Letter from the ceo

Dear Friends,

As we approach the holiday season, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the moments that brought

us joy and the people who’ve made those moments special. At Mother’s Market, we’re not just

about great food—we’re about creating experiences that bring us all a little closer. This year, let’s

embrace the opportunity to slow down, cook with intention, and savor the joy that comes with

every shared meal.

This year, we’re making holiday prep easier than ever with our Thanksgiving reservations. You can

order everything you need, from traditional turkeys, delicious sides, and pies to vegan specialties—

all prepared with the same quality you expect from Mother’s.

For those cozy, at-home holiday meals, our Mother’s brand proteins offer exceptional quality.

Whether it’s our grass-fed wagyu beef, organic chicken, or sustainable salmon, you can create

hearty dishes that bring warmth to your table.

And don’t forget to celebrate in style! We’re thrilled to introduce our new line of special reserve

wines, crafted in collaboration with Wilson Creek Winery. These premium wines are the perfect

addition to any holiday party or New Year’s Eve celebration, bringing a touch of elegance to your

gatherings.

One of the things I look forward to most is the tradition of baking with my family. There’s nothing

quite like the smell of fresh cookies or the creativity that goes into decorating gingerbread houses.

Whether it’s your first time trying your hand at holiday baking or you’re a seasoned pro, I hope

you take the time to enjoy the process—and the delicious results!

As we enter this festive season, I want to take a moment to say thank you. Thank you for letting

us be part of your lives, your traditions, and your celebrations.

With gratitude and warmest wishes,

Dorothy Carlow

Seasonal Organic Produce: What to enjoy in fall and winter As the weather cools and the leaves change, our plates should change, too. Seasonal eating is a great way to enjoy fresh, nutrient-rich produce that aligns with the rhythms of nature. Opting for organic produce adds another layer of health benefits, supporting sustainable farming practices that are kinder to the planet. Let’s explore which organic fruits and vegetables shine brightest during the fall and winter months. Fall Organic Produce: A Harvest of Rich Flavors Fall is a season of abundance, with a wide variety of organic produce coming into its peak. The cooler temperatures create ideal conditions for hearty vegetables and crisp fruits that are perfect for warming dishes and autumnal feasts. Squash: Butternut, acorn, and delicata squash come into season in the fall. These hearty vegetables are excellent for roasting, soups, and stews, providing a comforting sweetness and vibrant color. Pears: Pears reach their peak flavor in the fall, and organic options offer a delectable, honeyed sweetness. Try them poached, baked, or sliced over a salad with nuts and cheese. Apples: Nothing says fall like a freshly picked apple. Organic varieties are free from synthetic pesticides, allowing you to enjoy this sweet, juicy fruit at its best. Use them in pies, crisps, or simply enjoy them fresh 8| Organic Living Magazine Sweet Potatoes: With their rich, earthy flavor, organic sweet potatoes are a versatile staple for fall. Roast them, mash them, or use them in casseroles to add a burst of nutrition and flavor to your meals. Brussels Sprouts: These tiny cabbages thrive in the cooler fall weather, developing a natural sweetness when roasted or sautéed. Organic Brussels sprouts are particularly delicious with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar or tossed with garlic and herbs. Kale and Other Leafy Greens: As the temperatures drop, organic kale, Swiss chard, and spinach flourish. These leafy greens are loaded with vitamins and antioxidants, perfect for salads, soups, and sautés. Pumpkins: Organic pumpkins aren’t just for carving; they’re for cooking, too! Their flesh is great for pies, breads, soups, and risottos, while their seeds can be roasted for a crunchy snack. MothersMarket.com | 9  Winter Organic Produce: Nourishing and Bright Winter brings a different but equally delicious selection of organic produce. Root vegetables, hardy greens, and citrus fruits dominate the season, providing a comforting and colorful array of flavors to enjoy. Potatoes: Hearty organic potatoes are a winter staple, perfect for mashing, roasting, or turning into warming soups and stews. Varieties like Yukon Gold, red potatoes, and fingerlings offer different textures and flavors to experiment with. Leeks and Onions: These alliums are essential for winter cooking, providing a robust base flavor for soups, stews, and roasts. Organic leeks and onions are fresher and free from harmful chemicals. Cabbage: Organic cabbage varieties, including red and green, are at their best during winter. Use them in slaws, stir-fries, or fermented into sauerkraut to enjoy their crunchy texture and health benefits. Root Vegetables: Winter is the perfect time to enjoy organic root vegetables like carrots, parsnips, beets, and turnips. Their natural sweetness intensifies when roasted, making them a delicious and nutrient-rich addition to winter meals. Citrus Fruits: Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes reach their peak during the winter months. Organic citrus fruits are free from wax coatings and synthetic chemicals, offering a pure, vibrant flavor. Enjoy them fresh, juiced, or in zest-filled desserts. 10| Organic Living Magazine  Winter Squash: Varieties like kabocha, spaghetti squash, and Hubbard squash offer sweet, nutty flavors that are perfect for baking, roasting, or making into creamy soupss Pomegranates: These jewel-like fruits add a pop of color and a burst of tart flavor to winter salads, yogurt, and desserts. Organic pomegranates are a rich source of antioxidants and vitamin C. Dark, Leafy Greens: Even in the coldest months, organic kale, collard greens, and mustard greens thrive. Their slightly bitter flavor is perfect for hearty soups, stews, or simply sautéed with garlic and olive oil.

Why Choose Organic?

Opting for organic produce not only supports sustainable farming practices that avoid harmful

pesticides and GMOs, but also ensures you’re consuming fruits and vegetables at their nutritional

peak. Organic farming methods often result in richer soil, which can lead to produce with higher

levels of vitamins and minerals.

To make the most of seasonal organic produce, try these tips:

  1. Plan meals around what’s in season: Incorporate seasonal vegetables and fruits into your weekly

meal planning.

  1. Preserve the bounty: Consider canning, freezing, or fermenting seasonal produce to enjoy its

flavors all year round.

By embracing seasonal organic produce, you’re not only enjoying food at its freshest and most

flavorful, but you’re also supporting sustainable farming and a healthier planet. So this fall and

winter, savor the season’s best offerings and create meals that are as good for the earth as they are

for you!

Herb-Roasted Diestel Organic Turkey Recipe

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 Diestel Organic Turkey (12-14 lbs)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh rosemary, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh thyme, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons fresh sage, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 large onion, quartered
  • 2 carrots, cut into large chunks
  • 2 celery stalks, cut into large chunks
  • 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth
  • Fresh herbs for garnish (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 325°F.
  2. Prepare the Turkey: Remove the turkey from its packaging and take out

the giblets and neck. Rinse the turkey inside and out under cold water, then

pat dry with paper towels.

  1. Make the Herb Butter: In a bowl, combine softened butter, minced garlic,

rosemary, thyme, sage, lemon zest, salt, and pepper until well mixed.

  1. Season the Turkey: Gently loosen the skin over the turkey breast using your

fingers. Rub half of the herb butter mixture directly onto the meat under the

skin, then rub the remaining butter all over the outside of the turkey. Season

the cavity generously with salt and pepper, and stuff it with the quartered

onion, carrots, and celery.

  1. Prepare for Roasting: Place the turkey breast-side up on a roasting rack in

a large roasting pan. Pour chicken broth into the bottom of the pan to keep

the turkey moist.

  1. Roast the Turkey: Cover the turkey loosely with aluminum foil. Roast in the

preheated oven for about 2 hours. Remove the foil and continue roasting for

an additional 1 to 1.5 hours, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F in

the thickest part of the thigh.

  1. Rest and Serve: Once cooked, remove the turkey from the oven and let it

rest for at least 20-30 minutes before carving. This resting period allows the

juices to redistribute, ensuring a moist and flavorful turkey.

8.Garnish and Enjoy: Garnish with fresh herbs if desired, and serve alongside

your favorite Thanksgiving sides.

The Lo Siento Difference

Lo Siento has rapidly established itself as a prominent name in the premium tequila market across the United States, capturing consumers’ attention in high-profile regions such as California, Michigan, Tennessee, and Georgia. The brand’s success can be attributed to its commitment to ultra-premium quality combined with an accessible price point, making it a compelling choice for the modern drinker and seasoned tequila enthusiasts. Commitment to Quality and Sustainability Lo Siento’s ethos is a dedication to producing high-quality tequila that respects the environment and traditional craftsmanship. The brand’s tequila portfolio is sustainably crafted in the Jalisco Highlands, a region renowned for its ideal growing conditions for blue agave. This area is characterized by rich volcanic soil, a unique climate, and the mountainous terrain that contribute to the exceptional flavors found in the agave plant. Lo Siento prides itself on its stringent production standards, ensuring every bottle is additives- free. This commitment to purity allows the natural flavors of the agave to shine through, resonating with consumers who appreciate a more authentic tequila experience. The brand’s offerings especially appeal to those who prefer a vegetal, agave-forward taste, setting it apart from many mainstream competitors relying on artificial flavors or sweeteners.

Lo Siento’s production process begins with a partnership with a single family-owned estate distillery in the Jalisco Highlands, ensuring quality and sustainability are at the forefront. The estate meticulously cultivates blue agave, overseeing every step from soil preparation to harvest. Each plant is nurtured for 6 to 10 years, allowing the agave to develop the rich, complex flavors that define Lo Siento’s tequilas. The estate’s farmers carefully manage sunlight, water, and care for optimal growth. After harvesting, the agave hearts, or piñas, are cooked in traditional brick ovens, a time-honored method enhancing their natural sweetness. The cooked piñas are then crushed to extract the juice, which undergoes fermentation with natural yeast, preserving the tequila’s authentic character. Following double distillation, the resulting spirit is smooth and flavorful, forming the foundation of Lo Siento’s product line, including Silver (Blanco), Reposado, and Añejo tequilas.  Lo Siento’s portfolio caters to diverse palates. The Silver tequila is unaged, offering bright, crisp flavors with fresh agave and citrus notes, perfect for sipping or cocktails. The Reposado, aged 11 months in Virginia White Oak Bourbon barrels, boasts a balanced profile of sweetness and spice, appealing to those who enjoy more complexity. The Añejo, aged 15 months in similar barrels, delivers robust and refined flavors. With prices starting below $45 for Silver and Reposado and $60 for Añejo, Lo Siento balances premium quality with accessibility.

In a crowded tequila market, Lo Siento distinguishes itself with its artisanal roots, sustainable practices, and commitment to authenticity. By highlighting its family-owned distillery and traditional production methods, the brand resonates with consumers seeking transparency and craftsmanship. Its marketing strategy emphasizes education and engagement, building a community of tequila enthusiasts through tastings, collaborations with mixologists, and industry events.  Lo Siento goes beyond the bottle, encouraging consumers to savor its tequilas neat or in cocktails, enhancing versatility. Committed to responsible drinking, the brand advocates quality over quantity, aligning with broader trends in the premium spirits industry. Looking forward, Lo Siento plans to expand its offerings with new expressions, larger package sizes, and limited-edition releases, ensuring its portfolio remains dynamic and appealing.

As the tequila industry grows, Lo Siento is positioned as a leader in the premium market, emphasizing quality, sustainability, and approachability. With its expansion into major markets like California, Georgia, Michigan, and Tennessee, and exclusive availability at Mother’s Market locations in Southern California, Lo Siento continues to solidify its reputation. Founder Ryan Tierney underscores this partnership, highlighting shared values in sustainability and a commitment to additive-free, conscience-friendly tequila. Through tradition, passion, and expertise, Lo Siento invites consumers to embrace life unapologetically with the world’s best tequila.

About the Brand

Lo Siento sustainably farms in the Jalisco Highlands and their products

are crafted through generations of tradition, passion and knowledge of

agave. Their 100% Blue Weber Agave is grown and distilled by their family

owned and operated distillery.

Hosting 101

10 Tips for Stress-Free Holiday Hosting

Hosting a holiday gathering can be both exciting and overwhelming, but with a bit of planning, you can pull off a memorable event that everyone—including you—will enjoy. Here are 10 tips to help make your holiday hosting stress-free and enjoyable

  1. PLAN AHEAD Create a detailed to-do list a week or two in advance. Include tasks like grocery shopping, cleaning, and prepping any dishes that can be made ahead of time. Staying organized will help reduce last-minute stress.
  2.  SKIP THE COOKING If you order your Thanksgiving feast in advance from Mother’s, you can save yourself a lot of time and stress. Mother’s will cook everything for you so all you have to do is reheat and serve.
  3. SET THE TABLE EARLY If possible, set the table the day before. This frees up time on the day of the event and gives you a chance to adjust anything without the pressure of time.
  4.  DELEGATE TASKS Don’t hesitate to ask guests to bring a dish or contribute in some way. Many guests are happy to help, and it lightens your load

.24 | Organic Living Magazine

  1. CREATE A COZY ATMOSPHERE Dim the lights, light candles, and play some soft background music to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. A cozy environment helps set the tone for a relaxed gathering.
  2.  ENJOY THE MOMENT Finally, remember to enjoy the celebration! Your guests are there to spend time with you, so don’t worry about everything being perfect. A relaxed and happy host always makes for a great party.
  3. KEEP THE DECOR SIMPLE Less is more when it comes to holiday decorations. Use natural elements like pine branches, fresh fruit, or candles to create a festive yet elegant tablescape without cluttering the space.
  4. PREP FOR DIETARY NEEDS Ask in advance if any guests have dietary restrictions or allergies. Having a few options for vegetarians, gluten-free guests, or those with allergies shows thoughtfulness and inclusivity.
  5. SET UP A SELF-SERVE DRINK STATION Create a designated area where guests can help themselves to drinks. This frees you up from constantly refilling glasses and encourages mingling.
  6. OFFER A SIGNATURE DRINK Welcome guests with a signature cocktail or festive punch. This makes a great first impression and keeps guests occupied as they arrive. Offer a non-alcoholic option, too!

Hearty and Healthy: The best organic squash recipes for fall comfort

As the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop, there’s nothing quite like the warmth of a comforting meal made with seasonal produce. Fall is the perfect time to embrace winter squash, a family of vegetables that brings both vibrant color and rich flavor to the table. Whether you prefer the creamy sweetness of butternut, the nutty flavor of acorn, the dense texture of kabocha, or the noodle-like strands of spaghetti squash, there’s a variety of squash for every palate and occasion. This article dives deep into the diverse world of winter squash, exploring its many culinary uses and highlighting a collection of delicious organic recipes that showcase its versatility. From hearty soups and roasted salads to satisfying casseroles, these recipes are designed to bring comfort and nutrition to your fall meals. We’ll also discuss the health benefits of organic squash and offer tips on how to incorporate it into both everyday meals and special celebrations.

Why Choose Organic Squash?

Organic winter squash is not only delicious but also nutritious. By opting for organic varieties, you’re choosing produce grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Organic farming practices often enhance the nutritional content of the soil, resulting in vegetables that are richer in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Winter squash is naturally high in beta-carotene (which converts to vitamin A in the body), vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. These nutrients support immune function, promote healthy skin and vision, and aid in maintaining a healthy digestive system. Plus, their rich, natural sweetness and satisfying texture make them ideal for creating wholesome, comforting dishes that are perfect for fall.

26 | Organic Living Magazine

Butternut Squash: The Creamy All-Rounder Butternut squash is one of the most versatile and popular winter squashes. Its smooth, orange flesh has a sweet, nutty flavor that lends itself well to both savory and sweet dishes. Recipe Idea: Creamy Butternut Squash Soup with Sage and Coconut Milk This luscious soup is a fall classic, perfect for warming up on a chilly day. Roast cubed organic butternut squash with olive oil, salt, and pepper until caramelized. Sauté onions, garlic, and fresh sage in a pot, then add the roasted squash, vegetable broth, and a can of coconut milk. Blend until smooth and velvety, and finish with a drizzle of olive oil and crispy sage leaves. Pro Tip: For a festive touch, serve the soup in small, hollowed- out squash bowls! Acorn Squash: The Nutty Delight Acorn squash, with its distinctive ribbed shape and sweet, slightly nutty flavor, is perfect for roasting or stuffing. Its compact size makes it ideal for individual servings. Recipe Idea: Maple-Roasted Acorn Squash with Quinoa and Cranberries Cut organic acorn squash in half, scoop out the seeds, and brush the flesh with a mixture of maple syrup, olive oil, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Roast until tender and caramelized. Meanwhile, prepare a quinoa salad with dried cranberries, chopped pecans, and a light citrus vinaigrette. Spoon the quinoa mixture into the roasted squash halves for a beautiful and nourishing dish that can be served as a main course or a side. Pro Tip: Save the seeds and roast them with a little sea salt for a healthy snack! Kabocha Squash: The Dense, Sweet Treat Kabocha squash, also known as Japanese pumpkin, has a sweet, chestnut-like flavor and a dense, creamy texture. It’s a great choice for hearty dishes and can easily be substituted for pumpkin or sweet potato in most recipes. Recipe Idea: Kabocha Squash Casserole with Spinach and Feta Peel and cube an organic kabocha squash, then toss with olive oil, garlic, and chopped fresh herbs like rosemary and thyme. Layer the squash cubes in a baking dish with sautéed spinach, crumbled feta cheese, and a sprinkle of nutmeg. Top with breadcrumbs mixed with a little olive oil for crunch. Bake until the squash is tender and the top is golden and bubbly. Pro Tip: Kabocha skin is edible and becomes tender when cooked, so feel free to leave it on for added fiber and nutrients.

MothersMarket.com |27

Spaghetti Squash: The Low-Carb Pasta Alternative Spaghetti squash is known for its unique flesh that, when cooked, pulls apart into spaghetti-like strands. It’s a popular choice for those seeking a low-carb alternative to pasta. Recipe Idea: Spaghetti Squash with Roasted Tomato and Basil Pesto Cut an organic spaghetti squash in half, scoop out the seeds, and roast until the flesh is tender and easily pulled into strands with a fork. Toss the squash “noodles” with a homemade basil pesto (or your favorite store-bought organic version), roasted cherry tomatoes, and freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Finish with a sprinkle of toasted pine nuts for added texture. Pro Tip: Roast the squash cut side down to ensure even cooking and to prevent it from becoming too watery.

Incorporating Squash into Everyday Meals Winter squash can be seamlessly integrated into your daily meals in various ways: As a Pasta or Rice Substitute: Use spaghetti squash or cubed squash in place of traditional pasta or rice in your favorite dishes for a lower-carb, nutrient-rich option. In Breakfast Dishes: Incorporate squash into breakfast by adding roasted cubes to omelets, frittatas, or even oatmeal for a savory twist. In Salads: Add roasted squash to salads for a pop of color and a sweet, earthy flavor. Combine with greens, nuts, dried fruits, and a tangy vinaigrette. Roasted as a Side Dish: Simply toss squash cubes with olive oil, salt, pepper, and your favorite herbs or spices, then roast until tender and caramelized.

28 | Organic Living Magazine

Squash for Festive Occasions Winter squash also makes a stunning centerpiece for holiday meals. Consider serving stuffed acorn squash or a roasted butternut squash dish with seasonal herbs and spices to impress your guests. Not only are these dishes visually appealing, but they also offer a comforting, cozy flavor that embodies the essence of fall. This fall, embrace the season by celebrating the unique flavors and textures of organic winter squash. Whether you’re preparing a cozy weeknight dinner or a festive holiday meal, these versatile vegetables can add color, nutrition, and warmth to your table. By choosing organic squash, you’re not only supporting sustainable farming practices but also ensuring the healthiest, most flavorful produce for your family. So, grab a few different varieties of squash at your local Mother’s and start experimenting with these hearty, healthy recipes. Your taste buds—and your body—will thank you!

A fresh and Festive Touch: Setting the perfect thanksgiving tablescape

Thanksgiving is not only a time to gather around the table for a delicious meal but also an opportunity to create a warm, inviting ambiance for your guests. A beautifully set tablescape can set the mood for the feast, and one of the best ways to elevate your table is by incorporating fresh, seasonal produce as natural décor. START WITH SEASONAL COLORS Choose a color palette inspired by the rich hues of fall—think warm oranges, deep reds, golden yellows, and earthy greens. Use linens, napkins, and plates in neutral tones to let the natural beauty of the produce stand out. FRESH PRODUCE AS CENTERPIECES Instead of traditional flower arrangements, use fresh fruits and vegetables to create a stunning centerpiece. Place a variety of gourds, pumpkins, and squash down the center of your table for a rustic, farm-to-table feel. Add clusters of apples, pears, and pomegranates for pops of color and texture. For an extra touch of elegance, tuck in a few sprigs of rosemary or thyme, which also give off a lovely aroma.

32| Organic living magazine

PERSONAL TOUCHES WITH PRODUCE Create individual place settings by placing a small, seasonal fruit, like a pear or an apple, on each plate. Attach name tags to the stems for a simple and personalized touch. You can also scatter walnuts, acorns, or cranberries around the table for added texture and warmth. CANDLELIGHT AND GREENERY Complement your produce décor with candles in varying heights to create a soft, cozy glow. Add sprigs of greenery, such as eucalyptus or pine branches, to fill in spaces between the produce, creating a lush and abundant FINAL THOUGHT Using fresh produce to decorate your Thanksgiving table not only highlights the beauty of the season but also adds an organic, sustainable touch. It’s a simple and elegant way to make your gathering feel even more special and festive!

Sweet and Savory Pairings: How to cook with Pomegranate and Pears this fall

As fall settles in, the markets fill with some of the season’s most vibrant fruits: pomegranates and pears. These two fall favorites offer a delightful contrast—pears bring a mellow sweetness, while pomegranates deliver a bright, tart burst. Their unique flavors and textures can elevate a wide range of dishes, from fresh salads and warming desserts to rich, savory mains. In this article, we’ll explore the versatility of pomegranates and pears, featuring recipes that highlight their delicious potential in both sweet and savory pairings. Plus, we’ll provide tips on selecting and preparing these fruits to ensure you’re enjoying them at their peak of freshness. Selecting the Best Pomegranates and Pears To get the most flavor and nutrition out of your pomegranates and pears, it’s important to know what to look for: Pomegranates: Choose pomegranates that feel heavy for their size, which indicates they’re full of juice. The skin should be firm and have a vibrant, deep red color. Avoid any with soft spots or cracks. Pears: Pears are unique because they ripen off the tree. Select pears that are firm but not rock-hard; they should yield slightly when pressed near the stem. Bosc, Anjou, and Bartlett are all excellent varieties for cooking. Allow pears to ripen at room temperature, then refrigerate them once they’re ripe to extend their freshness.

Recipe Idea: Pear and Pomegranate

Autumn Salad This salad is a celebration of fall’s bounty, combining the juicy sweetness of pears with the tart crunch of pomegranate seeds. Start with a bed of mixed greens or arugula, then add thinly sliced pears, pomegranate arils, crumbled goat cheese, and toasted walnuts. Drizzle with a light vinaigrette made from olive oil, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard, and a touch of honey. Pairing Tip: Pears and pomegranates pair well with cheeses like goat cheese, feta, or blue cheese, which add a creamy, tangy contrast. Nuts like walnuts, pecans, or almonds provide a satisfying crunch. Recipe Idea: Poached Pears with Spiced Honey and Pomegranate Reduction For a show-stopping dessert, poach pears in a mixture of red wine, honey, cinnamon, star anise, and a splash of orange juice. Simmer until the pears are tender and infused with the spiced syrup. Meanwhile, make a pomegranate reduction by simmering pomegranate juice with sugar and a squeeze of lemon until thick and syrupy. Serve the poached pears drizzled with the pomegranate reduction and a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Pairing Tip: Poached pears work beautifully with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove. The pomegranate reduction adds a tangy contrast that cuts through the sweetness, making this dessert balanced and sophisticated. Recipe Idea: Pomegranate-Glazed Chicken with Roasted Pears Pomegranates add a tangy-sweet note that can elevate savory dishes like roasted chicken. Marinate chicken thighs or breasts in a mixture of pomegranate molasses, olive oil, garlic, and fresh rosemary. Roast until the chicken is caramelized and cooked through. Serve with roasted pears tossed in olive oil, thyme, and a touch of honey, alongside a bed of fluffy couscous or wild rice. Pairing Tip: Pomegranate pairs well with savory herbs like rosemary, thyme, and sage. For a richer flavor, marinate the chicken for several hours or overnight. Roasted pears add a sweet contrast that complements the tartness of the pomegranate glaze. More ways to use Pomegranates and Pears In Beverages: Use pomegranate juice or arils in cocktails, mocktails, or mulled wine. Pear puree adds a sweet note to sangria or a fall smoothie. As a Garnish: Sprinkle pomegranate seeds over roasted vegetables or grain bowls for a burst of color and flavor. Use thin pear slices to top oatmeal or yogurt. In Baked Goods: Add diced pears to muffins, quick breads, or cakes for moisture and sweetness. Pomegranate arils can be incorporated into scones or used to decorate cakes.

Tips for preparing and storing pomegranates and pears Seeding Pomegranates: To easily remove pomegranate seeds, cut the fruit in half and gently tap the back with a wooden spoon over a bowl. The seeds will fall out with minimal mess. Peeling Pears: For poaching or baking, use a vegetable peeler to remove the skin of pears. If using pears in a salad, keep the skin on for added texture and nutrients. Storing: Store whole pomegranates at room temperature for up to a week or refrigerate for longer storage. Pomegranate seeds can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to five days. Keep pears at room temperature to ripen, then refrigerate once ripe to extend their shelf life. This fall, embrace the versatility of pomegranates and pears to create dishes that delight the senses and bring comfort and joy to your table. Whether you’re crafting a light salad, a rich dessert, or a savory entrée, these fruits offer endless possibilities for bright and balanced flavors. So grab a few pears and pomegranates at your local market, and start experimenting with these sweet and savory pairings that capture the essence of the season!

Warm Up with Winter Citrus: Bright and Zesty Recipes for Cold Days

When the days get shorter and the chill sets in, it’s easy to crave comfort foods that bring warmth and coziness. But winter also brings a burst of bright, tangy flavors that can liven up any dish: citrus fruits! Oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes are at their peak during the winter months, offering a refreshing and zesty contrast to hearty seasonal meals. Rich in vitamins, especially vitamin C, citrus fruits are perfect for boosting your immune system and brightening up the cold, dark days.

That’s why we are sharing creative ways to incorporate organic citrus into your winter menu, from savory dishes and salads to delightful desserts and comforting drinks. Plus, we’ll share tips on how to select, store, and maximize the flavor of these juicy gems.

Why Organic Citrus?

Organic citrus fruits are grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers, making them a healthier choice for you and the environment. Organic farming practices also often result in richer, more flavorful fruit, since they rely on healthy soil and natural methods of pest control. And because citrus peels are often used in cooking, choosing organic reduces your exposure to chemical residues that can linger on the skin.

Orange: The Versatile Sweet Star

Oranges are the quintessential winter citrus, loved for their sweet, juicy flesh and vibrant color. They are incredibly versatile, adding brightness to both sweet and savory dishes.

Recipe Idea: Orange and Fennel Salad with Mint and Olives
This salad is a delightful mix of sweet, salty, and aromatic flavors. Thinly slice fresh organic oranges and layer them with shaved fennel, Kalamata olives, and fresh mint leaves. Drizzle with a dressing made from olive oil, lemon juice, honey, and a pinch of sea salt. The juicy sweetness of the oranges pairs beautifully with the crisp fennel and salty olives, while the mint adds a refreshing finish.

Pro Tip: Use a sharp knife to slice the oranges into rounds, removing the peel and pith for a clean, elegant presentation.

52 | Organic Living Magazine

Recipe Idea: Honey-Glazed Orange Chicken
Marinate chicken thighs in a mixture of orange juice, zest, honey, garlic, and a splash of soy sauce. Roast until the chicken is golden and caramelized, basting occasionally with the marinade for extra flavor. Serve with steamed rice and roasted vegetables for a comforting, citrus-infused meal.

Pro Tip: Use both the juice and the zest of the orange to maximize the flavor, as the zest contains fragrant essential oils that add a deeper citrus note.

Grapefruit: The Tart and Tangy Beauty

Grapefruit’s bold, tangy flavor can add a surprising twist to many dishes. Rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, this fruit is perfect for salads, marinades, and even cocktails.

Recipe Idea: Grapefruit and Avocado Salad with Honey-Lime Dressing
Combine segments of juicy organic grapefruit with ripe avocado slices, thinly sliced red onion, and fresh arugula or mixed greens. Toss with a honey-lime dressing made with olive oil, fresh lime juice, a touch of honey, and a pinch of chili flakes for a little heat. The tartness of the grapefruit complements the creamy avocado, while the lime adds a refreshing zing.

Pro Tip: When cutting grapefruit segments, use a paring knife to cut between the membranes for clean, pith-free sections.

Recipe Idea: Grapefruit Curd Tart
Make a silky grapefruit curd by whisking organic grapefruit juice, zest, eggs, sugar, and butter over low heat until thickened. Pour the curd into a pre-baked tart shell and chill until set. The result is a tangy, creamy dessert with a beautiful pink hue that’s perfect for winter gatherings.

Pro Tip: For a more intense flavor, combine grapefruit juice with a splash of lemon juice to balance the sweetness with a bit of extra tartness.

53 | MothersMarket.com

Lemon: The Bright and Zesty Essential

Lemons are a kitchen staple year-round, but their peak season is winter. They bring a bright, acidic punch that enhances both savory and sweet dishes.

Recipe Idea: Lemon-Ricotta Pancakes with Blueberry Compote
Brighten up your winter mornings with these fluffy, tangy pancakes. Mix organic ricotta cheese, lemon zest, and lemon juice into your pancake batter for a light, airy texture. Top with a warm blueberry compote made by simmering blueberries, a little sugar, and lemon juice until thick and syrupy. Serve with a dollop of Greek yogurt and a drizzle of honey.

Pro Tip: To get the most juice from your lemons, roll them on the counter under the palm of your hand before cutting and squeezing.

Recipe Idea: Lemon-Garlic Shrimp Pasta
Sauté shrimp in olive oil with minced garlic, then deglaze the pan with fresh lemon juice and white wine. Toss with cooked pasta, lemon zest, chopped parsley, and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes for a quick and flavorful weeknight dinner that brings a taste of summer to winter.

Pro Tip: Always add lemon juice at the end of cooking to preserve its bright, fresh flavor.

Lime: The Bold and Aromatic Accent

Limes, with their aromatic, tart juice, add a sharp, tangy note to dishes. They’re ideal for marinades, dressings, desserts, and drinks.

Recipe Idea: Cilantro-Lime Grilled Fish Tacos
Marinate white fish fillets in a mixture of lime juice, zest, minced garlic, chopped cilantro, and a touch of olive oil. Grill until flaky and serve in warm tortillas with a tangy slaw made of shredded cabbage, lime juice, and a dollop of avocado crema. This dish is a bright and healthy take on comfort food, perfect for a light winter dinner.

Pro Tip: Zest your limes before juicing them, and freeze any extra zest for future use in recipes.

54 | Organic Living Magazine

Recipe Idea: Key Lime Pie with Graham Cracker Crust
Celebrate winter with a classic key lime pie. Whisk together condensed milk, organic key lime juice, and egg yolks, and pour into a graham cracker crust. Bake until set, then chill and top with whipped cream. This dessert is a refreshing way to end a meal, balancing sweet and tart flavors.

Pro Tip: Use freshly squeezed lime juice for the best flavor; bottled juice won’t have the same aromatic quality.

Tips for Selecting, Storing, and Maximizing Citrus Flavor

  1. Selecting Citrus: Look for firm, heavy fruits with bright, unblemished skin. The heavier the fruit, the juicier it will be. Organic citrus should have a natural, fragrant aroma and may have slight imperfections, which are normal and indicate they are free from synthetic waxes.
  2. Storing Citrus: Store citrus fruits at room temperature if you plan to eat them within a few days. For longer storage, keep them in the refrigerator’s crisper drawer, where they can stay fresh for up to two weeks.
  3. Maximizing Flavor: To get the most juice from your citrus, bring them to room temperature and roll them on the counter before juicing. For added flavor, use both the juice and the zest. Zest can be added to batters, marinades, dressings, and desserts to intensify the citrus aroma.

Citrus Drinks to Warm Up With

Don’t forget to enjoy citrus in your winter beverages! Try a hot honey-lemon tea to soothe a sore throat or a spiced grapefruit punch for a festive twist. A classic hot toddy made with lemon, honey, and whiskey is perfect for chilly evenings by the fire.

This winter, let the zesty, bright flavors of citrus fruits add a burst of sunshine to your meals. From salads and marinades to desserts and drinks, these versatile fruits bring a fresh, tangy twist to any dish. By choosing organic citrus, you ensure you’re getting the purest flavor and the most nutritional benefits. So stock up on these juicy gems, experiment with these recipes, and enjoy the vibrant taste of winter citrus all season long!

Tired of the same old holiday parties? This year, break away from tradition and infuse your celebrations with creativity and fun. By thinking outside the box, you can host a holiday event that’s fresh, festive, and unforgettable. Here are three creative party themes that will inspire your guests and add a twist to your holiday traditions.

Holiday Dessert Bar

Who doesn’t love dessert? Instead of a traditional dinner party, treat your guests to a holiday dessert bar filled with festive sweets. Ask each guest to bring their favorite holiday treat—whether it’s gingerbread cookies, peppermint bark, or spiced eggnog cupcakes. Set up a beautifully decorated table with assorted pastries, cakes, and candies, complete with hot chocolate, coffee, and spiced cider. You can even include a DIY cookie decorating station for an interactive element. This sweet twist will satisfy everyone’s sweet tooth and create a cozy, indulgent atmosphere.

Ornament-Decorating Party

Get crafty with a hands-on ornament-decorating party! Gather supplies like clear glass ornaments, paint pens, glitter, ribbons, and miniature holiday figurines. Guests can design their own ornaments while sipping on festive drinks and munching on snacks. It’s a fun and creative way to get into the holiday spirit, and guests leave with a personalized keepsake for their tree. This theme works especially well for families or groups of friends who enjoy DIY projects.

International Holiday Potluck

Take your holiday celebration global with an international holiday potluck. Invite your guests to bring a dish that represents a holiday tradition from a different culture. Think Swedish meatballs, Italian panettone, Mexican tamales, or Middle Eastern baklava. Not only will you have a delicious variety of foods, but you’ll also learn about different customs and stories that bring each dish to life. Add some multicultural décor and music to complete the experience, making your party a celebration of diverse holiday traditions from around the world.

Final Thought

Whether you opt for a dessert bar, a craft party, or a global feast, these creative themes will make your holiday gathering stand out. This season, reimagine your holiday traditions, and host a party that’s as unique as it is festive!
