Hello, I'm Kimberly King, and welcome to the mother's market radio show. I show dedicated to the Truth, Beauty and Goodness of the human condition. On today's show, we welcome back nutritional expert, Valerie Hall to talk about joint health, she'll tell us what supplements can help us improve the way our bones and joints feel... You don't wanna miss this one.
Plus later, we'll give you another great mother's recipe and also a way to save some money at mother's market, but first stuff, as we get older, our bodies take a little longer to get going in as the pain seems to last a little longer.
Well, so today, we've invited back nutritional ist, Valerie Hall, Valerie appears in front of thousands of people each year, and she speaks on a variety of topics, and this week she's gonna tell us what we can do to ease that pain and feel better as we age and we welcome her back to the mother's market rating the show. Valerie, how are you?
I'm doing great, generally. Thanks for having me back. It's great to see you again. And thanks for being here. Tell us a little bit about your work before we all get to our topic on joint hell, I do seminars all across the country for health concern individuals, and I also do seminars for health practitioners and things like that to help educate them on how to better help their patients, and I love to spread that word of good health, so I do about 20 different topics, and I love the topic we're gonna talk about today of healthy joints, because healthy joints are just one of the things that I think people really suffer from in this country, a lot of joint issues are happening as we get older, and there are so many things we can do to help ourselves rebuild, to help bring down inflammation and some better foods we can choose as well.
Well, I love that as well. And yeah, do you know what... We're not getting younger. Are we Dandridge are getting water and you're here to help us with it, that so many of us seem to develop the joint pain over the years, so why is that?
Well, that could be a variety of reasons. There are a lot of foods in our food supply that are very inflammatory and degenerative, Food is never neutral, it's either working for us or against us, and the ones that are really working against us work against us in every way, they're bad for our immune system, they're bad for our skin, they make painful joints, they unbalance our blood sugar, they cause us to gain weight, they make our brains fall apart, so here are the bad guys that are doing all that stuff, and that really contribute to joint inflammation, they include sugar, corn syrup high fructose corn syrup, all of those sweeteners are very degenerative, they make our bodies fall apart faster than we can rebuild ourselves.
Next thing is grain. Now, a little bit of whole grain is good for us, but larger amounts of flower products are not... Flower is just the same as sugar to your body, so that piece of bread, if it doesn't have very much fiber in it, is also a degenerative pain-producing food, the artificial sweeteners like they as per Tam sucrose and Saharan are also pain-producing foods in the body they create inflammation, so those are problematic as well, and then things like the artificial fasts-hydrogenated oil, partially hydrogenated oil and totally hydrogenated oils, and even deep fried food are all very pro-inflammatory, we do a lot of things in the body with the fats that we eat, and some of them increase inflammation and then the good fats help to bring inflammation down, so you've got a lot of good anti-inflammatory oils out there too, but the ones that are hydrogenated and the ones that are deep fried food, very, very difficult for pain-producing kind of foods, they're also building very poor quality cell membranes, and so our cellular health really suffers when we eat these kind of negative fats out there, so those I think are the foods, soda pop is a huge producer of pain in the joints, and surprisingly, today's process milk might also be a big problem. What a shock that is, and we all were taught to think that milk is such a healthy food, and if it's coming right out of the cow and the cows grazing on organic grass and... Yes, I think that that's fine for us and give us a lot of benefits, but once it's pasteurized homogenized, the cows are getting hormones and antibiotics, it's not a natural food anymore, so my favorite milk substitute is un-sweetened almond milk, I think that's a good substitute for milk, a lot of healthy eating just means finding a healthy substitute for things we already like, and wonderful health food stores like mother's market do a great job of supplying great quality food that is gonna be much healthier for our whole body process, we need the nutrients in our food to give us what we need to rebuild our joints or muscles, our skin, our bones are enzymes and neurotransmitters and hormones, all of that gets produced from the food that we eat, so the better quality of raw material that's going in our mouth, the better all of our manufacturing processes can work.
Wow, well, that's a... Okay, I love that. And not necessarily what you're gonna find in the fast food that... And not even regular commercial rose stores these days, a lot of stuff is just processed to the point that's not benefiting us anymore, well, which foods can help the joints. I know you just kind of touched on that a little bit, but I Tayloe vegetables as an excellent supporter for joints, vegetables are really the way we should be getting our minerals, and so vegetables are great, always go organic when possible, you're gonna get a much better quality of food that way. And then the other thing that's gonna be great for our joints are the good fats, the omega-3 essential fatty acids, which we're gonna get from fish flax seed, some of the newer ones on the market are like Hemp Seed chose and solace. All kinds of new, interesting omega-3s out there. All the omega-3s bring inflammation down in the body, other good fats would include olive oil, the fats in seeds and nuts and avocados, all of those contain beneficial anti-inflammatory fats for the body, and even surprisingly, coconut oil for years, we were told that was one of the worst things we could eat, and the one they tested many years ago was hydrogenated coconut oil, which is why it came out as the worst thing we could eat, now they sell organic virgin coconut oil in the health food stores, and it's a wonderful beneficial oil for us, it's also good to rub directly on the skin, so it's got some wonderful properties, so the good thoughts are gonna be inflammatory vegetables with all of their fiber are gonna be anti-inflammatory, the more fiber and water we get in those pull toxins out and help to decrease pain in the body as well, and then if we're gonna eat grain products, they should be whole organic sprouted grains, not huge quantities of grains like we were taught to eat with that 60 to 11 servings, I think one or two servings of whole grain a day is plenty for us. So unless we're very physically active, if you run marathons, you can handle more than that, but for most of us, one to two small servings of grain a day is good, but we want that to be whole organic, proud, agreed. With lots of fiber in it as well, so those are some of the best things instead of soda pop, which is very degenerative and pain-producing, use a little flavored Stevia, the natural sweetener, and they've got flavored drops at mother's market that are delicious, and you can put a few drops of that in a bubbly mineral water and make a much healthy or soda, so there's always a healthier substitute for things that we already like that are gonna have a much better effect in the body and certainly a lot with food.
So if we get those pro-inflammatory foods out and anti-inflammatory foods, and we can make a huge impact right there with how much we're paying... We're feeling in the body.
What about supplements that can help with rebuilding the joint structures?
There are some fantastic supplements, and they work on a variety of different pathways, so... Let's talk about those. The one that most people know about is glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM, that was very popular, made popular in the 90s, and in fact, doctor's best vitamins who's sponsoring our show here was the very first company to combine those three nutrients in a joint product in the 1990s, so they've been cutting and science-based for a long time, glucosamine actually helps to build our connective tissue structures, things like tendons and ligaments and everything that holds our joints together, the chondroitin helps to pull water into the cartilage, so when dried out... Cartilage is part of the problem, and the chondroitin is very helpful.
MSM is a natural self or compound that we use in about 300 different functions in the body, and MSM is an anti-inflammatory nutrient and it's also a re-builder of collagen, so very good.
So together these three nutrients, the glucosamine, contrite and MSM make a wonderful benefit for the joints, now, it can take a little while for that to be felt, for the benefits to be felt because we're really working on rebuilding here, so be patient with these nutrients and get a very high quality one, like the one by doctor's best vitamins, best Acosta mine, chondroitin and MSM, you're gonna get up to the proper levels of these nutrients according to the directions on the bottle, I've known as some companies are making their product look cheaper by not recommending the correct amounts, and you're not gonna get the right results if you're not taking the right amounts, so very important there to get that one in.
So that's one of my favorites.
Another wonderful anti-inflammatory thing, since I mentioned it just a moment ago, that MSM, you could buy a separate bottle of MSM and add more of that to your joint protocol, the correct amount of MSM to really get good relief from pain is a 1000 milligrams for every 60 pounds of body weight that someone carries, and that's the amount per dose, so most people need two, three, 4000 milligrams of MSM at a time, and then they start to cross that pain threshold and feel a lot better, so get up to a higher amount of MSM. It's also one of the least expensive of all of the anti-inflammatory supplements, so very good for that reason as well.
So those are some of the top ones that I would recommend. There are some other great things that we can use for our joints also, the herb turmeric contains an active component called curcumin, and curcumin is a spectacular anti-inflammatory, most people notice a wonderful reduction of pain when they start to get a really good quality curcumin in doctors best has one called Best curcumin featuring her human C3 complex, which is a brand name of curcumin that actual human studies have been done on, really shows a great decrease of pain and inflammation, and it also is excellent for protecting the body from damage, from anti... From free radicals, and it can also be protective against chemical and radiation exposure, so I like curcumin has a lot of protective qualities and can be a very good decrease of pain and inflammation in the joints and the rest of the body. Another excellent joint product is hyaluronic acid is is one of my favorite things, 'cause it also helps to decrease wrinkles... What a lovely Sidebottom.
Absolutely has a... Women were like, Yeah, no.Joints and skin, we love that. So hyaluronic acid actually helps to pull a cushion of water in between the joint structures, so it's our Kushner for people who have grinding and popping in the joints, low cartilage, no cartilage, degenerating discs in the back. Anyone who needs a cushion in the joints, I'd recommend adding that Hilti acid into the protocol, very good for that. It also contains some collagen and some control in sulfate, so it helps to pull water into the cartilage as well and re-build those college in structures for skin, it pumps up wrinkles in fact, the wrinkle-ing process involves the losing of hyaluronic acid in collagen and for the joints, Hilario acid is pulling that water in, and it's also the smooth slippery that our joints glide across, so love that. Hyaluronic acid for skin and for joints, it's one of my top recommendations, the one by doctor's best is called Best hyaluronic acid, so it's an excellent one that they have there at mother's market. Just two a day. It can be done with or without food, and you take it with a big glass of water so that you have some water to pull into the system.
Absolutely, that's absolutely great information. As usual.
Absolutely, and I have one more for you.
It's called Best Sarah peptide by doctor's best. This is an enzyme that helps with clean, heal and repair in the body, so it helps to clean out gun when it's depositing in those joints, it helps to free up range of motion, it's an enzyme that you take on an empty stomach and it goes looking for problem proteins in the body, things that are foreign proteins or damaged proteins that need to be cleaned up, so any little cell that has a marker on it that says, Get me out of here, I need to be cleaned up. That's what Sara PEP days is looking for.
So taking on an empty stomach, this is a dramatic anti-inflammatory enzyme really helps to bring down pain and inflammation, but I love it 'cause it gets to the root cause of the problem by cleaning up the gunk that's depositing in there and really helping to free up range of motion, it eats up scar tissue, internal and external, and it's just a fantastic one for joint pain, I have found... I first started using this, oh gosh, almost 10 years ago, or when I had frozen shoulder, and it really helped me to... In my physical therapy, I was able to move my hand another foot and a half of the wall within two days of taking this wonderful enzyme, so it really helped me tremendously right away, helped to un-stick things. It's great, the oirat.
Yeah, exactly, it's like I wrote a little PAC-Man for the body that's gonna eat up the problem Bukit is also great for loans and sinuses and helps to dry up excess mucus and open up the breathing passage ways, it's excellent for abnormal little growths that are involved with problem proteins, things like cysts and polyps and nodules and fibroids and things of that nature, so I love the area pipes for so many things. It's got immune benefits. Joint benefits, pain benefits, great for swelling and inflammation, so if you have, whether it's a long-standing joint problem or a sudden injury or maybe even recovery from surgery where you've got inflammation and swelling... I love this era, pet days, and it's the top thing I recommend for people who get repetitive motion injuries because it brings down the inflammation, pain and swelling.
Wow, great, I love it. Okay. Again, a wealth of information. Miss Valerie, thank you.
You're welcome.
We're gonna need to take a quick break. We will be right back with more from Valerie, stay with us, and welcome back to the mother's market radio show, and now we wanna take the time to remind you that if you missed any portion of today's show, you can always download the podcast from our website, mother's market dot com, and then click the link for the radio podcast, listen to our past shows, much, you can always download our Healthy Recipes and money savings coupons, all available at mother's market dot-com. And now, back to our interview with nutritional consultant Valerie Hall, we're talking about joint health and what we can do to control it as we age, tell us, Valerie, all about... You've been talking about so many interesting things, but also about this aging process, controlling our joint, just the joints as we age are the best things that we can do as we get older.
Well, all of these supplements have been talking about operating on different pathways, so as we get older, and some of the things that I'm doing to help prevent joint problems, actually I had a couple of joint problems a few years ago, one was an old ski injury in the knee, and the other one was an old car accident in Ryan, the other need... So we have some joint pain maybe 15 years ago that was starting to build up, but with these great supplements, that's all gone in my body, and so part of what I'm doing now is preventative kind of maintenance to help keep things going strong.
So as we get older, whether we have problems or not, I think that the re-builders like The glucosamine can join an MSM are very important, that's our foundation, building blocks for regenerating new joint tissue right there. So that's a re-builder. The next thing I would recommend as we're getting older is that wonderful cushion or the hyaluronic acid that we talked about, the best high lariat helps to pull that nice cushion in there so that things aren't grinding together in the joints.
Another thing that's influencing our joint problems is if we are aging with increased body weight, that puts more wear and tear on our joints, so the more we can do to keep our weight under control, and that really happens when we start reducing the amounts of... Not only sugars, but starches in our diet and getting over to vegetables instead, that really helps our weight, and it also helps inflammation because again, those foods were inflammatory, so we wanna be paying attention to our food supply and get the anti-inflammatory foods in and avoid those inflammatory things like the Sugar flower and hydrogenated oils, and then if there are larger amounts of inflammation going, the Curcumin would be a great thing to add as well, and then we talked about the Sarah peptide for healing from injuries or helping to clean out the gunk, if there were things that are kind of stuck in the joints, that kind of thing, so depending on what's going on, I would recommend this variety of nutrients, but I think the key ones are gonna be your glucosamine, can drown MSM and your hyaluronic acid for aging joints. I think those make a very big difference in terms of the way we feel... Okay, let's talk a little bit about a common rumor, and that is about rebuilding the cartilage. Is that true? That you cannot rebuild that... You know, I certainly can see why a lot of people and a lot of doctors think that you can't rebuild cartilage, because if your cartilage is degenerating and you nothing different than it's going to continue to degenerate, you cannot rebuild it. But the truth is, we rebuild every tissue in our body on a very regular basis, cartilage and bone are some of the slower growing things in the body, so they do take longer than some of the surface things like skin, which reproduces fairly quickly, but we do replace every cell in the body every seven years, so we are rebuilding ourselves even such difficult issues as cartilage, but if you don't make any changes in your diet or your supplementation, I can certainly see why people think that you cannot make any inroads there, but if you do make those changes. I've seen people make great inroads in benefiting their cartilage and other joint tissue production, so the things like your glucosamine can join MSM, very good for rebuilding those joint structures, your wonderful things like collagen or silica, also our good builders of the joint tissues, if you eat collage and it builds collagen.
So doctors best has an excellent collagen, types 1 and 3 that comes in both tablets and it also comes in powder, which doesn't taste like much of anything, so it's easy to put in a smoothie or a drink, so Collagen, when we eat that, and particularly these types of one and three are found together in the body because they support each other, so they're often found linked together the one and three, they are the primary college and building blocks of bone and of joints and cardiovascular tissue, and also the eyes and things like that.
And skin, those are some of the main types of collagen, collagen type 2 is mainly what is building cartilage, so Collagen Type 2 is the type of collagen that's found in that high Aaronic asset combinations together. One, two, and three should do a really good job of giving your body the nutrients it needs to start rebuilding cartilage and joint tissue very well, and also bone, I really recommend collagen for bone health as well, because the interior bone is 70% collagen. People think of bone is just this hard mineral, 100% calcium, but it's not that at all, there are 17 different minerals, but they only comprise about 30% a bone, they're just like the outer shell and what gets the inner flexibility, and in fact, what helps to knit broken bones together really well is collagen, so very good, another good support nutrient for the joints and for the bones would be collagen.
What are the best recommendations for injury recovery... For injury recovery, you wanna do a couple of things, my top recommendation is gonna be that Sarah PEP taste, so Sarah PEP TAs will help to accelerate that healing process very nicely by cleaning up the damaged tissue, which in turn helps it to replace with healthy tissue faster that's a miracle.
At my miracle enzyme, Sarah PIP days at doctor's best, they call me Miss Sara PEP as 2010.So I love this stuff, I take it every day. I think it's just spectacular, and I've seen it help so many patients in my practice as well, with a variety of different issues and that actually... What age recommendations would you recommend on that as everybody needs enzymes, even children need enzymes, so if they're dealing with some specific health challenges or an injury, then absolutely. There's not gonna be anything in an enzyme that's going to be harmful to them, in fact, all of these supplements I've talked about today would be perfectly acceptable, even for children, most supplements are aimed at about a 150-pound person, so if you have someone who weighs much more or less, you can adjust doses up and down with that serpents that we talked about, that's my top thing for healing kind of things, and then I would recommend the collagen to take along with that, the college is gonna knit everything back together, it the bones and the joint structures and the skin back together, and the SARA PEP date is going to be bringing down inflammation and swelling, it's going to be helping to prevent the scar tissue formation, it's going to be helping to accelerate the healing process, so those would be my favorite things for recovery from an injury at any age, I think those would be excellent strategies to help with that.
Okay, fabulous.
Again, great, great recommendations, and again, you are just always a wealth of information, you just say, Go Valerie. And you answer every question. Thank you.
