coconut or Gog or some of these other great products that are out in the marketplace, blend it up, and you have a great tasting breakfast and kids love it as well. I have a four-year-old and two-year-old and they love having a smoothie is a smoothie for breakfast at lunch, a big salad in a rainbow-colored Salih, a lot of different veggies in it, and some lean protein are like salmon, different kinds of fish. And then for dinner, eating something simple, so like Ken law, and again, probably steam veggies and a good source of proteins of balanced nutrition throughout the day, but always eating with that healthy feeling in mind, 'cause I like to be light and I'm on the go, and I wanna be prepared to be able to work out at any time of the day, and I could tell you that I used to be sick and tired all the time, and now I'm never sick, and it takes a lot to get me tired.
He's just gonna say you have probably a lot of energy 'cause you're constantly... Yeah, it's natural energy, you don't need to... You don't need an energy drink or something to give you energy, can really get energy from proper nutrition in the diet, that sounds good and yeah, you're giving other people energy too, which is this inspiration. That's great. What can consumers expect? Next for the Hanford industry.
Well, I think from 15 years ago, when hemp wasn't available in Manitoba, harvest became a business and just really started that process, now hemp is becoming much more mainstream, so you're seeing a lot of products that are incorporating hemp into their product as well, hemp serials... He bars baking products and really trying to fortify foods with the nutrition that hemp offers, and I think you'll see more and more of that to progressing. We've seen that really over the last couple of years, that there's a lot of companies that are now interested in putting hemp as an agreeing to their product as well.
So you said 16 years is... Have you noticed it's a little easier now too, because people have opened their eyes up about hemp or just within the whole foods industry or just the industry? All around, yeah, 15 years ago, a lot of people would just sneak her and laugh because hemp and marijuana are both in the cannabis family, but hemp doesn't have any psychoactive drug, so there's no worry about getting high... You're failing a drug test. But a lot of people didn't know that that information wasn't readily available nowadays, a lot more consumers are educated on him, and they know that there's no... It's all positive, there's no negative to it, and that's why the amp foods are one of the hottest products in the natural products industry, because a lot of consumers are waking up to that media like Dr. as... And some of the other health advocates out there promoting hemp foods really, really help that as well, but we still think we're just seats just scratching the surface, 'cause a lot of consumers still don't know about him, but they're still just discovering it now, when we've been out in the marketplace for 15, 16 years.
Yeah, well, good for you. One thing do you want consumers to associate with your product, freshness and quality for Antares were vertically integrated, which is a fancy term to say that we grow, make and sell our own products, we work directly with farmers to grow the hemp seed, we own the facility where we make in package all the products and we bringing this product to market.
So mental harvest is known for freshness and from a quality standard, our facility certified to the highest level of food safety and quality certification in the world, so when you think mantles in freshness and quality... Right, good. How have you seen the natural foods industry change over the past 15 years?
I think super foods is the hottest, it's been progressing over the last 10 years, and more so even over the last five years, things like hemp, like cacao, like coconut, like Gigi, all these great things that are in mother's market stores and available now to consumers weren't five years ago, and so I think a lot of people are looking for more nutrition in their diet, in the industry is reacting by putting out all these healthy food products for consumers and making it easy.
Yeah, and these are things that terms and names that now we do here, and it's not... And some of them are actually making their way to mainstream, which also may or may not be a good thing, but at least people are actually hearing these now, so I don't know, what is your thought on that? Where it's becoming into mainstream, I think it's a good thing, I think your body is driven by proper nutrition, and so just having a good sources, protein, essential fatty acids, antioxidants, just give the body the fuel for what it needs and... Our mission is really to help them make the world a healthier place, and making these products available and educating consumers. So I think it's very good, and I think if we fast forward five or 10 years, we're gonna see that junk foods, even though I think they're still gonna be available, will be looked upon in a little bit different light because they don't provide really substance Nutrition for Life, so maybe those McDonalds drive-through might be like drive-through helpless, drive-through Manitoba Ryan, even fast food restaurants are trying to change, offering healthier items because people don't wanna feel sick and tired, and that's becoming mainstream now and saying, Well no, I wanna have energy and I wanna have natural energy, and more and more consumers are looking for that, that and that overall... It's true, I think we all wanna feel better and look at the change that you've manifest, a... Been able to sustain.
Anything else that you wanna say about your company and... Anything else that I have missed?
I think people get involved. We're really for helping to promote a non-GMO, we're really promoting organic... Were for promoting hemp, and there's a...
