California Love. Local Farms & Family Producers
With the widest selection of organic produce in Southern California for over 40 years, Mother’s is your organic produce destination. Bringing Orange County and Los Angeles residents the best organic fruits and vegetables does not just happen. Through years of vetting, forming, and maintaining relationships with local farms and family producers, we are able to bring you the best of the best. With summer in mind, we wanted to share one of our amazing partners that supply us, and ultimately you, with them.
This season, Peterson Family Fruit is supplying Mother’s with delicious stone fruits. The Petersons are rooted in their land. Living in the same place for the last four generations, they have no plans of moving. Vern started farming at the age of five. Out in the field, grading cannery peaches beside his father. Everyone in the family pitched in. That’s just how the family farm worked.
Carrying on the 100-year tradition, growing delicious stone fruit is natural to the Petersons. The family farm is located in the heart of the central valley, in a small Swedish town called Kingsburg. Vern grew up working alongside his father in the orchards. Through that season, he learned life-long lessons, working hard and learning from his mistakes. The love of life and a love for people was instilled in Vern by his father—an enduring trait he still reflects to this day. Catch the glimmer in his eye and the wide smile across his face.
Now Vern, along with his son Erik, farm a variety of organic tree fruits including peaches, plums, and nectarines. A family tradition passed on to the next generation. Beyond the work, the Petersons care for their people. Genuine and whole—in all they do. Vern and his family work hard, using organics to enrich the world around them, both in their fruit and through the people. Vern farms a variety of organic tree fruits including peaches, plums, and nectarines. ¬The family also raises organic chickens, using their waste for fertilizer on the farm. A symbiotic relationship that naturally boosts farming operations. Mother’s is proud to partner with Peterson Family Fruit this season!

Summer Grilling Season. Tips for Grilling Corn
Corn is a summer staple and goes perfectly with any of your grilled favorites. You can grill corn in a few different ways, it really comes down to what kind of flavor you want in your corn.
Tip 1: You do not have to remove the husk before you grill.
You do not need to peel the husks off before throwing corn on the grill. Leaving the husk on will steam the inside kernels and keep them juicy and tender. If you do not want to deal with the husk getting too burnt on the grill, it is a good idea to soak the whole cob in water to keep the husk from burning as much.
Tip 2: Try to remove the corn silk as much as you can.
Whether you are keeping the husk on or taking it off completely, removing the silk before you throw it on the grill will eliminate another step when the corn is hot off the grill. To remove the silk and still cook the corn in its husk, peel the husk back and leave it attached. From there remove the silk and then soak.
Tip 3: Don’t be afraid to cook the corn without the husk on the grill.
Grilled corn that has been directly on the grill without the husk will impart some great smoky flavor and create the char flavor everyone loves from the BBQ.
Happy Grilling!
Father’s Day Activity. At-Home Beer Tasting
Are you in the market for a new favorite beer? Do you want to show your friends and family that you have the best taste in beer? Doing an at-home beer tasting can accomplish these and more. Beer tasting is a great way to find out what kind of beer you might enjoy without having to finish the whole bottle or can, or maybe you want to bring a little mystery to your friends and family. It’s easy to come down to your local Mother’s Market and pick out several new beers, and pour out a flight for each person to try out. To find out if you really have the best taste or what everyone’s true opinion is, make it a blind tasting. This way no one will go in with any predisposition to liking a certain kind and will let the beer do the talking! IF you are having a hard time picking out beers for the tasting, here are some recommendations you’re bound to love.
Hop Juice Triple India Pale Ale
This hop monster uses Premium American 2–Row and a touch of light crystal malt to create a solid malt foundation. Five different Hop Varieties are used in the Hop Juice. Now dry hopped with Mosaic for great aroma. Starts out sweet and finishes with the crisp bitterness of a Triple IPA. This drinkable blend will have you hopping till nights end.
Orange County India Pale Ale
A light bodied IPA that goes down easy. We create a slight sweetness and bitterness by adding California grown oranges to the boil. Brewed mainly with Mandarina Bavaria hops from Germany that give off citrus flavors and aromas of tangerine and orange.
Voo Doo American Stout
Voo Doo is a full bodied, dark brew that is rich and malty with plenty of roasted barley character. This hearty stout is layered with flavors of roasted barley, chocolate, and coffee coming from the highest quality imported malts. Its creamy long-lasting head completes the brew, tempting your taste buds to be spellbound.
Asylum Belgian-Style Triple
It has a beautiful golden color. Its relatively light body is deceiving fora beer of its character. It has a sweet and spicy, complex fruity aroma and flavor derived from our distinct Belgian yeast strain. Asylum finishes with a subtle, warming character to help you relax on any night. Asylum is an exceptionally smooth Belgian-style brew. Drinking great beer brings the world together. “Vrede op aarde” (Peace on earth).
Trestles India Pale Ale
Trestles IPA is light bodied, clean and pleasantly hoppy. Simcoe and Centennial hops contribute to its great citrus aroma and flavor. Trestles is a great, easy drinking IPA.
Up Your Water Intake. Water-Packed Produce to Keep You Hydrated
Proper hydration is critical for good health, especially during the summer months when you’re doing outdoor activities in hot weather. While drinking water is always a must, eating foods that contain significant amounts of water can also help you stay hydrated! Here is a list of delicious produce that has a water content of over 90%. Perfect for enjoying while beating the heat!
Watermelon
Watermelon is a summermust, of course. Not only does the flavor pack a punch, but one serving contains over half a cup of water. Since it also contains several important nutrients, such as Vitamin A and Vitamin C, watermelon is the perfect low-calorie snack to enjoy at the park or by the pool!
Strawberries
Strawberries are great for your daily intake of water and fiber. This sweet treat is a great snack alone, or it can make a tasty addition to any summertime salad. Looking for a hydrating healthy dessert? Add some strawberries to your favorite yogurt!
Zucchini
Because of its high water content, zucchini is low in calories, containing 20 calories in 1 cup. Zucchini is full of nutrients and antioxidants that boost your immune system giving you plenty of energy for outdoor activities. Zucchini can be enjoyed as a delicious side dish or as a main dish. We like making zucchini noodles, aka zoodles, and topping them with pasta sauce.
Celery
Celery is another water-rich food. With high levels of Vitamin K and potassium, celery helpswith bone strength and proper muscle function. It is easy to incorporate into your diet, whether the celery is cooked or enjoyed raw with peanut butter or hummus.
Cantaloupe
Having a side of cantaloupe with breakfast is a wonderful way to kick off your day. Cantaloupe is rich in Vitamin A, which can help fight off infection and boost immunity. Plus, the fiber in cataloupe and the water content help you stay feeling full.
Cauliflower
Cauliflower is an excellent vegetable to include in your diet since it is high in nutrients and water. Unlike other produce, cauliflower contains choline, an essential nutrient for brain health. There are so many ways to eat cauliflower. You can steam it or get creative and replace your traditional rice by making cauliflower rice!
Solaray® The Multivitamin Revolution
More than 70% of regular supplement users take a multivitamin.1 But that doesn’t mean it’s always a pleasant practice: Consumers often voice concerns about absorption, or the body’s ability to receive the supplement’s nutrients, as well as stomach discomfort and even unpleasant odors. It’s time for things to change, and Solaray is leading the shift.
Solaray’s new liposomal multivitamins are designed to improve overall user experience and elevate customer confidence—to revolutionize multivitamins for good.
In order to appreciate the quantum leap forward that liposomal multivitamins represent, it’s helpful to first understand what liposomes are and how they work. Liposomes are small bubbles of phospholipids, the same fats that make up all of our cells. On one end, these fats are attracted to water, while on the other, they’re water-repellent. When layered, these opposing forces work together to create an envelope of sorts, which happens to be a highly effective vessel for vitamin and nutrient delivery.2
Liposomal technology isn’t new. Pharmaceutical companies have been using this approach for years to deliver difficult-to-absorb therapeutic drugs to the body. In the supplements world, this system hasn’t been as widespread, since it’s very difficult to make true liposome agents properly.
Immense technical capability and specialized equipment are required to create liposomes that contain their desired ingredients and are the right size. Size is important, because liposomes that are too large are easily targeted and destroyed by the immune system before they can carry out their intended action.3 What’s more, until now, liposomal products have needed to be in a liquid format to maintain their stability, but Solaray’s breakthrough liposomal process is turning this need on its head.
Think of raisins versus grapes. Traditional liposomes are like grapes, plump and full of water. Our novel liposomal encapsulation technology turns those grapes into raisins—in other words, it dehydrates the liposomes, and it does so without the use of heat or chemicals. Why does this matter? Dehydration protects the active ingredients in the liposomes (in this case, vitamins); makes them more stable; and enhances their absorption rates.3† And, it means we’re able to offer liposomal multi-vitamins in convenient capsules. Once in the gut, the liposomes are then rehydrated and can deliver their nutrients to our cells.
Solaray’s new patent-pending liposomal multivitamins are crafted to offer maximum absorption and enhanced bioavailability. They also address the other common concerns of conventional and even food- grown multi-vitamins. Our liposomes are odor-neutral, lab-verified, and gentle-to- digest.

Specialty Cuts. A Guide to First Light Steaks
Mother’s is all about providing top quality meat at the best prices! That’s why we are proud to partner with First Light! First Light is a New Zealand based company that focuses on producing and providing people with delicious non-GMO meat, raised right. Their 100% grass-fed wagyu is succulent, tender, and flavor-packed as well as full of natural marbling and Omega 3. Add the fact that this company is New Zealand’s first meat company to receive a Certified Humane® accreditation, and you know why we love this brand so much.We offer a variety of cuts of meat from First Light and since each is unique in its own way, we’ve detailed some of the key things you need to know about each below.
Manhattan Strip, aka Manhattan Filet
New at Mother’s, the Manhattan Strip Steak has all the flavor of a NY Strip with the cut of a filet. This steak is great for those wanting more flavor than a traditional filet without the excess fat of a NY Strip. While some may have never heard of this steak cut, it is extremely popular at white tablecloth steak houses. If you pick this cut up during your next shopping trip, we recommend cooking it by doing a reverse sear.
Coulotte, aka Picanha
Similar to the NY Strip, but a little less expensive, the Coulotte has an extremely bold flavor! This cut is best to cook on a grillover fire.
Skirt
With a unique texture, First Light’s Skirt Steak is a thin meat that is best for “flash frying” and marinating. It’s thinner than flank steak, but has a bold, rich flavor. For this cut, whether you use a marinade or not, cook it hotand fast.
Flank
Similar to a Skirt Steak, this cut is thin, flavorful, and great for “flash frying” and marinating. However, this one differs in that it is thicker than the skirt steak. Cook it hot and fast, with or without a marinade.
Chuck Roast
Expect amazing marbling with this cut. There are many ways to cook First Light’s Chuck Roast including dicing at home as “kabobs,” slow cooking as “pulled beef,” and braising as a “roast.”
Ribeye
The most flavorful of all the middle meats (Ribeye, NY Strip, Filet), the ribeye provides a unique eating experience with the Ribeye “cap.” To cook this cut, we suggest doing a reverse sear.New York StripWith amazing marbling, the NY Strip is popular! While the flavor of the NY Strip is not as rich as a ribeye, this cut does provide a more consistent eating experience. Prepare this steak on a grill over fire.
Filet
Extremely tender with a milder flavor, the Filet is the leanest of the middle meats. To cook this popular cut, it is best to reverse sear it.
Flat Iron
Second to the Filet in terms of tenderness, the Flat Iron has a thin cut like a Flank Steak with the flavor of a Ribeye or NY Strip. Known as the “Butcher’s Favorite Cut,” First Light recommends cooking this steak by doing a reverse sear.
Top Sirloin
As a very lean cut with a milder flavor, the Top Sirloin is a very “well rounded” steak. This one is also great for grilling over fire.

On this Fourth of July, you can combine all of your favorite red, white, and blue fruits to turn this classic side into a patriotic eyecatcher! Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries are perfect to represent red and blue, while dragon fruit and jicama represent white. If you want to make your salad more fun, try cutting some of your fruit with star-shaped cookie cutters to resemble the stars on the flag! Top it all off with a sweet honey lime dressing!

Embrace Mother Nature. Fun Outdoor Activities to Stay Fit This Summer
With summer just around the corner, it is time to start thinking of new ways to stay fit while enjoying the sun! Not only are there so many fun things to do, but studies show that being outside is a great stress reliever. Plus these activities are a great way to bond with friends or family! If you aren’t sure where to start, here are some suggestions to help you include fitness into your summer plans!
Hiking
Hiking is an easy transition from the treadmill to the outdoors. It is a low-price activity that works for any level of fitness, from a flat boardwalk stroll to a steep mountain trek. Hiking can be tiring, however, the picture-perfect views are an excellent distraction! It burns calories and builds muscle in the legs, especially if you’re walking uphill. So pick your favorite hiking spot, grab some headphones (or a friend) and get those steps in!
Kayaking
Kayaking is an upper body workout that strengthens your back, arms, and shoulders. Southern California offers dozens of kayaking tours for picturesque locations where you can explore nature’s beauty and wildlife. You can either have a calm morning kayaking at sunrise or get a tandem with a buddy and have a fun afternoon together!
Paddleboarding
Paddleboarding burns an average of 350 calories per hour and can help improve your balance. It is a full-body workout strengthening your legs, core, upper body, everything! For beginners, start off kneeling so your center of gravity is closer to the ground. If you want to challenge yourself, test your balance by standing up! Next time you go to a lake or beach, find a paddleboard rental shop and try this workout!
Biking
Next time you and your friends want to grab lunch at a nearby spot, try biking there! Not only is biking great for getting your heart rate up, but it is also an excellent way to save on gas or public transportation! It is a fun activity that improves your cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health while getting you places fast!
Lather on the SPF. Clean Sunscreens to Use this Summer
As you get ready to spend the summer at the beach, by the pool, or anywhere outside, don’t forget the sunscreen! Not only will you prevent burns now, but your skin will also thank you years from now. What you may not know is that not all sunscreens are created equally. Luckily, at Mother’s we have done the hard work for you and have vetted all the brands offered on our shelves to make sure that we provide you with clean sunscreen options. Not sure where to start? Is Drinking Water Enough? Why Use a Hydration Supplement
With the warmer months upon us, now is the time to revisit the importance of hydration. Hydration is crucial for regulating body temperature, keeping joints lubricated and delivering nutrients to cells. Adequate hydration is key for quality sleep, mood, and optimal brain function. Drinking water is essential but is drinking water enough? It turns out that another significant component of hydration is electrolytes. Our blood stream actually uses electrolytes to hold onto the water we consume. Without them, the blood stream essentially becomes diluted. At Mother’s, there are lots of options for helping your hydration optimization. Our customers rave about Liquid IV, which boasts a Cellular Transport Technology (CTT®), and Nuun, which is an easy and convenient way to add electrolytes to your water and even has some flavors that contain some caffeine for an extra boost! See you at the Mother’s Wellness Shop!

Summer Vacation Ready. Tips for Eating Healthy While Traveling
Eating healthy while traveling can be a challenge, especially if there are so many temptations around. Although it’s encouraged to try new foods and relax while traveling, it doesn’t mean you should eliminate your healthy eating habits completely. Here are some tips to help you keep a balanced diet while traveling.
Pack Non-Perishable Snacks Ahead of Time
By packing healthy snacks, you’re prepared for whenever hunger strikes. That way you don’t jump at the first fast-food stand you see. Some examples include snack bars, whole or dried fruit, nut butter, and trail mix.
Stay Hydrated
When traveling, you’re probably going to be doing a lot of walking and waiting. Often our hunger can be confused with thirst so bring a reusable water bottle and fill it up whenever you can!
Consider Splitting Meals
Trying new foods is one of the best parts of traveling! However, the portion sizes at various restaurants can be overwhelming for one person. Try splitting something with a friend or family member! You’ll save calories, and money, and you’ll avoid food waste!
Take Advantage of Mini Fridges
It’s common for hotel rooms to have a mini-fridge, so why not take advantage? Try visiting a local market and purchasing some healthy snacks to store in your hotel room! Purchase some yogurt and fruit and you have a healthy breakfast to start the day right!
Treat Yourself. Frozen Watermelon Margarita
Watermelon is the perfect summertime snack that is full of flavor and is perfect for sunny days. So why not turn it into a beverage for everyone to enjoy? Soak up some sun while enjoying this refreshing watermelon cocktail!
