Hello, I'm Kimberly King, and welcome to the mother's market radio show, a show dedicated to the Truth, Beauty and Goodness of the human condition. On today's show, we go inside the world of inflammation and the steps we can take to help our body heal itself, plus later will tell you what's new at mother's market and what's going on around town.
But first up, everybody likes feeling their best, and when we get sick... Inflammation can cause a whole host of issues. And today we're gonna talk about ways to deal with it. Here to help us is Dr. Michael Murray, Dr. Murry is one of the leading authorities on natural medicine, he's a graduate faculty member and serves on the board of trustees of vestre University in Seattle. He's authored to almost 30 books, and over the past 20 years, has compiled a massive database of original scientific studies, and we welcome him back to the mother's market radio show, Dr. Mary, how are you?
I'm doing fabulous. It's good to be back on.
Great, well, why don't you fill our audience in a little bit on your mission and work before we get to the show's topic.
Well, I'm committed to helping people improve their health through natural means, and that means a diet, lifestyle attitude, and of course, the proper use of dietary supplements.
Fabulous, I love talking to you about this.
Well, today we'd like to talk about inflammation, and I guess we'd like to start talking to you about what is inflammation and what role does it play in chronic diseases like cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer's... Well, the classic form of inflammation is when we're familiar with if you fall down and scrape your knee, it turns red, it gets hot, you might lose some function and it's painful, those are the classic signs of inflammation, there's another form of inflammation, it's more insidious. We don't really see it, it's a silent inflammation, it's a smoldering type of inflammation, we can do some blood tests to monitor that inflammation, probably the best known is a test known as C-reactive protein or CRP, and this test has been shown to be a more significant indicator of a risk for a heart attack as well as cancer than other markers, including cholesterol levels, so it's a good marker to perform as part of your yearly physical because it tells us how much inflammation is going on in your body and if it is elevated there are things that we can do with diet, with lifestyle, even with attitude as well as dietary supplements to lower that C-reactive protein level.
Well, so in addition to diet and lifestyle, what natural products are helpful in reducing silent information... Well, there's a long list of potential products, fish oils, I think, or something that everybody should be taking a good high quality pharmaceutical grade fish oil. The dosage for general health is about a 1000 milligrams each day of the long chain Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. So it's not a 1000 milligrams of fish oil, it's 1000 milligrams of EPA and DHA.
If someone has a clinical indication for fish oil supplementation such as high triglyceride levels or severe inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, eczema, asthma, or they suffer from depression, attention depths disorder or other psychological issue, they need a higher dosage, typically 3000 milligrams of EPA and DHA beyond fish oil, there are many substances that can lower these markers of inflammation, like C-reactive protein, probably the best is a compound from turmeric, known as curcumin or human is a yellow pigment of tumor Comerica is the main ingredient of curies.
So this compound curcumin is responsible for those yellow colors of cure, and it's also responsible for these medicinal effects of turmeric.
We wanna go back for a second, and you mentioned the C-reactive protein test, is that something you can get in an annual check-up... Absolutely, and it should be part of your screening plan, just like you should rule out high cholesterol and high blood sugar levels, you don't want any of those occurring... A creative protein is a valuable addition to any general check-up... Blood check-up.
Okay, that's interesting.
Is that something you have to ask for specifically?
Many doctors routinely check for C-reactive protein, but with the attempt to reduce healthcare costs, maybe some medical organizations are trying to get doctors not to order it, it is a little bit extra, but it's very important, it gives us valuable information, so it's not part of the regular check-up. You need to ask for it.
What does the research tell us about... Is it curcumin or your human is one of the most thoroughly studied natural products, there have been over 5000 scientific investigations on curcumin in the last decade, most of these studies have focused on test tube studies and the animal studies, but we do have some clinical research on curcumin, and there have been significant improvements in the types of church human products that are on the market in these studies, curcumin has shown remarkable anti-inflammatory actions, it really addresses the key aspects that lead to inflammation, it literally shuts down information by turning off the inflammatory switch inflammation is mediated by a long list of compounds, curcumin is the only substance that's been shown to impact all of these inflammatory mediators, It either reduces the formation or a block the action of every single known inflammatory mediator, so researchers are studying it intensely because to be honest, with you, the drug companies are trying to find an analog that they can patent that is as effective... They haven't been able to find it. curcumin also exert significant anti-cancer effects and significant anti-aging effects, for example, they were looking at population groups in India, and they looked at Alzheimer's disease rates and people who consumed curry on almost a daily basis to those people who never consumed Curry, and they found that in the group that consumed the Curry, there was an 80% reduced risk of developing Alzheimer's Disease, and that led to test tube studies and then animal studies, and now clinical studies looking at her cumans ability to block the development of Alzheimer's Disease... In Alzheimer's disease, one of the hallmark features is the formation of a substance called beta-amyloid, this substance is almost like a scar tissue in the brain, and the scar tissue forms around the nerve fibers and tangles them all up, and that's really the hallmark histological finding an Alzheimer's disease... Well, in these animal studies, animal models of Alzheimer's disease, curcumin was actually shown to unwrap, unravel all of those neuro-fibular tangles, all those tangled nerve cells, and basically restore proper brain structure and function, so researchers were really excited about this, but when they went to prove it in clinical studies, they've found that wasn't so effective, and the reason why is, is that curcumin in general is poorly absorbed in humans, it doesn't get absorbed very well and it's quickly metabolized, so companies have been working to improve the absorption of this molecule, the latest and most advanced form of curcumin is a form called their acumen, and they're actually doing a study at UCLA with their cure men in patients with Alzheimer's disease, and the researchers are very excited because now they have a former human that will allow them to achieve the blood levels and brain levels that match the levels that were shown to be effective in these animal studies, the effect-ness of any drug or any natural product is based upon its ability to deliver an effective dose with curcumin just like many drugs, the effective dose is based upon achieving specific blood targets, and this theremin is the only form that is raising blood levels of curcumin on par with the concentrations that were shown to be so effective in these preliminary studies, so the researchers are ecstatic this, their Carman is produced by taking the curcumin and particle and basically grinding it through it what's called a wet mill process, it's a natural process, basically, you just reduce the particle size, it'd be like If you have sand just making that sand even finer and finer and finer, so the theremin particle size of the Acumen is 100 or more times smaller than regular curcumin, and then you have to quickly code that curcumin particle with the vegetable Gum, they use a gum called gum GAI, so they basically Micro-encapsulate, if you don't do that step, the Curcumin goes back to forming a large clump, a large particle in that makes it poorly absorbed, so there... Carman is an advanced form of curcumin where the particle size is reduced and its micro-encapsulated, the net result is we see absorption rates that are 300 times greater than regular curcumin powder, and it really solves the biggest shortcoming of regular Truman and that his poor absorption over a half dozen studies have been done with their acumen right now, and they're over 18 studies that are in progress, including the study that I mentioned at UCLA in Alzheimer's disease, and the reason why it's becoming so well studied is there's a lot of researchers that love for human, and they finally have a form that's going to produce the clinical results that they've hoped for.
Wow, this is fascinating. I do wanna ask you, we have to take a break, but when we get back, I wanted to ask you on the subject, whether or not these studies are being done on people that obviously that have the Alzheimer's and at some point, what this resulting is... So that you're finding... So we'll talk more about this when we come back after a break. Really interesting, thank you.

And now, back to our interview with Dr. Michael Murray, and we're talking about inflammation and we were just discussing, they're a human, and this is an amazing supplement we're talking about... Right, yeah. curcumin is the yellow pigment of turmeric, it's nature's most powerful anti-inflammatory effect is referred to as a PEO-Tropic molecule, that's an odd term, and I'm sure no one in your audience has ever heard of it, but what it represents is that curcumin has multiple sites of action, and this is much different than many drugs, if we look at an anti-inflammatory drug, whether it's an aspirin or ibuprofen or a newer drug like a seller, Brax, typically, they only impact one inflammatory mediator, one compound that can cause inflammation.
Over 50 different inflammatory mediators have been identified, her human is the only substance it's been shown to act on all of these inflammatory mediators, beyond that, it has additional effects, it has effects in preventing as well as treating cancer, they're actually doing studies with these advanced forms of curcumin at some of the major cancer treatment centers in America, for example, MD Anderson in Houston, there is an ongoing study with this there, Carmen, in patients with advanced cancer, these are people who have been pretty much given up for dead, and the results are absolutely revolutionary. curcumin is the most important natural product as it relates to inflammation and cancer that I know of right now, and I say that based upon the sheer number of studies that have been done and are in process.
So it's really exciting, and I know we were talking about Alzheimer's and during the break where you ask some questions such as, When should someone start it, if someone has a family history of Alzheimer's disease, get on this gene as soon as possible, and as soon as possible I mean, if you're in your teens... He had started on it. Really? Yes, Alzheimer's disease is devastating, and we need to do everything that we can to prevent it, and if you have a family history of it, there's a strong, strong risk for Alzheimer's, so you gotta take those steps in someone who is showing signs of Alzheimer's disease, obviously, you wanna get started with The there Carmen, and when you start it early enough, I think you're gonna see better results in patients who have really advanced forms of all hammers. I'm not sure. We don't know yet.
This study that's being done at UCLA will give us more information in the animal studies, they took animals who were severely affected and they basically helped those rats grow healthy brain cells that they thought was impossible, but again, curcumin has multiple sites of action, and one of the things it does is it actually dissolve those beta-amyloid plaques, Alzheimer's disease is characterized by the formation of these deposits of compound called beta-amyloid, and it causes the nerve cells that become very tangled up. Well, if you dissolve that beta-amyloid, then those nerve cells can re-establish themselves, and the drug companies have been trying to develop drugs, it produce this effect and they've used curcumin as the target molecule, and it's gonna be exciting to see what these results from UCLA are and we should know by the end of the year.
I was just gonna ask you, when we'll each result to come through... Wow, this is really exciting. This is it. It is, I think we're gonna see a lot of really exciting things in health over the next decade, I really believe that there's so many advances that are happening, and most of these advances from my perspective involved utilizing more natural therapies, whether we're talking about cancer, whether we're talking about reversing type 1 diabetes, we're looking at advances that are basically helping the body re-establish its natural state versus taking drugs that suppress the symptoms and in many times make things worse, and when we look at inflammatory conditions and the drugs that are used is really... Counter-productive. Let me give you an example.
The biggest use of aspirin ibuprofen, Celebes, and other anti-inflammatory drugs is in the treatment of osteoarthritis.
This is the most common form of arthritis where the cartilage of the joint starts to degenerate, Carly serves as a shock absorber, a buffer. As It degenerates, you literally get bone rubbing on bone, that's very painful.
Now, what the drugs do is the drugs reduce the formation of inflammatory compounds that cause pain and inflammation, but they also interfere with the body's ability to manufacture cartilage, so their use is a classic example of taking something and actually having a... Promoting the progression of the disease process, people think that they're better because their pain has gone away, but it's a short-term effect, the long-term effect is they're gonna suffer greater joint destruction, and that's one reason why we have over 400000 knee and hip replacements done each year, because people have taken these anti-inflammatory drugs and basically eroded all of their... Carlos, not true healing. If we contrast that to natural anti-inflammatories or compounds from nature that help rebuild cartilage, we see true healing, if you give the body the tools it needs to be healthy, we can see true healing and in the case of osteoarthritis, we can actually see improvements in cartilage manufacturer.
So when we look at inflammation, I think we see clearly that the best approach is utilizing, utilizing lifestyle, utilizing these natural products instead of relying so heavily on these drugs, and that's particularly true when we look at the silent inflammation, many of your listeners are probably have heard of the Mediterranean diet. Well, the Mediterranean diet is one of the most protective diets against cardiovascular disease. How does it do that? Well, it's not so much that you see lower cholesterol levels, that you see lower levels of inflammation, and again, we talked about that C-reactive protein in the first segment, this is a marker that's measured in the blood, it should be part of your normal yearly up if your doctor doesn't put it on the lab panel, you gotta ask for it, but the C reactive protein is a marker for inflammation that is very sensitive to some dietary changes in eating more richly colored fruits and vegetables, using olive oil is your primary oil, taking a high quality fish oil, these are really important steps in lowering that react to protein, we can use a supplement like curcumin, but we should use that as a supplement to a Mediterranean-style diet or even better yet, the traditional Japanese diet, which is also very protective against cardiovascular disease. And most cancers as well, What advantage is their cuman have over curcumin products.
Yeah, one of problems with other human products is that they're poorly absorbed, and this was really demonstrated in studies looking at her humans anti-cancer effects, he had to study at MD. Anderson, and they gave dosages of 12 grams to people, and they saw that the blood levels were really insignificant, many people didn't see any increase in curcumin in their blood was an undetectable, and the average increase was only to about 51 nanograms per ml. That's not very much. We can achieve that same dosage with just one 300 milligram capsule of there, Carmen.
So there, Carmen represents a major advance in curcumin absorbs and it's over 300 times better absorbed than regular curcumin is the most highly bioavailable form of curcumin ever discovered, and it's this improved bioavailability that is exciting, researcher, so much that they are now utilizing... There Carmen, in these clinical studies, because they finally have a natural form of curcumin, it's going to allow them to achieve the same concentrations that they showed were effective in these pre-clinical studies in clinical studies.
I think it's great and you... You've written over 30 books that your latest one, I wanted you to see if we can dive into it a little bit, and then the name of it is what the drug companies won't tell you what your doctor doesn't know.
Yeah, we were talking about anti-inflammatory drugs earlier, and what people don't know about these drugs is they're really harmful if we look at... Just to ask for an ibuprofen, they cause a lot of side effects, over 7000 people die each year from ulcers caused by these drugs... No, Tylenol is not any better. It's a leading cause of the liver failure, and then you have the newer drugs like celebration and Baxter, these drugs are very hard on the heart, and more people have died in America from taking these drugs, and we lost in the Vietnam War, these drugs have killed over 60000 people.
So they're not only not addressing the underlying problem, they're acting as biochemical band-aids, they're actually, in many cases, killing people, and they're just not rational, I'm a big proponent of rational medicine. And what that means is that I don't throw the baby out with the wash. there are indications and use of virtually every drug that's out there, but many of the drugs are completely irrational and end up causing more harm than good, and whether we're talking about sleeping pills, type 2 diabetes medications, high blood pressure medications, high cholesterol medications, that drugs like Faso Max, Bonita Acton, the list goes on and on, and we start looking at the real benefits and contrast that with the risk as well as what can we do through making changes with our diet lifestyle and proper supplementation. We see this completely irrational to be going down the drug path, and for most of these common health conditions, what is it too late to get on the supplement, meaning if someone is in stage for cancer or advanced Alzheimer's, is it too late to get on... You never know. All you can do is all you can do it.
I've seen patients that had very poor prognosis, they were expected to die imminently, and then they've lived years and we've seen miracles, and then I've had patients that, boy, they should do really, really well, and they don't, so all we can do is all we can do, and for me, what that means is getting on a comprehensive approach to health that includes developing a positive mental attitude, making a spiritual connection, eating healthily, engaging in a healthy lifestyle in supporting your body through natural means, which usually includes the proper use of dietary supplements.
So I think that's all you can do is all you can do. And have hope.
So where can we find their... Trueman is available through a number of different manufacturers that are selling their products to health food stores across America, and it's an easy Ely-found natural product, and for more information, people can go to my website, Dr. Murry dot com.
Wonderful, excellent.
Well, this has been fascinating once again, and I love your natural approach and you really care for your patients to be on... Comes across a...
