National Organic Harvest Month

September is National Organic Harvest Month! As a company that is focused on providing the best organic produce, goods, and meals, we celebrate organic produce year round. However, we are championing organic foods even more this month! National Organic Harvest Month originated from organic farmers and natural food communities wanting to better educate the community about the benefits of organic foods and the farming process behind them, both for consumers and the earth!

What Does It Mean to Be Organic?

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, “USDA certified organic foods are grown and processed according to federal guidelines addressing, among many factors, soil quality, animal raising practices, pest and weed control, and use of additives” and “organic producers rely on natural substances and physical, mechanical, or biologically based farming methods to the fullest extent possible.” More specifically, produce can be certified as organic if its “grown on soil that had no prohibited substances applied for three years prior to harvest.” Such prohibited substances include most pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. As for processed foods, to qualify as being organic, they must not contain “artificial preservatives, colors, or flavors” and must “contain ingredients [that] are organic, with some minor exceptions.”

Why Eat Organic?

By eating organic food, you’re ensuring that you’re not putting chemicals, pesticides, growth stimulants, and antibiotics into your body. This means that such foods are safe and clean to eat. In addition, aside from being good for you, organic farming is good for the environment. By not spraying chemicals and pesticides, these harmful substances do not affect the air, water, or wildlife in the the surrounding area, which means less short and long-term effects on the environment.
