How Do Blue Light Glasses Work?

June 19, 2025

If you’re like most people, you probably spend a big portion of your day staring at a computer, smartphone, tablet or TV. Studies show that the average American adult spends 11 hours a day staring at a screen of some sort. This is especially true of Americans aged 60 and older, who now spend more than half of their leisure time each day consuming on-screen content.

Naturally, this raises a few questions for those concerned about their health. Can too much screen time cause long-term health and vision issues? We still don’t know the full scope of how all this time will affect our overall health and wellness, but we do know that it can lead to eye strain and sleep problems.

Do your eyes feel sore, tired and dry after a long day of working on the computer or reading on your tablet?  Experts say that viewing angles, glare, and light emission from screens can cause more eye strain and eye problems than traditional reading. The primary reason for this is that screens emit blue light, a form of high-energy visible (HEV) light that penetrates the eye deeper than other forms of light to illuminate the screen.

When you’re working, reading or watching videos, this blue light projects outward and penetrates the eye. Peepers blue light glasses work by filtering out some of the wavelengths and stopping them from reaching your eyes. Many also feature special coatings to reduce glare and lessen contrast, which may help reduce eye strain. How this is achieved depends on the glasses brand and the technologies used in the lenses.

It’s not reasonable or realistic to banish screens from your life altogether. A great way to help minimize the damage is to wear blue light filtering glasses when consuming digital content on a computer, smartphone or tablet. Offering a wide variety of trend-forward blue light filtering glasses and readers, Peepers allows you to elevate your everyday style while protecting your eyes from harmful blue light.
