You don't wanna miss this.
Plus later, we'll give you another great mother's recipe and also a way to save some money at mother's market, but first up, you are what you eat and what you could control what you think about, joining us as nutritional consultant and certified natural health professional. Valerie Hall gallery appears in front of thousands of people each year and speaks on a variety of topics, this week, she's gonna tell us that what we eat directly affects our brain function, and we welcome her to the mother's market radio show. Valerie, how are you? I'm doing wonderful. Kimberly, how about you?
I'm fine things, I'm so excited about this topic because there is just a myriad of things that we could talk about, so I wanna thank you again for being here and tell us a little bit about your work for those that don't know, before we get all of our brain power increased.
Well, I'm so thrilled that I get to share the word of good health all across the country now, so I speak coast-to coast. I have my website, Valerie Hall nutrition, which has DVDS available. I just love to share it, what I've learned over the last 15 years, and brain health is something we can do so much to support through nutrition and through various supplements, people don't realize that the foods they're eating have a huge impact on the way they feel and their ability to think, it's very dependent on nutrition, you know what I love about you is your passion, and you make it... We all are gonna be worried about what we're eating here, so today we're talking about the brain and how we can eat again, directly it affects the brain function, so this is fascinating.
So I wanna know, Valerie, the kind of foods that influence what and how our brain works very good, the bad guys. I think the worst thing for our brain are the negative fast, because our brain is built of 60% fat, so every type of oil or lipid or fat that we eat is going right up to our brain, we're all fat heads and we never knew.
Is the kind of oils we eat, so when we're eating the hydrogenated oil, partially hydrogenated oil, trans-fat and deep pride food builds very poor sale membranes, they don't communicate well with each other, they don't allow the right nutrients in or the right waste products out, and that is really our foundation of health, is our cellular health in the body, and the brain is just completely made up of all those membranes, and so many neurons, trillions of neurons, these neurons are little ends of these nerves, if you will, that transmit information throughout the brain, they are the things that the neurotransmitters attach to and transmit the information, so we can do a lot of things to influence those as well, and you talk about negative fats and of course, things like French fries and you use that hydrogenated oil, so... I know they're so good to taste, but they're so bad for us, is there a way to have those kind of good food, but do something that I'm in bad foods, but I... Absolutely, absolutely. A lot of healthy eating just means finding a healthy substitute for something you already love, so instead of French fries that are done in a big commercial deep fat fryer where the time and heat has made the oil go, ran it in 30 hours.
Most restaurants change those once a week, so for the vast majority of the time everything we get this put in a deep fat fryer is Friday and toxic oil, so we can do that at home in a pan, there's nothing inherently wrong with fried food, as long as it's done well, use a healthy oil, so if it's a short cooking time, olive oil at a little bit of organic butter in there, it's gonna taste great, or you can use coconut oil for longer heating times. Natural organic coconut is wonderful for us. It's not like that old hydrogenated coconut oil they tested years ago and told us it was the worst thing we could eat, but if you're gonna go for a long time, it's a really nice one, and you can even get the ones with neutral taste, so if you don't like the coconut flavor, so you can have that set as well, that sounds intriguing. That coconut oil and they have to hear, it's good for you.
It is good. And the other thing is for salt, get away from regular salt and use S salt, preferably the Himalayan sea salt is the best of all, but sea salt is far superior for our bodies than regular salt, so everybody should be using that in their kitchens.
A good tip.
Okay, and we're talking about everybody, I'm gonna talk about people of all ages because they do have brain issues, unfortunately of all ages, and I don't know how can we support kids in school... Well, we can do a lot of things to... Again, in the food supply, flour and sugar and corn syrup products are depressing foods, there's a book called The Sugar blues that talks about how these foods lead to depression, they really... Things that over-stimulate those brain chemicals only to let them fall afterwards, and that's what caffeine and sugar can do to us, so too much of those really interfere with our brain chemistry, soda pop interferes with our brain chemistry, the artificial sweeteners are a disaster for the body, I'm gonna be right up front, I'm not taking that back, I'm standing behind that or they are completely toxic to the body, sugar is better for us than the artificial sweeteners, but you can get a natural sweetener called stevia at the health food stores, and that's my favorite by far, I love the flavor of the flavored, Stevia drops taste great, just use a couple of drops and add one drop at a time until you arrive at the correct sweetness, it is much sweeter than sugar, so don't use too much real taste better. But you can use that as a sweetener in your sparkling mineral water to make a soda, you can use it in your plane yogurt with berries, you could use it in your oatmeal, you could use it in your coffee or tea, and you can bake with it, they even have cookbooks for stevia at the health food stores as well.
Very nice. So there's always a healthier substitute, green tea and water are gonna be wonderful beverages for the brain, we wanna avoid too much of the caffeine and coffee, you can have a little bit, but too much of that if you're drinking six cups a day, it's gonna be a drain, I know because I was addicted at one time, I didn't drink six cups a day, do you drink any coffee hours at a... Eaten years ago. Oh, my coffee, I drink the... Usually a little black tea in the morning at a teen the afternoon, and then her team came melt at night.
Okay, so let's talk about... And that might be right, where the next question is about elderly people and so many elderly folks who are developing Alzheimer's and other kind of brain cognitive issues, what can we do for our parents... There are lots of things we can do, both as protectors and as nutrients that will help to fuel brain function, so some of my favorite protectors for the brain so that we don't develop these problems, none of us want to fall into dementia and Alzheimer's, and we don't wanna develop these things. Two of the most protective nutrients for the brain, one is the Omega-3 fish oils, and omega 3 fish oil has different components to it than flax oil.
Fish is made up of EPA and DHA. Our brain is actually 25% DHS. It's exactly what our brain is built out of, when I was little, I remember my mother telling me fish was good brain food. She was so right.
So if you can eat fish regularly, now there's some issues with fish out there, smaller fish collect looks less toxins than larger fish, cold water fish is better than warm water fish, and don't do the farm fish because they get subjected to the same bad farming practices. ocean fish tends to be less polluted than stream and river fish, so I want my ocean fish, smaller fish, cold deep water, and that's gonna be an excellent quality fish, if you like sardines and anchovies, those are good, salmon is always a wonderful choice, so we wanna get some good quality fish in for us, by the way, if you have good minerals in your system, you're much more resistant to absorbing the negative ones, so getting a multiple mineral in on a regular basis is a wonderful strategy so that you don't absorb more minerals that your body is looking for, Okay, that's when he's a bad mineral, it says a, Hi, I need minerals, I'll take it. But if you've got the mineral that helps resist it, then it won't be absorbed nearly as much... Absolutely. And are there any... Let's see those that Entente fish oil.
Yes, the DHA in the university study, thank you for getting me back on to... That's okay, had more I can tell.
I don't wanna miss out on anything. Perfect, so the DH and the fish oil in the university studies show that it prevents the formation of the protein plaque in the brain that leads to Alzheimer's, and then another great preventative for deterioration in the brain is from the herb... Turmeric, turmeric itself is great if you'd like to incorporate that spice and you're eating... If you like curry dishes, by all means, have more of those, if you don't get a lot of Turok in your diet, you can get that in supplement form, you can also get a concentrated one called curcumin, and curcumin are the active components out of turmeric.
So in India, where they have a billion and a half people, they have almost no Alzheimer's at all, and that's the protective of the Curcumin in the turmeric curcumin crosses the blood-brain barrier and stabilizes the cell membranes, so it protects against damage and deterioration. Even if people are already going down a path that's difficult, they can slow down the progression of the brain deterioration by taking tumor or permanent, you said you can't get that as a supplement, as a supplement for good... I like the one by doctor's best vitamins they use a trademark on called curcumin C3 complex, which is what 90% of the Curcumin research in the world is done on very good quality.
Do you have a recommendation for... You were talking a little bit earlier about the multiple minerals in a supplement for... Yes, and I like my minerals in what they call ionic, which means their liquid and they're floating their little atoms floating in water, a wonderful company that's available in many of the health food stores called IDA-e-idea, and they have a multiple mineral that's very good that I love taste, doesn't taste like much of anything, so it's easy to put in the family's water drug, so that they're getting good minerals, whenever we do reverse osmosis in our homes, we're taking all the minerals out, so adding some is a great idea.
Oh, that is a good idea. And then for fish oil, there are a lot of different brands, in fact, there was an article that came out a few weeks ago here in Southern California about some of the brands out there that had too high a toxic level in them, so I wanna make sure I recommend the best fish oil out there, which is Nordic Naturals that's available in every health food store, it has a nice fruit essence, so it's never a fishy smell or a fishy burp, you get a lovely strawberry Buren dead or lemon bus, much more plates so important to be so much better.
And they're very well absorbed, they have no toxins and then they're all removed, and so it's cleaner than the US government requires also just got a recommendation as the official of choice from the American pregnancy association, very wonderful for the baby's brain development and for mom's mood after the birth of the baby. Fish oil is outstanding.
Wow, a miracle.
So many, it is a miracle thing, if you ever watch the anti-aging protocols, it's great for brain, it helps both memory and mood, it's wonderful for the heart, it's great for joints, lubricate the joints. Wonderful for skin, moisture is our skin from the inside out, it's an anti-inflammatory oil and building good quality cell walls.
You know what, Valerie, I'm telling you. You are my new BFF. I thank you for all of these tips. This is a girl. The girl talk, I love it. You know what it sounds like. It's a universal thing. You know what? We're gonna be right back in just a moment, but so much information, it's so informative, and Yeah, we can't wait to get back on more information on the brain or from nutritional expert, Valerie Hall. We'll be right back.

And now, back to our interview with nutritional consultant, Valerie Hall, were... You're talking about eating smart and literally how the food we eat affects our brain functions, so let's just keep talking about the changes that we can make in our own diet and lifestyle and to get the results we want, starting with as young as their little kiddos of course, we as moms wanna make sure our kids are eating right... Absolutely, starting off their day with some protein instead of a big carbohydrate meal in the morning is key, because if we're having serial coast in juice in the morning, we can't sit and focus and concentrate 'cause blood sugars all over the place, protein will stabilize. So a little scrambled egg would be great with some fruit or something like that would be an excellent way to start the day, the supplement-wise, there's some wonderful things that we can do to help our kids... Fish oil is good for them as well as for adults. For every age group, fish oil is an excellent supplement, the Nordic Naturals makes a few for children, they've got tiny little strawberry pellets called Children's DHA, or they have it in a liquid that would be appropriate for preschool kids, if they are in elementary school, I would say get the DHA by Nordic Naturals, and that's a slightly larger pill, but still pretty small and strawberry flavor is easy to take, very good for them. One, if they're five to seven, two or three as they get up closer to middle school age, and that would be a good one to stick with, or they could go to the very concentrated ultimate Omega, which has that EPA and DHA. DHA helps us with thought, memory, cognition, sociability, EPA helps with mental and emotional stability, so together these help both memory and mood for all age groups. Very, very important. I think that's important for some of my... That's good for everybody now, and then all the benefits with heart and joints and skin and everything else too, and then the next thing I would recommend for them is... And in fact, for everybody who has a memory issue, first thing is the fish oil, second thing is something called PS, which stands for phosphatase Sarin, and that is a nutrient that works right on the neurons, right on the membranes in the brain and help the thoughts to make their connections, it helps the connection of the neurotransmitter with the brain, neuron, so PS is actually in every cell in the body, it's a big part of our cell membranes, the brain needs more of it than anything else, so it's a wonderful nutrient for memory and brain so communication, so that would be another great recommendation, safe for children, great for adults, great for elderly, anybody who's having memory problems, fish oil and Ps are my very top to... And by the way, I'm gonna just interject here, so in the morning when we're scrambling to get out the door and get the kids to school, eggs, fruit, and then we line up a couple of supplements for them to get off on the other way, that would be a great thing for them, absolutely give the little supplements right before they eat and then they'll eat their food, it'll be all so good, if they can't swallow pills, you can get these officials in liquids that are fruit flavor, that tastes pretty good as a little spoon of that before the meal. Most kids like the taste just fine.
Excellent.
Next thing I would recommend is the good bacteria we're supposed to have in our gut called probiotics are... But it's not Aeolus. Yes, the yogurt commercials have made us very aware of how important those are, they're important not only for digestion and immune system, but also brain and skin are some of the big things that those impact so many children, in fact, I would say virtually all children are exposed to antibiotics before school age at this point, some of them, even in the hospital when they're born, those antibiotics wipe out all the good gut bacteria that we're supposed to have, and those are very important for immunity, then we are set up for bad gut bacteria to multiply faster than the good ones, and the bad gut bacteria takes over, and that ends up the kids can't sit still if they've got nothing but bad bacteria running around in their Intestinal Tract, they can't focus or sit still at all, so getting the good guys back in there the ACE Ellis and bites is a wonderful thing. They've got some nice powders, don't buy the children's strengths, children's strengths are weaker, children need trillions of these two, there's no reason to limit the amount of probiotics you're giving them, give them a full adult strength to get those things back in there any time any of us have had antibiotics. It's important to get those probiotics back in, and you said the foods with that would be the yogurt on your key for all the fermented food come Bogota, which is kind of better. I don't think the kids are gonna like that sour crowd. They're not gonna eat that either.
Not my kids, I know that. Sure, no, my kids would not go on the sour crowds yogurt, and the healthiest yogurts are gonna be the kind that you get plain yogurt and fresh berries and a little bit of flavored Stevie drops, so they're not loaded with sugar is a good way to do the younger.
Okay, next thing on my list is magnesium. Magnesium is a calming mineral For Kids, you can get the powders that you mix in water, they're physio resent, they taste good. Magnesium is really good for headaches, if people get chronic headaches for cramping, anything from leg cramps and jumpy legs when you're sleeping at night to menstrual cramps for women, magnesium is wonderful, it's a natural muscle relaxers, it's also a good relax for the brain, it's a calming mineral so if there's any hyperactivity involved, and that's a wonderful one as well, very calming, so it's a magnesium every day is great for all of us, and then if there's a particular amount of hyperactivity going on, there's a very safe nutrient called Sun Thiamine. Son, like the sun and the nine, it comes from green tea leaves and it's a very calming nutrient for the brain, but it doesn't make you drowsy, so many of the callers make you sleepy and they're intended for night-time use or... I was just gonna say this is one that it keeps you alert and focused and ready to do your work, but it takes the stress and calm the brain, so it's a really nice one for both adults with a stressful job or kids who have trouble settling down at school, very nice for the nutrient for them, so those are some of the top things I think we can do for our kids. That will make a big difference. Send their school lunches with them, don't let them eat that school lunch, that's a good... That's a great advice.
Well, the healthy leg should send it with me and that would be another big recommendation, and you know what, what kind of really quickly why we are talking about school lunches because again, lots of moms are listening, what kind of things can you pack in a lunch besides just open better and Jeanie and some chips or something nice, a nice sandwich on the whole grain bread would be good when you get your peanut better get it in a health food store, not the kind in a regular grocery store that's loaded with hydrogenated oil. They've got some nice jams that don't have any corn syrup in them at mothers by nature's hallow, those are really good, and that would be a better peanut butter and jelly, so we could make that healthier even... I use carrot sticks, any kind of fruit or vegetable that they like, let's start there and then slowly expand if they like a little cheese, put some nice cheese and there are some string cheese, things like that, very balancing for them as well.
So those are the kind of things. And then no sweet beverage, sandal water would be better for them, or even just sweet now with adding a little bit of fruit juice to it or a couple of flavored, Stevia drops would be a nice saying that... Nice natural sweetener. We talked about earlier, so those would be some nice things, so if they like a sweet flavored drink, you could make one that is not unhealthy for them by getting a water bottle, putting a couple of drops of their favorite flavor in that.
Let's talk a little bit about such an important subject, and that's Alzheimer's, and what can we do of all ages, and what can we start doing now, you have some great advice with the fish oils and the probiotics, anything that can start to change that process around... Well, once the full-blown Alzheimer's has kicked in, it's hard to reverse, but there are still some support of nutrients that PS I talked about to help them help their cognition, and it all depends also on how far along things are, but we can certainly help with some good nutrients for them, the Curcumin will slow the progression of the problems in the brain, the PS, The fish oil, I think would be some absolute key supports and the Kur human that we mentioned as well, and those were excellent. Okay, and let's talk about moods, mood, I'm very protective of my mood, I'm naturally in a good mood, but I don't allow negative things in, I pursue that, which makes me happy in life. I love to go dancing, I try to do that a few times a month. I love to teach about nutrition, so I've developed a whole new career there, that's why doing what you love, that's a great thing, but I don't watch the news every night, I don't go see sad movies. I want to make sure if if there are people in my life that are just always negative, I don't spend a lot of time with them, I kind of shorten the time that I spend with them and things like that, and then there's some wonderful supplements.
Most people have heard of St. John's wort, and that's a very good one for mild to moderate depression, I heard a couple of things good and bad about that is it's very good and the study show it works as well as many of the medications or better. So it's a very nice one. I like the liquid ones by herb farm that you'll find in all the health food stores, and that's a very nice nutrient for mood, other good ones. For the mood El trip to fan is now being allowed back on the market, and that's an essential amino acid that we desperately need, it's the only one that makes serotonin in our brain, which is our major field Gooch neurotransmitter, it also hopes to make melatonin, so it's very important for sleep.
So sleep and mood, so I take one of those at night, sleep really well, and then feel great when I wake up, so leaves you feeling refreshed and ready to go, and you've been making that serotonin all night long, and so that's just great.
Are there foods that also mothers, milk and Turkey are very high in tripped to fan, and many of the proteins have a little bit of trip to fan, but not enough to really make a lot. So the supplement form you can get in 500 milligram, doctors best makes a nice one called tryptophan, every single batch is checked for purity, so that's a really nice one for mood, there's a nutrient called same Sammy is one of those nutrients that we should be making in our body, but a lot of people don't do it well, and it helps a lot of people with mood, mood can be felt right away on the same... So at least 400 milligrams a day, up to 1600 milligrams a day of people are really down in the dumps, that's a very good mood booster, so that one can be very helpful.
So there are variety of things that we can use to help our mood, and those are some of the best ones out there, also the probiotics, again, are very associated with the brain, so if we have nothing but bad gut bacteria where our mood isn't very good, there either. So that's another real helpful one, I like that, 'cause some of these have multiple... They can help in many ways.
Absolutely.
Kind of with the mood goes stress and... And all of this.
So what else? As for day-time stress, I love that sun thing because it allows you to be focused at work, but it really takes the edge off, something doesn't work as well if you take it after you're already stressed out, it doesn't work retroactively very well. Take the sun the in first thing in the morning, and then it helps to decrease the stress and is good for mental calmness, but it really helps with attention and focus all day long, chamomile tea at night is great and maybe even if you have a lot of day-time stress, cup of cammell TA might be good, avoiding caffeine caffeine, aggravate stress sugar aggravates stress, so avoiding those foods would be very helpful as well, the fish oil. Great for all aspects of brains of fish oil. I consider the key foundation for any brain issue you're talking about, always fish oil, and then adding some of these other things for specific other reasons is fantastic.
I did a seminar on brain health in Arizona last year, and when I came back through, an elderly gentleman came up to me and he says, I just had to come by and give you our testimonial.
My wife and I were here a few months ago, and she is 80% better with her mood and her tension and stress, he said, I have to thank you for giving me my wife back, so I thought that was just so sweet and it's really just a few key nutrients, just watching out for a few key foods and getting the good ones in can make a world of difference in the way that you feel mentally, as well as your ability to think, and that's a great advice and really like anything, you just have to try a little harder. Emmaus, make that a little bit of effort. It's well worth the effort.
Well, thank you so, so very much for your time, Allard. I think my IQ just went up, and I want... I keep saying that. Right.
Well, we really do appreciate your knowledge and we look forward to having you on again in the meantime, you can also get more information on Valerie on her website, which is Valerie Hall nutrition dot com, and learn more about her natural approach to making us all healthier and happier and my dad, we look forward to our next visit, thank you for... Thanks for listening to the mother's market radio show. And for shopping at mother's market.
