Hello, I'm Kimberly King, and welcome to the mother's market radio show, a show dedicated to the Truth, Beauty and Goodness of the human condition. On today's show, essential oils are one of the more popular ways to heal ourselves the natural way, so listen closely and find out how you can get started and learn how to use them safely and efficiently.
Plus later. We'll tell you what's going on around town. But first up, Amy Perera is a national educator for preterm, the only 100% organic eco search certified essential oil company in the country. Amy is also a certified holistic nutrition consultant and registered yoga teacher, and has served many roles within the natural foods industry over the past 20 years, and we welcome her to the mother's market radio show. How are you?
I'm doing great. Thanks, Kim.
Thanks. And why don't you fill our audience in a little bit on your mission and your work before we get to today's show topic... Absolutely, well, my backgrounds in environmental science, so for me, I really want to do everything I can to stand behind sustainability, both in my family and in my work world.
Wonderful. Today we are talking about aroma therapy, and so Amy, who is prone prone, is a company that was founded in Europe in 1991, and it was started by a third generation pharmacist Dominic Bau, and his mission was to not use his pharmaceutical background for medications, but to really study the beneficial components of plants and to bring scientific aroma therapy to the public.
Nice.
What does that mean? The word printer, so Panorama is actually a combination of two words, prana, which you may have heard from yoga class, which means breath of life or life force, and a Rome represents aroma therapy or the aromatic compounds that are in plants, and so putting those two words together prone really represents how the aromatic compounds in plants can affect our life force or our spirit.
Thank you for explaining that. I was wondering, how did that word come about, what sets program products apart from other aroma therapy companies, as you mentioned that the initial... At the start of the program, prodromus the only 100% certified organic and Eco-search line of essential oil, hydrosol, Virgin plant oil and even essential oil products that are designed for supplemental internal use in the US when it comes to essential oils in aromatherapy. Why is organic important? It's so critical, and a few reasons because when the plants produce essential oils, they make these constituents for their own immune system purposes, the plants make essential oils to fight off bacteria, pests, viruses and other threats to their well-being. And so when the plants are sprayed with pesticides, fungicides and so on, the synthetic chemicals, they in a sense do the job for the plant, and then the plant does not express the same degree quantity and quality of essential oil constituents, so it's really important that the plants aren't sprayed so that they grow on their own and they express these essential oil components that we want to harness for human immune health.
What is eco-search certification?
Eco-SERT is... You can think of it like the USDA organic, but much more powerful in that it's an organization, it's the largest organic certifying body in the country or... No, sorry. In the world.
So it's a global organic certification program, it's recognized in over 80 or even 100 countries now, so it is far more vast, encompassing and even stringent than USDA organic, so we have always on the labels, use organic but also eco-search, so there's those layers of protection, it ensures that there's no GMO components, never any GMO seeds used, never any synthetic additives chemicals, adulterous, and that we also know every single chemical constituent within those plants, essential oils, because they've all been tested for such and so on all of your products. We would definitely see that label for... Yes, you'll always see eco-SART as well as USDA Organic on every product.
Right.
Can you tell us a little bit more about chemo typing? I've never heard of that. Yeah, so that's what I was mentioning in that we understand the chemical components or constituents in each and every essential oil, it's because the gas chromatography, mass spectrometry has been done, so there's these intricate machines and testing methods in place for every single batch of... As such oil, so that through those testing methods, we can identify how much Lina law, how much neural acetate, how percentages-wise of chemicals are in each and every batch.
So that's really important because when you're using essential oils, you may want a higher amount of one type of constituents, for instance, Rose, Mary Rose Marines efficient, Allis is one plant genus and species that plant grown in different regions may express different types of chemicals, and if it has more Senna, it may be more stimulating and better for respiratory health, if it's got more urban one, it may be better for skin care, so it's really important to know the chemical constituents within those plants so that you can use them accordingly. And then also when we blend our formulas, our wellness plans, we know which ones that we're using, so that we can really tailor best the formulas to the specific needs within your company, what... Can you tell me a little bit about your product line?
Sure, we have hydrosol, which are a co-product of the distillation process, we have the essential oils that are obtained through distillation, so just so you know how essential oils are created, a large, large amount of plant material is put into a still with water. The water is boiled, the steam rises up through the plant sort of opens the pores and allows the easily evaporating volatile molecules to travel within the steam, eventually the steam and the essential oil gases condense back into a liquid form, the water is denser than the essential oil so the water sinks, the essential oils rise, the essential oils are removed and sold in little bottles and the liquid component with all the water cable properties is sold as a hydrosol, and so those are two of our products. We also have the virgin plant oils, so the organic Bergen plant oils, those are from the first cold pressings of the nuts, fruits and oily seeds of a plant, so they're often known as carrier oils, but they are really righteous on their own as well, offering many different properties, and then new to the line relatively are the prana caps, which are encapsulated essential oils in a carrier oil and edible carrier oil, so they're already properly diluted 15 drops of essential oil per capsule designed to be used internally safely, and then there's one other new to this show is the aroma force line, and that's designed for the immune system support and respiratory health, so there's some past deals, there's an immune defense solution which you can diffuse or apply to the body as a chest rub or the interest soles of the feet, bronchial syrup and then also a throat spray.
Wow, how long does that whole process take when you're distilling this and when you... Oh, that's a great question. So it varies with each plant, some plant material needs to be lightly dried, some needs to be fully dried, some needs to be distilled directly, freshly picked from the field, and then beyond just that drying or fresh process, there are certain quantities of time that are involved in distilling the essential oils and some plant material like Frank in Census, even immersed in the liquid, so it varies with each essential oil or with each plant material, and is there a difference between organic and therapeutic grade products? That's another really great question. So you'll see therapeutic on many, many labels in the natural product world, but therapeutic is really just a marketing term, now, I myself use the term therapeutic because what it really do notes is that that product will impart a benefit to the human body, and that's wonderful, but as far as a label standpoint, there's no governmental regulation on that term, so it can be used very loosely, it's just a marketing term that implies that it's going to support human health. Organic is very different, organic is, as we mentioned before, going to guarantee there's no gmos or synthetic ingredients that it's been grown in a very specific way, and it's the certified organic and certified eco-SERT really... You know what's in that product? If it's just therapeutic, it doesn't guarantee organic at all, therapeutic does not guarantee that it's been chemo typed or tested, and that's a real big difference, and you wanna make sure you look for that labeling on there when it's right, whether you're using the products on your skin, or in some cases internally, like scientific aromatherapy is not just about a pretty fragrance, it's about using essential oils to impart that therapeutic effect, so you're using them either on the skin in some cases, directly, in some cases diluted, but it's a massive amount of plant material condensed into a small amount of essential oils, for instance, if those 50 or so roses are distilled and they create a single drop, so it's about 50 roses to make A Drop of a senile, if there's chemical residues on those non-organic roses and you condense that plant material and potentially those pesticides into that drop and you're putting it on your skin or even in your body, like scientific aroma therapy uses essential oils internally, then you really run the risk of potential toxicity on in your home, in your body and so on.
Do you mention roses? What would roses be used for?
Yeah, Saros essential oil, the rose auto is very uplifting. It's often used in skin care products, it's in our Rose regenerative facial oil, I love the feel sense it's quite costly because of the large amount of roses that are required to make just a small amount of oil, about 15 million roses to make a cup... Oh my gosh.
Well, it's incredible. So I don't think most people can imagine or envision what a million and a half roses look like, so about that 50 or so to drop... Right. Oh my goodness, what do you use for your immune... For a year, what kind of plans do you use for them... For the immune system, so many people will use a Regina or time... You can even use Eucalyptus. It's sometimes interesting when you hear an essential oil training, the educator, even myself, I'll say, Oh, this one's got anti-microbial properties, and I'll say that about every single oil I'm talking about, and it's not that I can't think of anything else to say is that this is the immune system of the plant, and this is what these components do, so they support our immune system in a variety of different ways, can I use the essential oils straight from the bottle or directly right on to the skin, in some cases, you can use them straight from the bottle, lavender is one essential oil that has classically been used neatly, which is another word for directly on the skin, it's safe for burns. In fact, it was originally really brought to the attention or brought to light that it was so beneficial for injuries and burns, when a French chemist got Fuse was in his lab, he had a chemical burn, he used the... Here had a burn from a challenge in the lab, he used the pure lavender essential oil on his skin and was astounded at the recovery rate, the minimization of scarring and how it actually improved the sensation of pain very, very quickly, so that spurred much more research about lavender essential oil for its use directly neatly on the skin, but there are others that you wouldn't want to put on your skin like a Regina, and Regina is very valuable for the immune system, like we just mentioned, but it can be a bit concerning, some people will think, Oh, I'll put it in my water, essential oils are hydrophobic, so they shy away from water, they're lipophilic, so they're drawn into the fats within the body, so if you put a drop or two in your water and then drink it, that essential oil may not bypass any tissue of the mouth or esophagus, it will be absorbed there, and that can cause burns. I've had people tell me that they couldn't taste for about a week, or that the esophagus was very uncomfortable and swallowing was difficult, so it's really important to know which ones need to be diluted and which ones can be used neatly when you foray into eventual essential oil use, but that's where the product caps come in, in that the Regina is already diluted in an encapsulated form... SA for internal use, right? Well, this is very interesting information, and right now we're gonna take a quick break, but more in just a moment... Don't go away. We will be right back.
And now, back to our interview with Frontera, national educator, Amy Perera, and we're talking about aroma therapy, and it smells so good in here. By the way, it does. Can I use essential oils internally?
So yes and no, some you may... Some, you absolutely may not.
So it's really best if you are going to use them internally to work with a certified aroma therapist or be sure that you're seeking an essential oil that you know is adjustable, like an organic lemon essential oil.
A lot of people will use organic essential oil of peppermint, and that can also be used internally in many cases, but that's not necessarily a wise choice for someone with reflux GERD, so it's really important not just a venture into those waters without having a good solid knowledge or background, there are some other ways to perhaps and just essential oils a little bit more safely, and I gave an example that we have the pronotum prodi caps, those are essential oils diluted in a carrier oil, adjustable and organic essential oil. Organic carrier oil encapsulated designed for safe internal ingestion.
Right, you did mention that.
Yeah, so there's a couple of offerings there, there's the digester Rome for digestive support, excuse me, the aroma stress, which is for stress in Munsee immune support and an Regina capsule, and that's a real big one because people are interested in using a Regina oil internally, but that's one of those ones, like I mentioned, that can cause some real challenges, it's nice to know that when you're internally ingesting your essential oils, they are properly diluted and that they are not going to incur any challenges in the gastrointestinal tract, especially in the upper throat, esophagus and so on, what about children, is it safe to use essential oils for kids, so if you're talking older children, you have a little bit more liberty for babies, I generally tell folks to be really mindful if they are going to use something on a baby, maybe just stick with lavender or chamomile. And so even when you're using lavender on a baby, make sure it's organic 10% certified organic, their skin is so delicate and precious, so that's really not an area to make a concession, the essential oil should be diluted as well, and you could do a 05% dilution or even a 1% dilution. So a 1% would be using one drop of essential oil per hundred drops of carrier oil, so just choose a carrier oil like calendula or something that's safer baby skin, you know your baby won't react to it or it's already been used maybe for diaper care, and then just that one drop per hundred jobs, or even you could do one drop of a since oil per 200 drops of carrier oil for a more diluted version, and it's always good to even patch test too. When you're talking about kids, that's a good point. And what about pets? That's a great question to... Essential oils are not suggested for cats, you may use some essential oils for dogs, a lot of folks when they are pets, when their dogs have hotspots or it she pause or maybe some challenges there that they just keep kind of looking and irritating. They would give them a little lavender foot bath, and that can help calm and soothe the skin, it can be used for burns, like I mentioned earlier, but dogs are liquors, and so though, if you put it on and just leave them to run around, they may leak that off. So I would just say put a little bit on and then maybe cover your hand or give them a treat to distraction, to distract them, so that really the essential oils can absorb and do their magic cutout for Stressed Out dog, you know that... Yeah, so the Lavender can also be helpful.
Another thing though, that's good to know is that the hydro-souls get more of a green light with pets, so that's that co-product of the distillation, that's the water that... It's not fair to say left over because it's beautiful and it contains the water-soluble constituents of plants, but that the water-soluble constituents in the hydrosol can also be used, so you could use some lavender, lavender hydrosol to help clean a wound or sue the pet's irritated spot, but again, not cats, as much as dogs, the hydrosol are fine for cats, but cats are really sensitive, so just kinda look at their body language as to... Yeah, what is the best use of essential oils?
That's a big question. Probably some of the most popular uses be in the diffuser nowadays, almost every home of my friends and family has a diffuser, but with scientific aromatherapy, essential oils have been used for skin care, stress response, helping to calm the central nervous system.
So skin care is a big one in the diffuser for stress or for immune support, also folks will use them internally for digestive care, a lot of times pregnant women under their practitioner's care will make an inhaler stick with ginger or some peppermint essential oil in it, and inhale, if they're feeling a little nauseous, so there's really an endless amount of ways that you can use essential oils, and then there's also putting them and carry our oils and blending them, and that just increases the amount of ways you can use them also.
And what are the differences or the similarities between essential oils and Virgin plant oil? Yeah, so a lot of times people look at the carrier oils and they think that essential oils and carrier oils are the same thing, but the virgin plant oils are from the first cold pressing of the nuts, fruits or Oily seeds of a plant. So you can think of a flax seeds in taking the flax and pressing the flax, it produces oil, that would be a virgin plant oil.
There's a variety of different version plant oils out there, you can have avocado, you may see borage Evening Primrose to mono. So the virgin plant oils are from the pressing of the nuts, fruits and seeds of plants, whereas essential oils are produced through harvesting various parts of the plants, it could be the flower, it could be the stem, it could be the leaves, the park, the roots, but taking those plant materials and putting them into a still with water and then according to each different plan using different methods to produce the essential oil, so the essential oils are really 10, 10 or 20 chains of carbon molecules, and the Virgin plant or is more essential fatty acid rich, they contain omega 3, 6-9 and so on.
We've talked a little bit about lavender, but why is lavender so popular besides... It smells so good.
Yeah, it smells amazing. It's got some calming soothing properties, it's often used for baby and safe in that way, it has been seen in research to help calm the central nervous system, and it's great for burns, it's great for bug bites, it's great for the patches, so lavender is really like a panacea, another way that it's used in Europe is as a carrier for other essential oils, so this is really interesting, in some cases, you might wanna use a Regina on the skin, but we talked about earlier that you can't apply it neatly or directly to the skin, it may cause irritation with the situation where you might wanna use a Regina, then you think, Okay, so it needs to be in a carrier oil, but maybe if someone's using it for a fungal infection, the Regina directly to that infection is not suggested, so then putting it in a carrier oil may not be a great choice either, the carrier oil may lock in the heat and the moisture and fungi are known to grow in moist dark environments, ways to damped or environments.
So in that case, you could use lavender as a carrier, so applying a Regina oil into lavender oil and then putting that blend onto the skin, so there's so many different ways to use lav and term, that's really why it's one of the most popular essential oils. Well, what are some of the other popular items in the oils that you have... Yeah, so as far as essential oils, but prone room, we have the single notes, which would be like a little bottle of lavender or a bottle of Clary Sage or a bottle of bergamot or someone and so forth. There's also wellness blends that we have, and so the wellness plans are expertly blended and designed for specific purposes, we have skin clarity planned, there's the sleep aid, there's the good Samaritan, which is sort of a play on words of some of the other essential oils that you might see out there that are used for immune support, there's history about the thieves in Europe were stealing from those during times of Bubonic playing, and some of those themes were wrapping their face in an essential oil, DAST Keri, and then going around and robbing from the dead or ill, but they weren't becoming ill themselves, and so the reason was the essential oils were offering their antimicrobial properties. When we inhale an essential oil, it can make contact with the tissue directly of the sinuses, it can be brought further into the lungs and getting into the body in that route, so that is a form of internal ingestion in a sense, it is brought into the body through inhalation, and they really took the advantage or took advantage of the plants, microbial antimicrobial abilities by inhalation to keep them well, so the good Samaritan is 100% organic blend of essential oils that support the immune system, it can be used in the diffuser, it can be used to make hand sanitizer, you can even put the Good Samaritan in some baking soda and sprinkle it around the carpet for not only improving the smell or odor of the room, but also offering those antimicrobial benefits to the carpets, and maybe if you have pets and you have some fleas or pests, it may be very helpful in that manner, so that's another really popular formula. We are finding that the immune defense solution, which we've just recently launched, is doing amazingly well in the US, but it's really one of Europe's best-selling formulas, and that's another really popular formula that contains a few species of eucalyptus, it contains peppermint clove Rosemary. It's designed to support the immune system and respiratory systems, and you can use it in the diffuser, were on the chest as a chest, rubber on the soles of the feet or the interests to absorb into the tissue in that way.
So it's very, very versatile, it can be used for children six years and up, it can even be diluted into a carrier oil and then apply to the skin, so that's another really popular one, some of the singles that are popular are, of course, lavender recovered that Clary Sage is another one that's quite popular, and what I really like about that one, as I've seen some research that discuss, that discusses that when patients were going in for medical procedures and the patients were very anxious, they were given a variety of different essential oils. lavender was one, Clary Sage was another.
Clary Sage was actually seen to decrease the stress response in those patients, even a bit better than lavender, so you can make a beautiful blend of lavender and clary sage and put that in your diffuser just to keep stress at bay, but we also have a beautiful stress recovery Formula contains sweet Margo, which is known as a ervine, helping to calm the central nervous system, bergamot and other ascent a rose Eran, um, and other essential oils that are very uplifting and soothing all in one.
Wow, well, this has been very interesting.
Thank you so much for your time.
Thank you.
