Hello, I'm Kimberly King, and welcome to the mother's market radio show, a show dedicated to the Truth, Beauty and Goodness of the human condition. On today's show, did you know that each of us has cannabinoid receptors in our body? It's one of the reasons he has become one of the hottest topics in the natural foods industry, learn all about why you should be considered a hemp supplement, plus later... We'll tell you what's going on around town. But first up, Joel and Jessie Stanley are from the mission-based Stanley Brothers botanicals. They are the creators of the Charlotte's Web, a pioneering line of hemp oil extract products manufactured by Cwm. Cwm makes high quality hemp extract botanical formulations designed to improve quality of life.
CW Hemp made its mark with Charlotte's Web Hemp extract named for young Charlotte G. her remarkable story was first featured by cnn's Dr. Sanjay Gupta and has since garnered global attention, and we welcome them to the mother's market radio show. How are you doing? Great, thanks for having us.
Thank you, Kim, thank you. Why don't you fill our audience in a little bit on your mission and your work before we get to today's show topic... Yeah, so the Stanley brothers, there's actually seven of us back in Colorado, we're all in the hemp industry together, we had started back in about 2008, 2009, and we were focused on the medicinal benefits of the cannabis plant and various forms, and in 2012, something really interesting, shook our world, we met a little girl named Charlotte, and at the time she was having 30400 violent grand Malton, a clonic seizures, just kind of the worst seizures you can imagine, she had a rare form of intractable epilepsy, and she had been through every pharmaceutical option that there was... And her parents were very intelligent people, page and Matt Biggie, they had been scouring the internet to find out if there was anything that might help their daughter, and they found this little known molecule that comes from the hemp plant, it's a non-psychoactive molecule called cannabis. We abbreviated CBD, and now it's a big craze and kind of a hot item out there in the world, but this is where it comes from, they had found that there was research going back decades that may be this CBD from the cannabis plant... From the hemp plant, could help Charlotte.
So they approached us and they had actually had their neurologist, their doctors on board said, Hey, it's worth a try, we've tried everything else.
We agreed to make a basically a tincture that is now known as Charlotte web for Charlotte success. I'm happy to report that Charlotte now today is thriving where she was in a wheelchair, she was basically catatonic, she wasn't eating then a feeding tube tube, now she's walking, talking and even enjoys her first day of school. Yeah, just fairly recently, and that's not an isolated incident, so we named the product Charlotte for Charlotte success, and since then, we've found that the CBD itself, this product that itself has helped people with just general health and wellness. And I think we'll get into that. We'll talk a little bit about why this is such a good product just for general health, not just for cases like Charlotte.
Wow, that's incredible.
Just a quick question, how Charlotte was held when you first... She was fine.
Yeah, Charlie was five. This is 2012, and she was five years old. So if you can imagine, it was a little bit nerve-racking, creating kind of a controversial extract for a five-year-old, it was already kind of end of life, so in first AFSC... Ooo, congratulations.
So today, we were talking about the benefits of hemp, and we're joined obviously by Joel and Jessie Stanley, and we were talking about Charlotte web hemp extract. And what does it do, what is it?
So CBD can... Abadi is a non-psychoactive, non-intoxicating molecule that's found in the cannabis plant because it's not psychoactive, we can actually derive it from hemp, and not a lot of people understand him, but the controversial term marijuana is cannabis cannabis to the scientific name of the plant, but the non-psychoactive side of the plant that makes clothing rope and now dietary supplements and food is hemp.
So that's where CBD comes from, that's where it's derived from, and it works within our bodies on a little known system that all of us have... All mammals have a system called the endocannabinoid system, it was actually only discovered in 1994, but molecules like CBD and other cannabinoids found within the cannabis plant helped to bring that system in our bodies into balance, that's kind of the general way that cannabinoid therapies and supplements work what is Charlotte's Web Hemp extract? And what does it do and why should everybody know about it?
Charlotte Web is a whole plant hemp extract, it's rich in the compound we've been talking about known as CBD, and it's basically a dietary supplement that's very good for our health, and I think everyone should know about it simply because it's another tool in the arsenal to create... General health and wellness. I'm a question for you, just going back that... How are you interested? How did you know about Charlotte? Just going back, just for the general public, well, our origin story and really starts in the medical marijuana or World, because before him was legal to cultivate here in the United States. That's really the only way that we could help people. Specifically in Colorado, we started in about 2008, and how we got into that specifically was the recession, very similar to the other people in the industry, happened to leave other jobs, I know Joe was in the oil industry down in Texas, and I was as well, and Joel had done lot of Research on Cannabinoids, which is what CBD is, Canada, dial being cannabinoid, and how effective they could be to fight certain... In a lot of different illnesses. And that's really how we got into it.
Back then, it was sort of the way West, and then him became legal, like Doha saying, and we were able to take our genetics from the plants we were using to the field and blow this up in a more, I guess, dietary supplement sort of way, because the CBD is non-psychotropic, and it is generally recognized as safe, we are able to grow for... Take it from a number of plants to acres, we had at the time, I think a 15000 person waiting list, but this we could not ship back then, so taking it to the funding community is really what changed for us and that happened in 2014.Okay, thank you. How does Charlotte's Web work with the ECS?
So the endocannabinoid system is a series of receptors throughout our bodies, almost every cell in our body has a cannabinoid receptor, and this was just discovered in 1994, so there's not a whole lot known about the endocannabinoid system other than... It's very important, it's kind of the regulator of the regulators in that every major system in our body interfaces with the endocannabinoid system, and the reason why these vital cannabinoids, like CBD, are very important for us as a tool for our health, is that they kind of represent a key where are our cannabinoid receptors throughout our body are kind of like a lock, and different cannabinoids from the cannabis plant can go in and up regulate or down-regulate and basically bring balance to that entire endocannabinoid system, which that impacts other systems throughout the body.
This is something that's being widely researched now, but it's still... What we know about it today is severely lacking, we're just at the tip of the iceberg.
What will know in 10 years is that that's why this is a very exciting time. We know we have a tool that is helping for a Marriott of reasons to feel generally better and sometimes in very severe cases, really drastically helping people, and all that we know about it is that we're basically modulating one of the most important systems and largest systems in our bodies, the endocannabinoid system, your product is highly focused on stress and balance, and that's a huge problem for people these days, so... How is CBD helping? Well, I think that the answer is a little bit in the question itself, it's the word balance, it's homeostasis, like Jesse was talking about, because the endocannabinoid system is such a prolific system in our bodies, when we give it this tool to bring balance to it, that can help folks with their everyday stresses and another reason, number two, that's actually reported as sleep, so people are reporting that they're sleeping much better after using Charlotte Wade, Charlotte's Web being used in any other medical studies right now, our organization has engaged multiple universities, both here in the US and abroad, and we're looking at researching various cannabinoid formulations, mostly CBD for lots of different purposes, and right now, we're engaged in some pre-clinical research and also a lot of observational research, so what that means is, is that there are lots of post... Tens of thousands of people using Charlotte's Web. And so we've asked them to work with us in an observational research registry, so that we can record and get data about why they're using how effective it is for various things, and I'm actually proud to say that that observational research is actually written and recorded by Johns Hopkins University.
So the research is happening, but keep in mind, this is a very new phenomena and there's much more research to be done, and like I said, what we know about it now is only scratch on the surface, so we're very excited for these next few years of research so can you talk about what patent the United States has filed on the CBD? Yeah, absolutely. So when talking about the medical side of it, the reason why more research needs to be done is actually the United States government has a patent on cannabis as a neuro... Protect an anti-oxidant. Those right there alone, when you're talking about everyday stresses or why this plan needs to get more research and why we're involved with groups like Johns Hopkins and some of the other universities around there to better answer some of these questions... Well, this is very interesting information, and right now we need to take a quick break, but more in just a moment, don't go away. We will be right back. If you've ever enjoyed the delicious food inside our kitchen, you may have tried this tasty dish, now you can make it yourself, this recipe is for non-dairy rice putting... And now back to our interview with Joel and Jesse Stanley from the mission-based Stanley Brothers botanicals, and we were talking about the benefits of hemp.
Gentleman, there are seven Stanley brothers that work together and that's incredible. You're talking about the family. They're a really 11 of you though. Altogether, right?
Yeah, absolutely.
We all start with the letter G, So it goes just in Joel, Jesse, John Jordan, Jaro, Justin, Julie and Jensen.Range from 4, sill be 43, and Jensen will be 21. in which I was saying is, it makes me feel really old.
But yeah, so we come from a family with a single mom, my dad left when the youngest was born shortly after, and I think that's why we're so close. I know that's why we're so close, so it's sort of the pack mentality, we had to pull it together, and mom worked four jobs to make everything work and obviously, I wouldn't change anything about, that's why family and the dynamics in our company are so strong and we treat everybody at any organization that we have as family, so... Congratulations to your mom.
No.
Oh yeah, she's amazing. She'd be sitting here. She's the best.
Yeah, clapping from back there, 'cause she's such a fan of ours, it's a blessing to have somebody like that in your corner... I love that.
Well, you're on the right show at mother's market right up.
You say your product is more than just CBD, but what does that mean?
Well, so CBD as an isolated molecule is, you know, a topic of interest right now, there are lots of products out there that tout CBD and just CBD, but one of the things we believe about plant nutrition in general, but certainly the hemp plant and all of its wonderful cannabinoids is that they serve us better when they're in the whole plant form, it's not only that, we believe that there's actually lots of research that suggests that which... There was actually a term that was coined by rail Mitchum, he was the researcher out of Israel that first isolated and synthesized both THC and CBD, but he coined the term entourage effect because his research showed that CBD alone as an isolated molecule did not work the same and in many cases, was ineffective, where CBD paired back with all of the other phytochemicals from a whole plant extract is much more effective and just act completely differently within our bodies on the endocannabinoid system when it's paired with the plant terpenes and other final cannabinoids, which going back to the science and the research of this, there's over 100 different compounds in the HM plant, so you take all of those, like we were talking about, CBD, CBD, CBD, all of these different final compounds growing chlorophyll, terpenes and flavonoids, things that give it smell and the taste, and that's why you throw all those together, you create something very powerful, but also something very difficult to research, because they like to know from a research perspective why it's working well, those different ratios of those 100 different compounds... I don't know, I'm not really great ratios and how many different ways and mechanisms there might be in 100 different compounds, but a lot... So it take a long time, which is why people should be sourcing or looking for a full spectrum or full whole extract, and that's interesting too, because obviously it's working or it's starting to... And you're starting to see the results on that.
What should people look for when buying a CBD product?
I think right now, because the industry is so young, there are a lot of players getting into it right now and lots of brands popping up, I think it's really quality and what quality... What I mean by quality is also consistency, so because it's a new industry, you don't have a lot of brands that necessarily control all of their raw material supply, and it's very important, just as we were talking about, why do we say more than CBD because that whole plant is very important.
Well, it's also very important that you use the same plant genetics in a product every time, so when someone goes to buy something like Charlotte's Web today, and they buy one bats today, if it's working for them or helping them when they come back in a few months, to the store, they need to be able to buy that exact same product, and unfortunately, not all of the products out there follow that quality and consistency mandate, how is patient or customer voices, how does that fuel the hemp health movement? Your feedback. Yeah, I think in general, there's a movement going on in the world where people are looking to treat their bodies in a much more responsible and healthy way, they're getting away from going after pharmaceuticals to treat things, they would rather go after something natural, something that's organic something that benefits their body more than it destroys, so as it relates to treating every day stresses, because we live the world where... I don't know how long it takes to get home on the five or the 45, but I would imagine that creates a lot of stress, so everybody deals with this and they want better options, they feel like they've been lied to by the medical community, and so healthcare is really becoming self-care, so we get a lot of feedback from our customers that This product works for is just how we've saved their life from just reducing the amount of pharmaceuticals that they had to take or that they relied on from a sleep perspective to alone if we can help in any way to get people off of products like Ambien, which are destroying people's sleep cycles, and from that aspect, we're very blessed to get the customer feedback that we do get, and are you getting that feedback through social media, how are you getting that feedback, you know the CBD phenomenon, it came from stories like Charlotte and there are... Now that we live in a world with the World Wide Web and Social Media, nothing can really be kept a secret anymore, and so everyone who is being helped by whether it's Charlotte's Web or another CBD product, they're generally out there talking about it. Some of these folks are helped so much that they're shouting it from the social media rooftops, and so I think that the voices of the actual consumer for CBD products are really loud, and that's the reason for the phenomenon.
What is your hope for the future of Shalini?
Think it's probably different for both of us, but mine is to show through research over the time, all the things that we can and can't say about about CBD and really educate... Have Charlotte by the leader in education and a leader in this industry and pioneering away for a better future. I think that's perfect. I think we just... Charlotte's Web helps tens of thousands of families right now, and it's our hope to see that turn into tens of millions, and I think that what we're dealing with here with CBD, we actually have such a valuable tool that as awareness grows about it, I think we're actually going to see Charlotte web helping tens of millions. That's our future goal.
Well, this has been very interesting, thank you so much for your time and some great advice, and we really appreciate your knowledge and we look forward to having you on again then in the meantime, for those that wanna get more information on the Stanley brothers, check out the website, it's Cwm dot com.
