Flavonoids are phenolic substances widely found in fruits and vegetables, and are known to have a role in the reduction of oxidative stress. One important flavonoid is Quercetin, a yellow plant pigment, classified more specifically as a flavonol. Quercetin is present in apples, onions, grapes, berries, cherries, broccoli, and citrus fruits.

Quercetin is a versatile free radical fighter known to protect against tissue injury from environmental toxins.* Free radicals are generated as part of normal cellular metabolism, used as immune cell ‘weaponry’, and produced from exposure to environmental toxins. Quercetin supports our bodies’ resiliency to outside immune and environmental stressors. As part of this process, quercetin works to remove damaged cells and tissues; a normal bodily function.*

Quercetin also supports healthy seasonal immune system function.* Laboratory studies have demonstrated that quercetin also supports seasonal comfort by promoting normal respiratory function through its effects on histamine.*

One study on healthy male nonprofessional athletes showed a significant reduction in CRP, a measure of acute response to biological stress, when given 500 mg Quercetin daily. However, another study in women with an established joint condition showed that quercetin did not affect CRP. These findings suggest that quercetin supports short-term aches and pains due to normal exertion, but not prolonged conditions.*

Bromelain, an enzyme from pineapples, also has a long history of use by herbalists and is known to help support a balanced immune system response to environmental challenges when taken between meals (without protein).*

NOW’s Quercetin with Bromelain offers this complementary combination that may promote year-round respiratory health and support overall seasonal comfort.*
