Plus later, we'll tell you what's going on around town and what's new at mother's market, but first step, Jordan whitmer is the director of sales and education and the four genuine health, a company that pioneered the fermented whole food category, and it's the first company to create a comprehensive solution for nourishing the gut, Jordan helped launch genuine health in the US over eight years ago with a mission to bring better education and knowledge, as well as products that help to better nourish our bodies in a healthy gut so that we improve quality of life and we welcome him to the mother's market radio show. How are you?
Good, thanks for having me.
Thanks for being here. Why don't you fill our audience in a little bit on your mission and your work before we get to today's show topic... Sure, yeah, our mission as a brand involves helping people nourish their gut and for genuine health, that means it's a multi-faceted approach, so it's not just seeding the gut with the very best in probiotics, but it also means nourishing those probiotics so that they work better in the body, they are fed, they grow, they multiply and... Really improve people's quality of life.
Great. Well, today we're talking about gut health as we talked about... And so, Jordan, what are the philosophies that rule... Genuine health.
Sure, yeah, genuine health, if you're not familiar, has been in the natural products industry for actually over 25 years ago, we started out of Canada or one of the top brands in Canada, and from 25 years ago to today, we're all about improving people's quality of life, every single thing that we do is about improving people's quality of life in grading selection, making sure that we have the very best ingredients based on science, so you might hear me repeat that several times, where science-driven brand, everything about genuine Health is looking at the science innovation making sure that we have the therapeutic or research dose, and we're all about improving people's got like I just mentioned, so for genuine health, that means focused on a fermented nutrients, fermented Whole Foods, and how we can transform something into something that's so much better. And certainly, we have a multi-faceted approach to gut health as well, which I'm sure that we'll discuss, but our philosophies are largely about quality non-GMO organic whenever possible, and really helping people call their quality of life.
Why is multi-faceted approach so important to get health... Sure, well, I think a lot of people understand these days and the need of a probiotic, so they've heard that probiotics are good for gut health and immune health, and I think a lot of people think of gut health and probiotics is the single solution, but truthfully, there is a multifaceted solution so that you can get more out of your probate and really help heal your gut even better, and so for genuine Health, we have a philosophy that is prime prime your gut with the very best informative nutrition is really making things absorb better that are utilized by the body, so that your body doesn't have to work so hard, and then of course, we're talking about seed, which is the probiotic, so giving your very best probiotics, the healthiest, hardest probiotics, the best in the industry, so that we have the good bacteria to help nurse the body, nurse the gut, and then how do you get those probiotics to multiply and have really good health benefits throughout your body, we have to feed them and feed them through an amazing diet in the form of great fermented nutrients and also Piotr ENTS. So you'll hear when you talk about pioneering, which I really plan nutrients, vital nutrients are prebiotics, they help feed the gut, so the multi-faceted approach is prime, seed and feed, so prime your gut with the very best in fermented nutrition, seed your gut with the healthiest hardest living probiotics and feed your gut with the most amazing abundant Hinton Trent rich super foods, plant foods, whole foods that help feed the probiotics, and really what we're talking about here is creating diversity of good bacteria. Diversity is key, diversity means helping heal conditions like dysbiosis, which can transform people's lives... Again, we'll talk about... I'm sure. More about that too.
Can you talk a little bit about the difference between probiotics and prebiotics?
Yeah, sure. So probiotics, I think a lot of people understand there, in our case, they're pro their life, they're living probiotics, they really help create all the responses in the body that help with not only Guelph, but immune health and healthy inflammatory response, brain health is a big link to brain health and probiotics. So those, think of those as the most amazing little living cells and good bugs and us, that help with whole body functions, but how do they grow, how do they feed, how they survive and thrive in the body... Well, that's where the prebiotics nutrients come into play, so pre versus antibiotics, so these are the good bacteria that are the good prebiotics that help feed the gut and allow those probiotics to multiply grow and diversify healthily in the body. Why is it important to have a great gut health... Well, great gut health is important, and really what I would say great gut health is, first of all, let's start there is diversity of good bacteria, so it's not just taking a probiotic that has 100 billion or 50 billion good bacteria, it's about having the right types of probiotics and the diverse amount of probiotics in your gut for... And really so that you can have a quality of life... That's what we were talking about, right? Probiotics are so critical to life without them, we wouldn't be alive today.
I'm touching my skin right now, dodecanese that, but we have billions of living probiotics even on our skin that help with the health of our skin. If I go out in nature right now and I go trip a tree, there's gonna be laptop a sales plantarum working for us in nature, so really, probiotics are what help us drive survive and really help create all of the health benefits that we have for our health.
How do you know if your gut is healthy or it's not healthy, well, there could be many symptoms while one is maybe gut health issues, and what I mean by that is maybe you're bloated, maybe you have a lot of gas, maybe you have minor or major IBS, or crowns or colitis, or maybe you have brain fog, maybe your immune system's weak, which might mean you get more current of colds and flu, that could be a sign of a lack of diversity of good backer.
There's many things, almost all things now research is showing are linked to the guy... For example, I would just think I was just mentioning autism, autism, which used to be thought as a brain disorder, it's actually now been shown in research as a gut health disorder, so autoimmune conditions of all kinds. I have an autoimmune condition and I've helped heal myself in many ways through the introduction of what I'm talking about today of the prime seed feed approach to nourishing the gut.
I've been using probiotics for well over 15 years, and I've seen results from that, but then introducing really good wide variety of super foods, colorful foods and some fermented foods as well into my diet has helped transform my life, and I've been speaking with thousands and thousands of consumers as well, and they've had so many heart felt stories about how the similar approach to my approach, which is probiotics and really good diverse amount of colorful foods and fermented foods have helped allow them to have an improvement in quality of life, help improve their autoimmune conditions if they have that inside... So just to expand on that note about the foods, when you say super foods and colorful foods, what... Can you give me an example of that? Yeah, I mentioned phonetics, Sofia nutrients translates into plant nutrients, which think about colors, so there's a wide variety of colors or could be out there, and those happen to be lacking in most of the North American diets, final nutrients give plant car colors, they really help protect them but they're wonderful for the body, they provide so many health benefits, healthy inflammatory response, heart health, helping detoxify the body, help increase good back to your diversity of good bacteria, help with gut health, the list goes on. It's endless, vientiane are really critical to life. Again, the problem is that we don't get enough of them. We don't get the diversity of them, we're actually... And even organic foods were engineering our foods today that have a lower amount of ionians... Well, why are we doing that? That's crazy, right? It's because these are a little bit their foods and people with their pallets these days, they don't want the better food, so we're actually removing those amazing vientiane so that the food tastes better to the North American diet, but the problem is, is that we're having a lot of conditions today, all around not having enough, pioneering more inflammatory conditions, more auto-immune conditions, more childhood illnesses and such, which could certainly be related to the lack of diversity of good bacteria and the lack of diversity of finer ENTS in the diet. If I am taking a probiotic, what changes will I feel in my God?
Well, the key is getting a good one... I'm sure that we can agree to that. Not apropos are the same. It's about having probiotics that have, by science, have enough of the quality strains that are in there, that are strong, robust strains that actually will do something that can survive, the acid and bio conditions get in a small intestine so that they can actually thrive and survive, but let's just say you have a really good probiotic, the benefits that people can experience almost right away, if they have a really good one, is better digestion, so if you're consuming food, sometimes people get a little bit of indigestion or maybe they actually get a little bit... The common thing is gas and bloating, well, probiotics create enzymes and enzymes help break down food nutrients, and so probiotics are wonderful for healthy digestion, another benefit, and you might not see this immediately would be immune system.
So for me, always I load up on probiotics during the cold and flu season, and if something's going around, I have a couple of kids who get colds and flu pretty frequently, just before I left recipes intact, they had something and I loaded up on a bunch of probiotics, 'cause they're wonderful. For immolation, why is fermentation so important... While fermentation is really important, and it really dates back thousands of years ago, there's been intentional fermentation dating back over 10000 years, and it goes past just making sure that things are stable, fermentation improved nutritional quality, and so what I mean by that is you take... For example, plant nutrients and when you ferment them with good bacteria, you're providing something that has much better absorption utilization to the cells of the body, so that's always a good thing, you're getting more into the sasr body, 'cause a lot of these nutrients tend to be hard to absorb... For example, I'm gonna go back to final nutrients, final nutrients are wonderful for your body, we need them, so... So much the problem is, is that final nutrients are hard to absorb, so if you ferment plant nutrients to make them so much easier to absorb, and then we have the tolerability issue, right.
So when you ferment, you reduce, you help with a tolerability, reduce bloating, reduce gas, and by fermenting, you're also creating brand new compounds, it never exists in the nature, proofreading brand new prebiotic compounds at vadodara, you're creating brand new anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds that are stronger than the original parent con down, so you have a product that is going way beyond... Is an initial purpose.
This is so interesting. Great information right now. We need to take a quick break. But more in just a moment with Jordan. So don't go away, we'll be right back.

And now, back to our interview with genuine Health Director of Sales, Jordan Whitmire, and we're talking about gut health, and this is very interesting, of course, in the probiotics and such, but Jordan, we were also talking about fermentation before the break, but can you talk a little bit about genuine health fermentation process. Yeah, I would love to.
So when it comes to fermentation, there's three different types of fermentation, you have what a lot of people are probably familiar with with good bacteria probiotics, and there's also enzymatic fermentation and yeast fermentation, so think sour-do, Brad, that's done traditionally with yeast, but a lot of fermentation in the natural products industry has done with enzymes, which is not bad, it's good, it helps with removing what I call some anti-nutrients so that the product is better tolerated a little bit, but really, if you go back hundreds of years ago, our ancestors were using probiotics to ferment many different things, including plant nutrients, because probiotics love fibers, compounds that our body typically doesn't tolerate well, these are compounds which I just refer to as anti-nutrients like lectins and fight dates, that are boy struggles to break down inhibiting absorption, causing gas and bloating. So many people that I speak with, they have issues with bloating, and why is that it's because of these lectins and Pitts that our body has to break down when you use good bacteria, and that's what genuine Health does. We have the very best artisanal approach, fermentation, we're raising good bacteria to go to town on those anti-nutrients again, those elections and fits, so that you have no bloating and you have much better digest ability and much better absorption utilization, genuine health fermentation process is very unique to the marketplace, nobody else is doing this, I can tell you that, again, it's small batches, every hour on the hour, and that's important because if you're not monitoring fermentation, you can have micro-contamination, you can have mold... A lot of people can relate to this, and when they're doing the home Brecon bohs, sometimes you get a bad batch or why is that? A lot of times it's mold, so if you don't have a good solid quality team monitoring this every hour an hour that can develop a genuine health... Of course, every hour an hour we're monitoring to ensure there's no contaminants, known molds, we're stopping the fermentation process of the very right time so that we can guarantee results and guarantee much better utilization, 40% or utilization, much better tolerability, no bloat. So genuine health is really the leader, the pine or the innovator when it comes to fermented fermented nutrients, fermented proteins, fermented Piotr ENTS in the marketplace.
Well, that's interesting, and thank you for walking us through that process.
So can we talk a little bit about... You say that not all proteins are the same... What do you mean by that?
Yeah, so I was just mentioning that when you ferment proteins, they allow for better utilization.
So I'll take a step back. So a lot of people understand that not all fats are the same, there's different types of essential fats, even saturated fats, different types can have health benefits and not... Same with carbohydrates, we all know that some carbohydrates react differently in the body, but what a lot of people don't realize is that it's a same lay with proteins, not all proteins are the same, there's some proteins that are more nutrition-focused, there are some proteins that are much better absorbed, have a better amino Aprile that go be on just providing amino acids to the body, and that's where genuine health is really a leader. We go well beyond what other proteins do in the marketplace, we provide a protein that is by far the most absorbed, by far the highest quality in terms of increasing seven different sources, a product that has no bloat and improves got health. How does improve God help? Because when you ferment your creating brand new compounds like prebiotics that feed good bacteria, you're actually the only protein in the market that is these naturally current prebiotics that feed the gut.
How can your diet and stress affect your bed health in a very big way, stress, Rick's habit on your gut health, so when you're stressed and you have anxiety and so forth, research points to inflammation of the gut.
Now, what if someone has inflammation at what if they have is, then they're more likely to have stress, anxiety, depression. What they found through research is that if you have a healthy gut, which means a good diversity of good bacteria, you don't have dysbiosis, those people most often times have much better mental outlook, they don't suffer from depression, they have better mental clarity, acuity. So there's certainly a link to overall gut health and our brain health, what things can people do to improve their gut health, we talk to our... But now I can just repeat, so things that you can do for your gut health is, well, you can take supplements in the forms of probiotics, but really I would urge people to get high quality fruits and vegetables and a wide variety of colors because final nutrients are prebiotics that feed the gut, so you can think of anything quickly to do to change your gut health, it would get more colors, to get more diversity of colors, not just the two colors that are found in most North Americans diet. So by the way, two-thirds of North American diet just get two colors, reds and oranges. Now, you gotta go beyond that. Purple blues, greens, reds or yellows, get the, I think of a great salad, but get that off and in your diet, those final nutrients feed the good bacteria to help with overall gut health, and what factors are important when choosing a probiotic?
Well, when you're looking at a probiotic, of course, they're not all the same as we know, but what you really wanna look for is quality of the strains, are they research-based, and sometimes that's hard to know, it's trusting really high quality brands that focus around the science, and it's about the balanced formula, so what I mean is that you wanna look for a brand that has fully transparent labeling, a lot of brands, I'd say the majority out there, it's a proprietary formula, and I've actually had products tested the DNA testing to see how they stack... Are they well balanced or they really stacked heavy at the top, and the majority of products are stack heavy at the top, where 90% of the formula is the one or two strains, you're just getting a sprinkling... Well, the problem is, a lot of the research strains are in that little sprinkling, so you want a good balance formula, transparent labeling, and of course the quality. So you want something that has healthy party, strong strain, so you're trying to get a product that's actually gonna do something in your body, you want a product that's going to be asset and bio-resistant that targets that got for better utilization.
Okay, so I have a question about the difference of the potency in probiotics and the wide range that's... That's a good question that comes up of... And what's the potency? That I should use.
It really depends.
So if someone wants, it has fairly good health and they want extra support for their immune system and digestion, I would say starting with something at a lower potency would be great for them, like 15 billion... There's many different potency in the marketplace that go from one billion up to 100 billion, but from what I've seen, products that start around 15 billion are the ones that are really good for people that don't have a specific need or a specific condition that help with gut health and immune health.
Now, if someone has a specific condition, maybe they have Crohn's, colitis is autoimmune conditions, well, or maybe they've been on an antibiotic, then I would go usually with something with a higher potency, you might do that for a short period of time, if you're an antibiotic or if you have a condition. You might use it for a very long period of time.
So I guess it just depends on the person, and does it matter what your size is, or if you're a male and female or... Not a lot, no. I mean, it really depends more on the specific condition or the need for the individual rather than the size of the individual, and how often should we be taking them... My recommendation is daily, it doesn't matter what time in the day that you take it, I'm a creature of habit, so I like to take mine first thing in the morning personally, but it doesn't really matter, most you can take with or without food, but some don't have the right delivery system, which means that if you don't take it with food, you don't get as much absorption, so some probiotics have a unique lad release capsule, so that you can get with or without food, you get much better utilization, but the idea is daily, I guess, is to answer your question, some people, they might take it when they can remember once a week. Well, that's good, but if you really want overall health and immune health, I would take it daily, and if someone's on an antibiotic, they might take it multiple times a day, but you would take it two to three hours before or after your antibiotic. Of course.
Okay, and I guess my last question, Do women have a unique gut health need?
Yeah, women have a unique, what I'm calling a microbiome. It's actually called micro-gender, so they have a unique need for different strains and a different balance of strains when you're looking at a woman's probiotic formula, so for example, research indicates that women need more lack of the silla-lactobacillus acidosis, so you're gonna look for a formula that has a little bit higher amounts of elects bacillus asides, you're also really gonna look for strains that are gonna help with women's health, women's vaginal health, women's vaginal ecosystem is unique, and there are certain strains like lactobacillus, Jensen, lactobacillus gari, those are critical key probiotics for overall women's vaginal health to help with yeast balance, BPH balance, help with your pathogen, so you really wanna look for tried N-true research proven strains that are naturally Korean women's vaginal system, like again, lack of signs and I and Gary to help with within women's formula. Well, this is very interesting, great information, and thank you so much for your time, Jordan, some great advice, and we really appreciate your knowledge and we look forward to having you on again, but in the meantime, you can get more information on Jordan and the website is genuine health dot com, we look forward to your next passion, etcetera.
